I definitely wish the local stores carried this one...

Not only do I get hit with an additional $100 freight and still have to pay tax, but the 20% coupons don't work with online orders. Plus, the price went up to $1,999.

At $1280 plus tax, great deal! At $2100 plus tax, a bit less thrilling.

It goes on sale once in a while for approximately $1500.

I picked this toolbox up a couple of weeks ago. Massive - has to weigh near 1000 lbs. Great fun loading it onto my car trailer! Long story short - I don't know why I waited so long to purchase this thing. It has saved me so much time by allowing me to organize my tools in one place and lay them out in a sane fashion. I picked it up on a managers special with a 20% off coupon so it was around 1290.00 plus tax. Such a deal especially since I could pick up locally and save shipping. Northern tools shipping was almost 1000.00 for the same box!

When I got it home I found that the top drawer only opened about 2/3 of the distance of the other drawers. I called the local HF and they checked their floor unit. The floor unit opened to about the same distance as the other drawers. I tried forever to figure out how to remove the top drawer which is different from the others in terms of how to remove it. Finally called the HF store back and asked for help. Manager kindly offered to exchange the unit but before I had to load the car trailer back up suggested that I try and force the drawer by banging it into the stops (!!). After assuring me that I would not void any warranty by such actions I gave it a try. After about 3 or 4 good slams against the stops lo and behold the drawer slid open to full width.

I'm now waiting for a top unit to appear at HF. Having been spoiled by so much space I cannot stop now though having the flat surface is sure nice as a work area.

I wasn't aware that a top box was available for the 72" unit.

Sorry. I didn't mean to imply that the top box was available from HF. I wish it were. I'd have one on order if it was.

No problem, I was just making sure I hadn't missed something. HF not having a top box available is the only thing that's stopping me from purchasing the 72" box.

get the bottom now. 2 reasons....

a> you can always place a smaller box on top
b> the price is not going to go down in the future.....

Add shipping and it ends up at around 2200 for me.

I just ordered one last night over the phone. I've been in the market for a giant toolbox for a couple of years, but just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. The 20 drawers vs. 16 or 17 for the other Chinese boxes, plus HF's sale price sealed the deal for me.

Shipping wound up being $103, not the $89 shown on the web site. There will be a lift gate charge when the truck shows up, but if my past experience holds true it'll be about $50-$75.

As mentioned earlier in this thread and elsewhere, if you order over the phone you can use one of the 20% coupons that says "Valid in retail stores only." The HF rep didn't give me any hassle AT ALL about the coupon. Extremely nice guy - great customer service.

NOTE: HF is now charging sale tax on phone orders. I'm guessing that they collect it if they have a store in your state.

So... total price, including shipping & tax was $1467.13. Plus an unknown but probably not hateful lift gate surcharge.

Now that my workbench and borrowed toolbox are going away to make room for this monster, any ideas how I can mount a big vise without drilling holes in the top? I plan on making a heavy wood top for it, but I don't know if mounting the vise to the top will be sturdy enough or keep it from lifting. Any thoughts?

+1. A good review with lots of photos, please !:bounce:

Lots of pics, check.
Comprehensive review, check.

Due to the fact that it's back-ordered, I estimate delivery date before mid-August. Y'all will have to wait 'till then, but I promise to do my best.

If there's anything specific someone wants to know, I'll report on it. Just post a request and I'll try to mention it in the review. The OP of this thread seemed to do a pretty good job, however.

(I forgot to mention in my earlier post that it was back-ordered for 7-14 days. I just didn't want to wait and have the sale price expire)

I'm still interested in any ideas about a way to make a top and mount a big vise without buggering up the toolbox...

Those coupons are only good for retail store purchases, and this box is generally an internet only item (i.e. most stores do not stock it).

Anyone know if you can order one at your local store and use this coupon?
If any stores can stock these, then I would imaging you may be able to order them.

I once ordered an automotive scissor lift in store and used a 20% off coupon. They definitely did not stock it.

Bring the part number in and just ask them to special order "just a tool box" and see what happens.

My closest store stocks them. And I know you can go to the local store to order and save shipping costs. At least that's what they told me when I was asking about a different large item I was interested in purchasing.

Here is the link to the Sears "Wolf" toolbox (the exact same toolbox as HF and Northern Tool) made by the same factory in China. Sears is selling the same toolbox for around $4000.00. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00981345000P?keyword=wolf+72&prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1[/URL]

It looks like black paint costs an additional $2,000,and you've gotta buy it from Sears...

looks like a sick deal!! Im a master tech,, so I beat the **** out of my box.. I have a great matco 6s 50 inch box not,, really nice! but way to small for me now,, I have that full and a 4 drawer cart,, they are stuffed so bad its getting hard to find stuff..

I would like to see one at a store just to give it a try,, Im prob gonna get the montezuma elite with the top hutch soon.. looks to be a great box for what I can afford.. But I want to get my hands on one of these first.. Im gonna call local stores tomorrow to see if I can find one,, I will let you know what I think if I can find one.. but for a inexpensive box... $1500 for a 72-60-44 inch box,, is one hell of a deal!!!

Trying to understand this comment. :)

So good master techs destroy tool boxes, and crappy techs have clean boxes?

I guess what you mean is it gets lots of use..

47147947 and the year long coupon code both got bounced as invalid when I tried to put the discount in the cart... am I doing something wrong? A nice six foot box (or two... or three) would look great along the west wall of my garage.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, you have to order it over the phone, coupon doesn't work online. I called them up last week to confirm the coupon could be used with the box, and they said it could.

I am pretty sure the southern, Dayton, Ohio store has both the bottom and the top in store, still.

I haven't been down there in a few months but I have been trying to figure out how to get it home. My 12 drawer 26" Craftsman just isn't cutting it. :lol_hitti
