Thanks drives,
The fish is in fact providing the heat for the shop, but I also have a diesel burner in there too,
I'm so short on space that I've been contemplating evicting the fish to free up some precious space for tooling and building stuff.
My bride says she has the perfect spot for it in the yard, we will see.

Royce: so a new carport style outdoor eating area might be in the cards with the fish stove as the centerpiece? i'd hate to see that awesome thing sitting out just in the open weather. have any more of those supports like you used to build your deck to maybe build an industrial looking cover for your fish? or the hunt for more STUFF continues and I (we) are wishing you more luck.

i like the way your bride thinks and you two are a good pair.

good luck

drives,
I'm afraid I have more projects to complete before freeze up than I can cover right now.
But I can see hovering around the fish for fall cook outs.

She is a peach alright and we are like peanut butter and jelly.

Got the top fastened down on the 6' bench today.
I also figured out when I put the 12',the 3' and the 6' benches against the wall they were slated for, I'm into the door opening by 1'.
Sometimes I think, well, then again I think, well ****.
Looks like the 6' will have to relocate.

Royce: it looks like maybe you have an air conditioner in your way from moving the 3 bench combo over to keep it out of the doorway? any way you can just put your air conditioning unit up higher or on another wall so you can go with your original 3 benches in a row plan?

nice looking STUFF sitting on those great benches too.

drives,
That is a diesel fired heater.
I'm thinking building a shorter bench might be easier than moving the stove.
Also, I can use the 6' somewhere else in the shop, so it is not a total loss.
I'll study it a bit more before I commit.
Thanks

Royce: i probably should have realized that since you live in Alaska and that far north that you probably wouldn't need AIR CONDITIONING.

best of luck on the coming projects and did you find places for your fire hydrant vise stands yet? I really like how they turned out.

drives,
My only air conditioner, is a trip to the creek, when necessary!

Not yet on the vise stands.
I've really been tussling with the shop layout and it seems as I have too much stuff to work in the available square footage.
I'm going to do my best to add on before freeze up.
I have some obligations I hope to get finished in the next couple weeks and hopefully have time to make it happen this fall.
Thanks again and the best of luck to you too.

So then, my son in law just finished up serving a IBEW apprenticeship in communications.
My daughter brought over a bunch of junk from the old Fairbanks/Valdez telegraph line, thinking we could make a floor lamp to celebrate him journeying out.
We opted out of lighting this fun sculpture, thinking it really did not need lit.

So, I was minding my own business at the dump when two propane jugs jumped in my truck.
I got them home and jerked the valves out of them, then cut them in half.
Two of the haves will end up being shop light stands, one a sit down small vise stand and I don't know about the last one.

I was showing these tank stands to a friend and he asked me how I cut them with out blowing them up.
It made me think about some poor soul seeing what I posted here and hurting themselves.
If you are not experienced in performing hot work in explosive environments, cleaning, purging, cutting and welding on flammable vessels, please don't.
It is surely not worth the risk to anyones health and life.
Thanks

Royce: so how do you cut an old propane tank in half without blowing yourself up? cool looking stand and not sure exactly how you bent that pipe or did it come to you that way?

your yard art looks cool too. nice work

drives,
I am all about passing on skills, procedures and knowlage ,but I am reluctant to try teaching hot work over the internet.
I will say that these vessels were cleaned of all hydrocarbons and the atmosphere verified with a LEL meter.
It was then sawn with a portaband.

The pipe was a bend I made with a bender for the electrical service to the shop that did not fit.
It fit good on this stand.

The yard art is in their living room and I am afraid I may have passed on some of my garbage genes to my brood!

Thanks much

I was chatting up the brains of this outfit and she said, you know that bullet thingy we have? we should make a floor lamp out of it and one of those propane tanks for a base.
The bullet thingy she was referring to, is a spent 105mm cartridge.
So, we took a flashlight to test her theory.
I think she might be on to something or just on something, we will see.

