I've been wanting these for quite some time, and finally decided to pull the trigger. They're nothing special for most of you, but they are to me.

Nice. :D

Got a question for anyone that knows about the coating that most screw driver tips seem to have these days. What exactly is it? Is it a surface coating to improve grip or is it more like a different alloy or surface hardening or something.

A believe that a lot of the time it's a high-grip coating. Some cheaper brands just use black paint.

I don't think they're hardened, but am not certain.

Congrats on the purchase. Did you buy them new off the truck or off of ebay? We had a member on here selling an 8 piece set for $90 a few weeks ago but I believe they were orange.

It's called "Vapor Blasting". It is simply to remove the chrome which would otherwise chip off.

Ok thanks. So on the snap-ons it's just chrome removal. What about the brands that have like a black coat on the tips, is that just a gimmick?

It makes the tips have a bit more bite as well. The shafts are also cold forged and heat hardened. I've had a set of the SO mini screwdrivers for a year now, and they are awesome IMO. That's why I decided to get the bigger ones.
