How about that another NG. Just about to finish up my garage, they painted today and hopefully I'll get some masons out next week to finish the brick front and the exterior will be done. It's 24' x 26' with 12 ' ceilings and and full upstairs. I am very pleased to have found the site and cannot believe there are as many people out there that like garages as much as me.

I own an overhead door business and would be glad to help out anyone with questions regarding them. I am going to try and post up some in progress pics today and some more recent ones tomorrow.

great looking shop!!!! what do you plan on doing with the upper floor?

I wish I could have gone that high, but the town has a height restriction on outbuildings.....

great looking garage, you might consider doing a "eye brow" overhang over the doors, my framer talked me into it, and it looks great, and keeps the rain from entering the garage with the door open.

Why not just do a 4' overhang in front of door? Here's a photo of my garage that I've been working on since 1994 - did/doing everything myself: 54'x48' w/full 2nd floor:

Lots done since these photos taken; heck, lots done since last web site update (am installing drop ceiling grid right now).

Welcome from another NC resident. Guess I'll need to take pictures of my garage. Pretty unique since I live in a dome house.

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Here are some recent pictures, as you can see we have added a water table across the front. It has shingles now, only thing left on the exterior is the brick. And the grading, fence repair, and driveway, it never ends.

Don't have really big plans for the upstairs just finishing it maybe next year and turning it into a gameroom/ football room. I was hoping to have it ready in time for this season but it will need to wait until next year.

I've been searching through the posts on what to do the floor with and now I'm more confused than ever. I probably do the grey paint thing with the paint chips like one of my neighbors did. I'm not looking to break the bank on a floor and this seems to be a good way of doing it.

What exactly is VCT? Is it a vinyl tile? How does it hold up to welding and jack stands. Looks real good, does it come in differnt colors other than black and white? Thanks,

Exterior is complete!

Well except for the landscaping and the gate. I am very pleased with the outcome, now to start on the inside. It will be a slow process as funds allow but hopefully it will be insulated and at the least heated by this time next year. I threw in a pic of my workbench I made from the leftover wood. We're wiring it up this weekend and will hopefully get the final next week.

Not really, I don't have much planned for downstairs anytime soon. I did get the CO about a month ago, the downstairs is just about wired up. Moved the workbench to the other wall and installed the door opener on the front door. It's the coolest opener I've seen though. I have mentioned it a few times here and I'll get some pics soon. It mounts like a jackshaft but is much smaller and more safe.

I'm hoping to start finishing the upstairs soon and would like to be finished for football season, we'll see. I'm getting the Nova towed home from my office Wednesday to get busy on it. Thanks for asking.

Cool, can't wait for details on the opener, is it the LiftMaster residential jack-shaft? I heard they were coming out with one soon.

Thank you.

Here are some pics of the operator and another update. My car and its new motor over in the corner. Glad it's home and ready to get busy on it. I have a short not so good quality video of the opener in action but have no idea how to put it up on here.

Send me the video and I'll host it.

That opener looks like it's made from an oil filter, an A/C compressor, a belt and a couple of pulleys from a car. Kidding of course, but that's what it looks like at first glance. How much do these things run?

Here's a poor pic of the controller it is probably 8" x 8" and 4" deep. The black cable is the release cord in case the power is out. These things cost around 500 plus shipping w/o remotes. Remotes would add 40 for the receiver interafce card, 40 for the receiver, and 25 per remote. I'm hoping to have them up for sale on the internet in a month or so or if someone is interested sooner they can PM me. The website will have a full length 10 minute movie of how it works and what not. Thanks for putting up the video.

Im happy to see the motor working. I just got 4 of them and was saying there is no way its going to move the door. The motor part hardly weighs anything and the motor its self is only 48volts. It looks exactly like a car power window motor and gear reduction. Ill be pushing them on everyone who wants a good motor if I find them up to the task. They shouldnt take any time to install.
They are made in England so they must be good :)

Thanks Rich your car is serious motivation for me!

