Balancing cost vs. benefit is never an easy decision. I *really* hate buying things twice. If you *really* only have one project, it probably won't make much difference. But if there's any chance you'll want to do other things in the future, it's better to spend the money.

From everything I have seen Quincy is very reliable, excellent support, and relatively efficient. I don't have much experience with other brands, but from what I can tell the Quincy is significantly better than other brands at that price point.

No matter what you do, don't go with oil-less. From everything I have read & heard the sound will deafen you.

Thanks, I suppose I'll bite the bullet and get the quincy.. You can't beat free shipping from aircompressorsdirect.com (I believe). Besides the blue will match my Miller collection... sort of :dunno:

I hope I'm not too much of a bother, but I would like to know what brand table is that in you machine area, I'm talking about the white frame w/wooden top. Shop is looking good, lots easier to build out here in the Suburbs not quite as picky in the county compared to city. County just requires permits so they know how much to tax you on improvements.:(:(

Sorry didn't see this till just now. The legs are a Shop Fox workbench & the top is just a solid core door. The Shop Fox system has a good weight to it & seems very solid, but still can be easily disassembled & moved. I think it's a very good bang-for-the-buck.

Progress Report

Another quick update: last week I covered the electronics workbench and moved it into place to test-fit. I still have to add the melamine layer and aluminum front trim:

p1798558371-4.jpg

I also received the final pieces for the CNC Platform kit last week. This weekend I started assembling it. I set up the electronics bench for laying out the parts:

p1811108786-4.jpg

And assembled it on my other workbench:

p1655045102-4.jpg

I'm also building a steel base for the CNC Platform using my BuildPro jig table. It makes it *so* much easier to get everyting straight!

p1536563700-4.jpg

I'll post more assembly pictures as well as pictures of my plasma torch holder design for it later this week....

CNC table base progress

I made good progress today welding together the base to go underneath the CNC Platform. The structure is a welded (square) tube structure:

p1646792413-3.jpg

p1748222454-3.jpg

The design is an adaptation of the wooden stand Brian uses. It sticks out a few inches all the way around. So I had to figure out how to support the legs. I was going to do an X-brace under the top, but that would have used a lot more metal. I ended up using the scrap to create corner brackets:

p1699135718-3.jpg

So far it's working great! I'm going to screw on 12-gauge steel to cover the top and sides. But for now it works great as-is. Now I can finish assembling the CNC itself.

Looks great! Are you going to add feet to the stand or just use the levelers on the CNC? Second part to that question - any plans to tie the two structures together?

Won't be too much longer!

I'm planning on putting rubber pads underneath. I can do the gross leveling with the feet of the CNC table itself.

I could tie them together pretty easily by swapping out the feet. I'll see how well it works this way first & decide from there.

Sooooo cool! Do you have plans for any more digital manufacturing toys? Keep us posted!

I'm planning on making changeable "heads" for the CNC table to allow for Plasma Cutter, 3D Printer, Laser Cutter and probably a Mill attachment.
I also need to get a Lathe at some point....

Progress on CNC Table Assembly

So far this weekend I finished assembling the table rails and mounted the gantry. Tomorrow I should be able to finish the mechanical assembly and start it up!

It's alive!

I finished wiring up the Electronics and did an initial test running it manually using the iMach hand controller. I still need to adjust the bearings, put the wires into cable trays, cover the base, etc. etc. But so far it's running well.

I call it Minion 2 (My CNC mill is Minion 1):

Sorry the sound is somewhat messed up; I forgot to turn off the air cleaner running behind it.

Re: Updated Tool Plan

What software are you using. I am looking to model my garage soon and want something like this

I've gone back and revised the tool layout plan a bit. I've moved the interior column to 9' from the back wall and shortened the partition to 7', enabling me to fit exactly 3 3' wide cabinets on each side and a 4' wide cabinet on the end. And I can use the area above it more effectively for large-item storage.

That also gives me a bit more width to roll stuff between the sides. I think I can get it so that I can roll a gantry crane almost everywhere if I can find one the right size (or make one).

I'm now going through and planning the contents of each cabinet (e.g. tools, small parts, large parts, etc.). The cabinet on the end will be perfect for small parts storage (i.e. tons of little containers).

The renderings and floorplan were done using Autodesk Revit...probably a bit pricey for what you want to do. I happen to have a copy for my day job.

Most people use Sketchup. It works fine & there's lots of free object files on-line for cabinets & such.

