Nextec prices are crazy high, what am I missing?!

A few years back I took advantage of the plummeting prices of the Craftsman Nextec line. My first Nextec purchase was the drill and right angle impact driver set for $50. Later my local Sears outlet had the drill, circular saw, sander, and flashlight set for a similar price. I picked that up and gave my father the spare drill as I had already given him an impact driver when those were on clearance for like $30. I never thought of these as great tools just a great value at clearance prices.

Fast forward to now. My impact driver got damaged and I want another one. Sears no longer sells them so I turn to eBay. People are asking $150 for used impact drivers!? The more traditional pistol design Nextec impact drivers are going for more like $50-100 but the right angle ones are going for over $100 in beat up condition. Is there something special about these Nextec things I'm missing?

BTW, rather than spending that much on a discontinued line I bought the 18V Ridgid drill, impact driver set Home Depot had for $120. A lot more power and a "free" drill upgrade.

It's the market. I sold a Craftsman 19.2v hedge trimmer for about 150-200, I believe. People have the system and don't want to invest in a new one and I think that Craftsman has that heritage factor where people just want it because of their fond memories when it was a decent brand.

I don't know, but I sold a set of good condition Craftsman Pro screwdrivers on eBay for $80... when I searched for past sales I was surprised at the value.

My nextec drill just released the magic smoke and i'd love another as i have an impact, light and jigsaw, but same thing for me, i'll move to M12 or Bosch 12v before spending that much. Want to buy the stuff i have?

I own about 6 or 7 Nextec tools, which includes 2 right angle impacts. One impact that I use, and one still new in the box with the case, charger and battery. It was hard to pass up purchasing an extra when Sears had them on sell for $30 a few years ago. A bare battery alone was near that price. I’ve seen the crazy prices on eBay and have considered listing it, but can’t help feel that as soon as it’s sold, the one I use will take a dump. It’s probably my favorite of the Nextec line, but not a fan of the touchy forward and reverse lever! Please no PM’s to sell.

These do turn up on CL from time to time at around $50, and sometimes on eBay as part of a collection.

They only turn up when you aren't looking for one though.

This was a few years back so I might be leaving something out. I got the drill, impact, oscillating tool, dremel, flashlight, 'hammerhead' thing, 4" saw, and the 12v usb charger. Wound up I think 5 batteries & 4 chargers. Give or take. They were essentially M12 tools, almost 1 for 1 with the first generation as the M12 and even the Bosch were coming out.

I had well under $200 into it all told. Lot of lucky sales and free/bonus points. Sold it to a guy at work for $150 about 2 years later. He was amazed when I told him the price for 'all that'. I put the money into buying the M12 drill/driver kit with '3 free bare tools' and essentially in one purchase bought back everything I had in Nextec under M12 for less but with a few fewer batteries.

However, don't even consider the Nextec string trimmer, but otherwise they are good tools if you find them for a decent price with a battery that wasn't already used up. But still there is better value in the M12 line especially nowadays.

I actually have two of the drills. One of mine let the magic out so I bought another off ebay (only $30 new). Very recently I found you can buy "the switch" which is actually the whole power train for ~$20. So I bought that and fixed my first drill. That all in addition to the Ridgid tools I just bought.

Weird but Nextec ain't worth these "collector" prices.

The standard batts were 1.3ah and the battery with the light in the bottom was considered their XC at 1.6

I'd watch for a $99 deal on an M12 kit. Even if brushed it'll be just as good or better than the Nextec and the battery technology is now way ahead.

I had a bunch of the Nextec stuff 'cause it was cheap as stated here. But Craftsman jumped ship and even before they abandoned it other companies that cared were outpacing it.

Sorry, I know it's not what you want to hear but leave the boutique items to the quirky collectors and move on.

I just recently gave away the last of my Nextec to a friend in need, I had no idea people actually WANTED it anymore than I figured people are frantically seeking 8-track or Beta players....

No issue with what I want to hear. I used it as an excuse to upgrade to the Ridgid set. Yes, I would rather spend $30 to get the same clearance price as last time but I don't mind the upgrade. The Nextec didn't really keep up with a light framing job I did. This gave me an excuse to upgrade without guilt!