Bahamas,

I'm pushing them on everyone as well. I just put one on a 12 x 12 insulated commercial door and it lifted it without effort. You can mount them in about 10 minutes and the wiring takes about 30 when it's all said and done but I think they are great. I also installed one on a 9 x 7 with double low headroom worked without issues.

Another thing I was thinking about...

Because its belt driven, can an intruder open the door from the outside? With a chain driven unit there is no way the sprocket will slip, but with a belt it might slip if the pulley is forced to turn.

Nah it's too tight. I thought about that as well if it was going to slip by trying to force it open it would slip as it was going up and down. Does that make sense?

I would think the force used to open a closed door by hand is much greater than the force required for the opener to open/close the door. I can pull up with all my weight.

I noticed on their website they had optional locks which locking into the track, which made me wonder how secure it was stock.

I just tried to lift my door and it wouldn't budge. My door also has the carriage house handles on the outside so it's easy to get leverage. That's not to say they are all that way. It definitely doesn't have a brake mechanism like a jackshaft so a lock would be a good idea if your concerned. The auto lock is about 150 bucks additional, kinda steep.

Well I installed a couple of them last week and they are pretty damn cool. They were on jeldwen 9x9 doors with high lift kits going 14' up the wall. They are quiet and smooth. Im a big guy and couldnt lift the door with the motor hooked up. I even hung on it to see if it would slip and it was fine. The motor will slow the door down a couple of feet before the end of its travel so it closes really nicely. I do alot of gate motors and this is setup the same as alot of the Italian made motors with the slowing down before the end of travel. In short Im impressed and will be trying to get everyone I nkow to buy em :)

So how do normal jackshaft (ie LiftMaster) openers close at the end of travel?

They come down at the same rate of speed up and down and just stop kind of abruptly like a normal garage door opener. These know where the limits are and begin slowing down 12 or so inches from the top and bottom. Just makes it nice and easy/ smooth when it stops.

Hey nice garage Nova65! I've been researching the Amarr steel carraige doors similiar to yours and I'm needing a 18x10. I was told that Amarr didn't make the Carriage style doors in that height. Do you know if thats true? What size doors do you have? Thank You!!!

That's not true, you can get them in 10' tall. It takes 2- 32" sections and 2- 28" sections. Normally on a 7 or 8' door they have 3 sections, in my case 3- 32" sections because mine is 16' x '8'. Now depending on where you live they probably can't windload a 10' tall Classica because it hasn't been tested.

Thanks for the information. I'm going to check into them! I live in south Louisiana, so they might be a little gun shy about selling those doors to us with all the Hurricane mess.

They are made by garage storage cabinets check the link in my sig. I have been pretty pleased with their products and service. They are made of 3/4" M2 furniture grade particle board and the doors are 5/8" MDF. We install there stuff and like anything else are very good for what you pay. I still need to get some handles, I've been looking for some novelty type that have maybe wrenches or small pistons, etc. If anyone knows of some like this let me know. Thanks,

Jimmy

Figured I would post some pics of the upstairs it is about 99%. I need to finish the storage doors, baseboards, and set the fixtures in the bathroom and it will be complete. I got a deal on some wood you may have seen in this post awhile back.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5099

I didn't realize when I bought it that some was clear cedar and some was tight knot, I had no experience with this type of stuff prior to starting the project. That is why it is mixed together. At any rate I think it turned out pretty cool and has much more character than if I would of sheetrocked. The big screen came free from a younger brother in law that moved back in with his parents and had nowhere to put it. I said he could have it back once he moved out again, yeah right!:bounce:

nova65ss - what size is your room upstairs? Looks great and I would like to so something similar. Do you plan on putting up doors where you have storage in the wall?

It's about 15 x 22 the garage is 24 x 26. I am planning on getting some cheap luan doors like the others and cutting them in half and picture framing them with trim boards. The plan is to have them sit in the hole and just pull off when I need to get to them. Just haven't figured out how to keep them in place yet.