This weekend I mounted more of the metal wall panels above the workbench. I'm not sure what I'm going to use them all for yet, but for now it gives me space to store welding supplies at one end and CNC equipment at the other:

p1824410553-3.jpg

I also fabricated a pen holder for the Platform CNC to run tests on alignment, accuracy and repeatability. I'm working on a g-code test pattern to run on it.

p1827292347-3.jpg

I'm also working on the design for the Plasma holder and water table insert. I'm thinking of using Stainless Steel to make it easier to clean up. I'll post the plasma holder design in a bit. Here's the current model for the water table:

p1661176055-3.jpg

I've also come up with a new design for the metal storage rack for against the opposite wall. The bottom shelf is a separate wheeled cart that pulls out from the end. I'll put dividers on it to hold sheets. Rods and bars will go on the upper shelves and also pull out from the end.

Platform CNC Test Print

Here's my first attempt at a pattern test using the penholder. I need to get a finer tipped pen:

p1877715234-3.jpg

And a font test:

p1878728622-3.jpg

Most of the variance on these is from flex in the pen itself. I'm looking at techniques for adjusting each axis based upon the test measurements.

I just wanted to say hi and compliment you on your garage and the work so far on the CNC!

I would be surprised if all of the variance is not in the pen itself. You should not be able to see any noticeable variations. If you do, make sure everything is tight before adjusting. One other person found that the ring on the y-axis leadnut was not tight, allowing it to move a bit.

Here is the only video I have of the pen in use..

FYI there's currently a 2-3 month waiting list.

There is enough interest to fill 2-3 months! but I have not done a waiting list for the machine kits. When I am doing another run, which should be in the next week, I will just email everyone that has expressed interest with a link to make a deposit before making it public. This way, people who have expressed interest get the first crack at it and then everyone gets a chance at a spot. Fabrication of the kits takes about 8 weeks.

I'm an upholsterer and have thought about this table for also cutting leather..

That is a great idea! This is a setup that I have been interested in for cutting... I still would like to develop a tangential knife, but this seems to be a nice drag knife that would likely work well for leather!

Brian,

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm sure the flex is from the pen. I'm seeing bending in the pen and between the pen and aluminum sheath. The pen is not exactly sized correctly for the sheath; I've added aluminum tape between them to try to fix that (not the best solution). And I'm probably forcing it down into the paper too much.

I'm ordering materials for the water table and plasma torch bracket this week. I already have all of the torch height electronics, and I'm starting to figure out how to wire it up. Should have it fired up in the next couple of weeks.

Now I just have to practice my Stainless Steel welding skills :p

is this one of those "if you have to ask" you cant afford type tables??

I would love to have a small table top cnc with gantry in my garage, I used to work for Bystronic, there is no way one of their lasers will fit in my lil garage.

My first time on this thread and it's great! it's nice to see what a fellow Houstonian is doing with their garage/workshop. The heat and humidity here just almosts shuts down most garages during the summer, so I am definitely looking for ideas in that regard. You have a wonderful garage/workshop!

That's why I went with plenty of insulation and good A/C. I wanted to be able to use the space all-year-round.

FYI I just received my solution for small parts storage. I should have some good updates this weekend....

Parts storage & etc.

I purchased a second Lista toolbox with lots of shorter drawers to set up for small parts storage. It arrived last week and I finally started setting it up this weekend:

p1789660282-3.jpg

p1682437340-3.jpg

I'm putting everything in small plastic boxes that I'm going to label on the box and on the shelf bottom (ordered the label maker yesterday). That way I can take out the boxes for projects and know where to put them back correctly.

I also cut the 12 gauge sheets for the top and sides to the CNC table bench with the plasma torch, drilled and tapped countersunk holes to hold them on with black flat head screws. It gives it a very clean look:

p1865185980-3.jpg

And I cut the masonite for the top and sides to my electronics workbench. The last step is to cut and weld some angle iron to attach to the front:

p1647334679-4.jpg

Making progress slowly...

Damn that looks good!

You think one of the CNCs could be used for "foam"? just with a huge Y axis?

I made progress today on the Plasma torch holder for the CNC table. I'm using a linear slide attached via rings to the torch itself. I milled flats on the rings with my Tormach and tapped them to attach to the slide.

p1755418966-3.jpg

Using a linear slide enables it to have "give" in the Z axis in case it hits the table. Next I'm going to attach springs on the sides and magnets on the bases to attach to the mount.

I love your quick progress and the quality of your work. Where you affraid at any time that your cnc might fall off the small supports you had before putting the tabletop?

Not really. It's a bit hard to see but I welded tubing in the corners for the feet, so it was always well supported.

Today I'm receiving another 100 plastic boxes for the storage system, so I can really get that organized. And I have the rest of the parts for the Plasma Torch holder, so I'm excited to get that mounted. AND I picked up the steel for the water table and storage rack last weekend. If I focus I should be able to get a lot done over the holiday weekend!
