Boy what a cool gift, today I stopped by to check on my dad, I try to do so about 3-4 time a week. he is in his late 70's and goes to work every day, rain or shine. He drives a school bus for special needs children for the last 10 yrs, but what he does most is miss my mom. We lost her to cancer in 2002, and for my dad I think he still misses her as much today as he did the day she died. He goes through his days with a brave face and a smile, and I know when I visit him and tell him stories and joke with him or talk about my wife and little girl he enjoys it, but I also know that when I have to leave the loneliness set in and sets in fast. Some times by the time I get home he already has called my wife and is talking to her.( we live about 5 min. away). Well today I stopped by for a quick cup of joe and a few laughs and he gives me his old safety glasses from when he worked at Pepsi for 34 years! He tells me that he wore them every day he worked, and back in the old days the glass bottles were known to burst and glass would go flying everywhere, and that's why it has the wire mesh sides. He also told me that at the end when they went to plastic bottle he didn't have to wear, but it didn't feel right not having them on. I was so moved by this I almost cried! But I just thanked him over and over, then he say's "listen I'm not going anywhere if you know what I mean I just have to start cleaning out some stuff and I want you to have all the tools! My Gandpa's from the old country and all of his" . He has the tools he uses in his toolbox, but he has about 3 metel chest and 4 or 5 small toolboxes for me to have. So, the next couple of weeks I'll be updating you on what I got. Love ya Dad! P.S. If you have an old set of Safety glasses lets see them!

The glasses look very familiar. I suspect they were the industry standard from the early 60s into the 90's. I started in a factory at GE in 1967 and wore the same configuration for many years.

Mine are the same, I used them for a few years every day a few decades ago. Dug them out a couple years ago and realized my old "regular" prescription thats in them now suits my older eyes for doing closer work like on cars. Something really messy though and I switch back to my current glasses and a big cheap plastic thing for protection.

When I worked as a bench machinist (early 70's) the company paid for prescription eye glasses like the one above.

They fit snug and felt sturdy; I can see why he continued to wear them.

The thing I like most about those old glasses is you never know you have 'em on.

I know what you mean I tried them on and I like how they feel better than my every day corrected glasses.

Those maybe old school but I just ordered new prescription safety glasses just like them with the mesh side shields. That type is a particular requirement at one of the facilities I frequent since they can be fitted with prescription lenses and also meet their other requirements.

Where did you order them from ? Was it on the internet? I need a pair like these but with prescription lenses too.

I ended up ordering them at the safety glass store at one of the plants I go to that has them as a requirement. I just gave them my script. I could have ordered on-line or at an optician locally but none of the local ones that carry the brand stocked the models that were acceptable. As far as I was concerned I really wanted to try them on to get the best frame size.

The ones that we could choose from are from "AO Safety" which is part of 3M I believe. I think I ordered the F9900 or F9800 with the mesh "breezecatcher" side shields.

Attached is a link to their site. Then you can probably search for a local optician or even google the net for internet vendors. Look under the products tab for a catalog.
