Nice upgrades in my tiny garage

...thought there might be some interest in what I'm up to in my small (single) garage. I use it for many things, but mainly to keep up with my p-cars ('88 944S, '95 993 C4).
Started like this:

That black set of drawers is my main box, a Gerstner National (not International). I really like it but have out grown long ago. Jammed drawers, satellite boxes here and there.

Today I put in the Lista workbench, with the rough placement of the new Ridgid 5" and Yost wood working vises:

I have a Lista 28" W, 13 drawer eye-height cabinet on casters coming (had to send that back unfortunately - damaged in shipping). I'll post again when that goes in.

Any one have any clever ideas how to get that 650 lb cabinet off the palette?

The Ridgid is a good vise.

On the full-size cabinet, it's not hard. First, take out all the drawers and the slider things (no idea what they're called, but they come out easy). Then just move the carcass of the thing over (and down) in small steps. You can move it laterally on any kind of dowel rods, pretty much. You can also slide it on cardboard.

Just move in small increments and think of how leverage can make it easier and safer every step of the way.

Yeah, a lot of the upgrade was simply pitching most of what was there, wasn't it? Some has to be kept, and it's back:

Also mounted the vises. I really like the Yost. Made some oak faceplates for it today.

That is a great color combo, and better yet, with that Porsche.
I had to get very creative getting both new cabinets off the back of my truck. Engine hoist, weight distribution, rope, carabiners, and truck air bags.

You like that, heh? Me too. From the golden age of Japanese electronics - still works perfectly. Ordinarily tuned to WFAN (sports radio) and comes on with the light switch.

If you haven't mounted the metal working vise may I suggest you not mount it. Either use C clamps to hold it when you need to use it or make a plate up with a piece of square tubing welded to the plate that you can clamp in the below bench wood working vise.

Vises never seem to be in the right place in a small work shop and with the wood top I assume you aren't doing major metal working, grinding, welding, beating on things, etc. so don't give up that much bench space if you don't have too.

Not a bad thought, thanks. It's mounted though. I my case this vise is going where the old vise had been for 20 years, so I know I like it there (you can see the old setup in picture one).

Had my wife's Civic up yesterday for some minor stuff, and I'll post pics of the shark (928) on it as soon as possible.

Is that 3/4 you used on top?

I didn't think about how heavy it would be, but with a sheet handle it's alright.

Is it possible to cut a channel for the hydraulic line and then cover it back up? I'd think it would be handy to be able to always have it ready to go.

What about a countersunk D-ring dead center on the board and an inexpensive hoist attached to the ceiling? You could raise the lift while you're lowering the hook on the hoist line, hook it up and then take it the rest of the way to the ceiling.

...got in an oil change today. Non trivial on the 993, but sure goes much easier this way.

Yup

I have a couple of the same units dw and sc. I take the drawers out and you can easily then put them on a good moving dolly, one with soft gray rubber wheels that roll over things better. Moved mine this way way too many times. Ithe empty shell is only a couple 100 #'s

Another advantage to this kind of lift is that when you are walking around the car it is not in the way. Doesn't outweigh the better access and height of a two post, but in this garage, only way to go.

---hung some inexpensive Ikea Cabinets that I like above the big Lista. Spray painted the doors Rustoleum Sunrise Red and added the rail handles. I think it came out pretty good:
