New Wright purchase, and Hardware Sales experience...

I recently picked up a set of Wright sockets (355, deep 6-pt metric 6-19) and 3430 ratchet from Hardware Sales in Washington state.

First, let me say that Hardware Sales is AWESOME. Great service, first through fleaBay and then through their own website, where I actually made the purchase. Ordered Sunday night with standard shipping, arrived yesterday afternoon. For an American living in Canada, this is a breath of postal fresh air... Canada is a postal backwater, and getting anything this fast and for this cheap is truly remarkable.

Second, I'm less than impressed with the Wright sockets. They're nice enough, but I'd have expected a $100 set of sockets to be just a little bit nicer... The broaching on the 7mm is incomplete. This isn't a big deal for me, as I rarely use a 7mm deep socket, let alone in 3/8". (In fact, the 7mm looks like it came from a completely different set; the taper/chamfer is a different depth or diameter than the 6, 8, or 9.)

The larger ones all have clean broaching, but they also have minor rust spots - new, out-of-the-shrink-wrap rust. Again, not a huge deal for me as the humidity here rarely gets above 5%. I just would have expected slightly better, especially with QC-guy 415's "proud" sticker on the bottom of the neat plastic rail.

And coming from an old Tennessee family, I can imagine my forebears making similar tools...and I can imagine them doing a better job. I have some Taiwanese Westward sockets that are perfect. Can't Ohio muster the same?!

It's very possible that it is from a different era.. I've seen past instances where dates have been mixed, and the socket lengths being different was a dead giveaway. What is the date code? Looks like maybe 07 on the 7mm but can't tell due to the angle if that's a part number or not. I never have been one to get worked up about the inside of a socket, as long at the fitment is good along with the exterior finish where my hands aren't gonna get pieces of chrome lodged in them. Obviously.. It's your $100 of hard earned money, if your not happy "send them back".

On a side note.. Wright deep wells have utilized a short broaching for quite sometime, not sure when they changed it up, but very common for older sockets. I've Personally never ran into a issue with this type of socket, report back on any date code changes within the set.

Not sure where to find the date code. Is it three letters? And then how do I interpret them?

I don't have a problem with the shallow broaching - just the thick burrs at their base. And even then, I don't really have a problem with them - I just don't get it! I thought they had slightly higher standards, though I never expected Snap-On, etc...

Also, I should add/ask: my 3430 ratchet came with NO lubricant inside. Like, absolutely bone dry. Is this normal? I don't really mind, as I have lubes I prefer anyway, but it's something to look out for if you haven't pulled your Wright ratchet apart.

Im Not sure why they Carry the Burrs (Inside) at the Base, I Own lots of there Tools from the 90's-Present and the Older ones all had it. I also own just about Every Wright Ratchet made, And they all come "Dry" i suppose. I use 3-1 oil on them, Because they are stamped "Oil only". I really dont think anything you have mentioned is representative of there "Standards", Wright has set the Bar fairly high in regards to putting out a Tool that stands the test of time. Obviously as a Consumer your "Standards" are what matter... If those things you mentioned bother you.. Send'em back..

As far as the Date Code, They have changed it over the Years, Started out with Numbers (Year), Went to a Alphabet code, then back to Numbers and now they are using a 3 digit code. The Newest Ratchets i have all have A1K. <---- Not really sure how to interpet that.

Wright tools are for for industrial use. In the in field, in the mud. Oil is just going to make it gum up faster, it won't last any longer
