New shop

Hey I'm looking for some help picking the right size wire for my shop.
My property has a 50 amp service currently
My shop is 200 ft away from my house.
I have dug a trench but im getting different wire sizes from the apps somwantbsome real life help from someone doing he same thing
I would like to have a 50 amp breaker in the shop.
I will be running 2 2500 watt water bowl heaters all winter and need to have a few plugs and yard light. Please let me know your thoughts on it and your experience is also helpful Thanks

Ok so you have 100 or 200 amp to house just using 50 amp breaker

I only have a 50 amp service to my farm right know. I have run a larger wire to accomadate a 100 amp service but don't have the permit to upgrade it yet with the electrical provider. I have 50 amps going to the house so I hoped to have 50 amps to the shop too. I should have a 100 amp service in the next 3 months they said.

Use that wire I have 200 amp too house 100 amp to garage about 60 ft.

Just for information, the wire pictured is URD and is only allowed to be installed outside of the structure. It does not have fire resistant insulation for interior installation.

Welp, this is a bit of a mess.

But lets assume you will eventually put in a 100 or 200 A service at the main house. (Your statement of "I should have a 100 amp service in the next 3 months they said." is odd...'they said'? How does a service just get upgraded at your home by unknown people at some unknown point in time? But anyway...)

Throw conduit in the ground, 200 ft, #4 copper wire. 3 pieces of #4, one of #6 for ground. You can use AL...upsize it to #2.

Dont listen to the poster corvette43056 above..he is giving you bad advice. #4 Al for his 100Amp service?

The issue you may run into is the existing loads on your house.

So what loads do you have in your house?

Not surprised. Keep the inspection ticket so when your house burns down you have it as proof for the insurance.

Just to add to that, the URD pictured just has a USE-2 rating, which cannot be installed above ground or enter a structure in any way, even in conduit. There is also URD that is dual rated, it also carries a RHH/RHW-2 rating, which can enter a structure as long as it is in a raceway.

I can list half a dozen inspection violations the inspector missed on my last home final. Becuase he missed them doesnt mean they dont exist.

IMO the idea is to build homes that meet code...not pass inspection.



Finally, there was a local home where the county inspector blew it. Total failure/rot/mildew of the crawl space leading to massive losses. Inspector and county were cleaved from the lawsuit by the courts- governmental immunity. The person(s) that did the work were held liable....So an inspection 'ticket' isnt a get out of jail card.