Royce: even though it sort of has the cool factor i'm not sure that would be great for lighting unless you put a BLACK LIGHT inside it.

the only reason i asked for the propane tank cutting tips wasn't for me but for those handy guys like you that seem to make diamonds out of coal in their shops.

maybe there should be a thread about it with a lot of Safety Warnings and Cautions before doing this stated everywhere because you know guys try stuff like that all the time not knowing for sure what they are in for if the slightest thing goes wrong.

keep up the great work and also keep that CEO around because she has great ideas.

Drives,
I like the black light idea, I'll run it by the QC.

As to hot welds or hot or cold cuts on a hot vessel, it takes fuel, O2 and ignition to light something up.
Take away one and it is safe, take away two and it is safer, takeaway all three and it is safest.
I guess that is all I have to say about it, because every situation is different and there is no way to determine what procedure is safest without knowing every last detail.

I'll let her know you are bragging her up.
She will like that.

Thanks

I got the top on the 12' bench screwed down today.
Also got one of the two woodworking vises mounted.
Still need to add two legs to the frame and put a trim border around the perimeter of the maple top.

Made some headway on the 12' bench today.
Last two legs attached.
Second vise mounted.
80% of the finish stripped off.
10 or so screw holes plugged.
Ordered some walnut for the edges.
The end is in sight.

Got the two smaller tables stripped, scraped and screw holes plugged this afternoon.
Waiting on some walnut for the edges, should receive it midweek.

Worked on the 6' bench today and got the walnut glued and screwed around the perimeter.
I think i'll cut some maple plugs for the screw holes and see if the contrast looks good.

Royce: I like the thought of making a few wood plugs to fill in the screw holes and the different wood and color might give it a nice look. did you you use those 4 inch screws to put the trim on or do tell?

also what are you going to use to finish the wood? that Beeswax mix you mentioned you did for your steel stand or do you have a different mix for wood things?

looking great as per usual

Yes, on the long screws.
First coat will be 50/50 varnish and turpentine
Second coat will be 50/50 linseed and turpentine
Following coats straight linseed
Thanks

Got the screw hole plugs glued up tonight after dinner.
Hope to get them trimmed and start sanding tomorrow night.
Also got a close up pic of the walnut.

Thanks bulletpruf,
I'm a big fan of walnut too, particularly when it is wrapped around a piece of steel that fires projectiles!

Drives,
Always my pleasure

Dylanbrink,
You bet, thanks and it looks like we are neighbors, howdy.

Got the plugs bobbed off, everything sanded and the first coat of finish on.

Royce

PS
I chose to leave the ball dents because of the character they bring.

Just realized that one of my co-workers builds stocks for bullet throwers. He's looking for some walnut blanks locally (Italy) but no luck yet. Still need to replace the Browning A-bolt .300 Win Mag (matte finish/fiberglass stock) that I sold several years ago. Sweet shooting rifle that would group well under 1.5" at 100 yards with factory ammo. Thinking another .300 mag, but maybe Weatherby this time. On a Remington 700 action, with a custom black walnut stock, fluted 26" barrel, etc.

Ok, sorry for the hijack. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Royce: i agree that workbench could make any dining room nicer too. WELL DONE!!

since i'm an old bowler i agree with you leaving the old ball marks for a little character. since i'm battling FSD (flat surface disease) a bench like that might really help me keep it clean and ready to use. most of the bowling alley material i've been finding was stored improperly and has huge warping, but i'll find some eventually that is nicer.

you mentioned trades for some of your cool stuff and i wish i was closer. i've got things like this that work, but use 3 phase power that i don't have (yet) so they are just sitting. i'd love that stand with the Prentiss #20 sitting on it or one of those old fire hydrant stands especially the one with the American Scale #79 on it.

cheers

Royce, those tables look a treat! My SWMBO just commented she thinks the big one would make an awesome dining room table! I agree.

And yes walnut is lovely on projectile firing steel.
