Happened to make a quick run to Lowe's yesterday and noticed they had a box I had never seen before. Its taller than the normal Kobalt Boxes and from my 2mins of handling it, seems decently built.

Comes with a work surface but I didn't see a matching top box.

Looks like the Waterloo boxes they make for Craftsman just under the pro series.

Seems to have 200 lb drawers and a 300lb top drawer? Isn’t that more than the other boxes they have?

I have to go back later today and will take a closer look. I didn't see the USA tag on it the first time. I assume it's just made here with global materials.

Ive seen it. I wasnt impressed. Not real convinced they would hold up to the load rating.

A couple of Lowes toolbox related items:

Anybody see this eyesore?

They are trying to be innovative, can't blame them for that. The problems are lots of wasted space, especially for the money, tool holders (socket, power tool) that while interesting don't accommodate enough tools for most, and it's fugly.

Also, notice how they marked this up from $99 to $129 just so they could come back a few weeks later and mark it back down to $99 and say "New Lower Price"?

^ bit ugly and looks a massive space waste, kind of like idea of flip down front making counter top area but as it then blocks lower unit drawer it not the best concept . Much better box options out there new and used in similar pricing .

Looks like it was designed by someone who's tool usage is limited to a keyboard and a cell phone, possibly a clipboard.

Good catch on that flip down shelf blocking the drawers, what if you need a tool from one and you have your project spread out on the shelf? Also it would make reaching stuff in the power tool area harder as it opens right into your way.

So I was wandering around in Lowes today looking for heavy duty extension cords and I found a display of tool boxes next to the Christmas trees. This one came home with me.

It is 41" with 8 drawers, #844440 and was marked down from $319 to $249. So Christmas came early for me this year. This one is going to be a grinder stand. I love the deep drawers. They will hold lots of grinding wheels and other shop stuff.

Decent deal for a big box. Mechanics are not the only ones that use tool boxes as construction tools are larger and this is a good fit for you. Finally a decent HF44 competitor and at a lower price.

Kobalt is not the only new toolbox at Lowes...check out the Lenox with double slides on the full-width drawer.

These new boxes may not be selling so well. The ones in my area are already on sale. IMG_1471.JPGIMG_1472.JPGIMG_1473.JPG

That is Lowe's new business model. They bring in something new and price it high then a week or two they drop to a "New lower price."

Seems to be, they upped the price of the power tool storage center just to drop it back down and say "New Lower Price". I also noticed HD plays a different game, once their black friday add inevitably leaks they send their lawyers out to get it scrubbed from the internet, they spend the next few weeks sending deceiving emails, notifications, and ads on the front pages of their app and website touting 'Black Friday Pricing' now, but if you've seen their actual black friday ad you know much of the specific stuff from the ad isn't priced as low as in the ad.

A week or so ago I was looking at this box at Lowe's and I went to shut the drawers on the bottom they were binding up.

Seems like the prices are a little high, considering you can get the home depot 52 inch matte black top and bottom for about 150 bucks or so less than the advertised price on one bottom?

I might be in the market for a bigger box.
Went to our local Costco and they had zero tool boxes of any kind in the store. Not surprising. Not many DIY'ers in wealthy Lake Forest.
The dark gray box Costco discontinued looks the same as the Husky at HD.
Menards has a couple of their Performax boxes on sale, will check them out. They might be too low-end.
Can't afford Snap On. This is for homeowner use and I have no brand loyalty.
Reasonably priced stuff on CL looks worn out or rusty.

So are these boxes any good?

I looked at a Kobalt 42" Chest combo at Lowes this morning, Top was $250, bottom was $350, so $600 for the combo. Made in China, it looked decent.

Are there any good combo units made in USA that are reasonable in price? Say under $1200 (42" minimum width)

I would get an International 24" deep box. One of the only domestic made 24" deep boxes available for less than $2K (its made in Canada).

If you get the top box, that will push the price over $1200 though.

Looked at the Menards Performax boxes and they have paper-thin metal drawers that you can flex with your hands, and only two pop rivets holding the drawer slides on. I would pass on these.
