Hey there! Just wanted to get a post up introducing myself. I'm currently in the Ann Arbor, MI region (Go Blue!) and have used this site a few times in the past to figure things out, get an idea how to do something, and of course drool over your garages.

I've got a typical suburban home, with a garage in the lower corner of the house and living space above it. So I have to be careful with my hobbies of breaking stuff and trying to repair other's idiocy.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone else has done, and hoping to steal (borrow?) other's ideas for my garage!

CD: do you have any old tools to post a few pictures of or any questions? here's a 50 year old Craftsman block grinder you might like. One of our members painted this while his son was attending Michigan. it's one of my favorites because if you haven't read the thread yet the Craftsman block grinder is a machine built to last 100 years with a little care.

welcome and feel free to ask questions or tell us your goals so we might help you find a few good threads you might not have found.

Unfortunately, I haven't come across any good, old stuff. Still working on building my basic collection to support my habits.

Current goals? After the engine swap I'm doing, get a MaxJax or Bendix scissor lift (http://www.bendpak.com/Shop-Equipment/QuickJack/BL-5000.aspx) to make working on cars a tad easier. Currently working to build a fun track car, and taking the lift to the track weekends would be immensely nice, but so would the added height of the MaxJax.

Being in Michigan, one day I'd also like to put up a Natural Gas heater and maybe retire the propane bottle heater instead. Aside from that, I need to build a shed to gain more room in the garage...

CD: you might have issues trying to put a lift in your garage if you have bedrooms above it, but the Max Jax can be rolled out into your driveway if you have a level area. good luck and did you like the Michigan grinder since the owner's name for it is Go Blue?

The ceiling is 96", so I know the MaxJax will fit in there but I have to verify my cars can go up that far. If not, then I'll either have a lift that can't be fully extended, or I'll go with that Bendpak scissor lift. Driveway is out of the question since I've got a car I want to put on the lift for a month+ while I upgrade everything on it (suspension, fuel, exhaust, brake lines) and my HOA probably would write me a "we hate to send this letter, but..." bill.

Unsure what you mean by the Michigan Grinder? I've had grinders before, and I do believe they're tasty. Pasties from the UP are awesome as well, and that's a bona fide Michigan Yuper thing!

CD: i guess you didn't see the U of M paint job on top of that old Craftsman block grinder. it's not the best picture. good luck with the lift and i was a Realtor for 30 years in a past life so understand and never want a part of a HOA.

cheers

Whoops, I guess responding on an empty stomach, and thinking about grinders for lunch (ended up getting one for dinner instead) makes one lack a bit of intelligence!

That Craftsman grinder is awesome! I love the paint job on it, and how it looks. The fact it's got a story behind it makes it 10x cooler, in my humble opinion anyways.

My HOA is pretty reasonable, actually. Seems like they only care when the county would say something anyways. I've gotten 1 letter, because I had a car in my driveway that had expired plates on it for a month because I was working on another car in my garage and needed room around it. No fee or anything, just a warning that it needed to be moved.
