So Ive had a lot of personal compressors in my lifetime (mostly Emglo) but this was a deal I couldnt pass up.

Its an old Kellogg American 331 pump (5 hp normally) but with a 3 hp setup. Everything is so heavy duty I had to take it apart to get it home. The picture of the pump kinda makes it look small but its about 20" tall. It didn't have a shut off valve so it filled his machine shop lines and the 80 gallon tank in about 7-10 mins.

Its a nice ASME tank with the drain on the side (great feature) so I don't have to bend over to drain the water out of it. This is seen on a lot of horizontal champion tanks. The baseplate is about 1/4" thick!

Im going to clean it all up and restore the 3 hp and use it at my home shop. If its not worth keeping, I have a 3 hp Lincoln super crazy duty motor I bought surplus I can throw on with a Mits drive. This on here is also three phase but Ill build a rotary phase converter with one of my old 7.5hp kicking around for a clean sine wave.

i got one at a deal and ended up scoring another pump so i have spare parts to fix down the road. i think its going to be working that 3hp motor. most of them are setup to run on a 5. pretty quiet for its size. not sure if you heard it run before buying.

gotta love those old motors. I had a Powermatic 12" planer from the 60's that had a 3HP motor with 1-1/8" shaft weighing in at 150 lbs.

No way. Look how small that pulley is. Its like having a 5' cheater bar. Itll prob do OVER 175 without tripping the breaker.

I did. Its actually apart now for a rebuild. I need Kevin to machine me a tool to remove the valves. You should see how thick the low pressure piston rings are. It doesn't really need a rebuild but I moved out of my shop and don't have three phase at home (obviously) so I have time to rebuild it.

I don't know the speed but I put a 5 hp on it with the matching pulley. It keeps up with my sand blaster full blast at 85/90 psi.

Hey we have the same vintage compressor along with the same centrifugal unloader! The valves shouldn't need a whole lot of oomph, I actually just used a couple of bolts sized for the right diameter screwed into a short steel plate with a 1/2" square drive hole for the torque wrench (holy sentence runon!).

Mine's a lot dirtier and greasier though.
