It's a broken record but I'd much rather spend that same money on a used vice.

If you can find a good quality vise for the right price on the 2nd hand market in your area, I don't blame you.
But I didn't want a vise restoration project and the only bench vises in my local area are overpriced scrap metal boat anchors.

Here is a Wilton Bullet, HF based the Doyle vises on this design, and the guy wants $450 in rusted beat to **** condition...

I'm not questioning your decision at all (you do you) and it's up to whoever buys it to determine if the price is fair but that Wilton actually looks to be in very good shape. That looks like surface rust and I don't see evidence it has been beat to ****.

Sure, but $450 for a restoration project vs $300 or less for a new premium quality Yost ADI, etc. When I looked for used vised 10 years ago this is what I saw in my area- overpriced boat anchors. I gave up on used vises; it's just ridiculous that people think that 50 year old cast iron is magic as compared to new. No one here says, you have to buy 50-year-old sockets, the new ones are inferior. But somehow vises are different.

It's a regional thing. Vises around here have to be pretty damned special to get much over a hundred dollars for them. The local auction has a few most weeks and other than the trendy Wilton's, ver few hit the one fifty mark.

For all the guys saying that the older vises are ratty and beat up, I wondered what all the fuss about older vises was myself. I ended up searching Craigslist every day because I was looking to spend less than $100. I ended up picking up a Simplex vise for $60 a few years ago and man o man what a sweet honey this thing is. The screw is still buttery smooth and it's an absolute pleasure to use. My original plan was to completely tear it apart and rebuild and paint it just because I like Gucci looking tools. Hell to the no, the only thing I've done is add soft jaws. This thing will outlive me by many years.

I got the 6.5" Doyle vise last week and while it's fairly smooth, I see it does have a few metal shavings and other junk inside. I'll have to clean and re-grease it when it's warmer. As for the question of why buy one of these over other options? I plan to mount this on a service truck for farm use and I thought a vise with a sealed screw design would be a good idea since it will be exposed to dust and the usual outdoor conditions. I'm giving the Doyle a chance since the specs seem ok and I don't really want to spend the kind of money Wilton wants for a new Tradesman vise.

Add me to the list of those that vote for a Good ole Vintage USA vise at that price point

I frequently see nice condition 4" vises advertised locally (CL) for less than $129
Nice
Not beat up nor rusty

It is magic as best of best was cast steel or cast high tensile pearlitic malleable iron made without compromise that was an absolute chore and marketed as unbreakable by some of the best/proudest manufacturers .
Similar grade today new are 1 to 2k a vise ...
People with no engineering manufacture knowledge or decades of use experience don't truly realise the actual difference lol .
Old vise is one of those tools hard beat in terms of quality and actual mass and can make an incredibly good value buy used.
I understand used not going be for everyone but you also need understand only thing magic about a 300-400 buck modern vise is how they played the marketing so consumer thinks it a proper manufacture effort product .

If you post your location I bet one of us old vise fans can find a good used vise on C/L for way less than $700
What major city do you live near?

I appreciate the vise community that is represented on this forum. I was put in touch with a guy who offered me a great vintage vise for reasonable money. Ultimately I went with a Yost 750 Di rotating vise for the things I do (which turned out to be the right thing), but if I'd decided on a more-traditional vise I would have definitely invested in the time and relatively small amount of additional money for an older MiUSA vise.

In my area, the SFO Bay Area prices run about as high as anywhere. Here are 3 good deals I found this morning. The 3rd one, the smallest in the highly regarded C series combination vises looks to be just about brand new. The other 2 are older and for some guys need paint, but are priced lower. Prentiss and Athol are to some guys here rated even higher than Wilton bullets.

Any of those three are, in my book, preferred to a new Chinese HF vise

And yes indeed, the SF Bay Area has as HIGH prices as anywhere
