Figured I would start a thread to keep all my projects together. You guys bare with me, I'm kind of ADD so I have lots of things going on at once. I bounce around from project to project, sometimes screwing something up so you may see some blunders along the way.

To kick it off, here is a Craftsman work bench before and after job I did for my potna. I refurbed his vise too but no before pics of it. The original top was toast so we found some 2" thick butcher block restaurant table tops that fit the bill perfectly. The top was 30" deep so I ripped it to 24" and used the rip as a back stop.

Judging from the quality of your work, I'd bet even your so-called blunders look pretty darn good!

Nice! I have one of those Lyon organizers. Mine is still unrestored but in very good condition. Mine is an army green colour.

Thanks guys, kinda hard to tell from this pic but here is my latest blunder. I used some shrink wrapping to mask off one drawer on my HF roll cart, scuffed and painted it. It looked good so I wrapped the other drawers, scuffed and rolled the cart outside to cut down on overspray in the shop. Temp change from inside to out, and problems with the rattle can nozzle along with probable user error, I got runs down all three of the other drawers. It went from a 15 minute makeover to a fvcked up do it all over again kind of project... :lol_hitti

New project, can you see it coming together :D

I've been using this exam table as an outdoor padded paint table until I found the perfect use for it. I think I have finally found what fits, just needed to do some mods, fill some holes and paint it tomorrow. Here is where I am now, don't bash me on my welds :lol_hitti

Thanks guys, today was re-wiring day for a motor and forward/reverse switch. I changed out the old dry rotted two wire cord for a grounded 3 wire cord.

Anyone spot the blunder here?

Yup! You didn't paint it before you put it back together. Lol! J/k. Your projects look good! I'm restoring an old motor like that right now too. Going back as original as I can with it.

The blunder in my last post above was forgetting to run the new wires through the motor back plate(top left), before hooking them up. Guess I could have painted it too :lol_hitti

So you saw the bench coming together, and you saw the motor getting rewired, here is what I ended up doing with the two.

First some paint mixing, then sprayed with my cheap HF hvlp gun.
pic02444.jpg

The next day I installed the handles and drawers on freshly greased tracks. Then I ripped a 2" thick, 30" wide butcher block down to 26.5" and used the 3.5" drop as a back stop. The bench is 47.5" overall to fit in any 4' space comfortably.
pic02445.jpg

This is the small Craftsman lathe I just picked up recently. After knocking down to some manageable pieces, I brush painted with the remaining bench paint. I used a lathe part to custom match the Rustoleum before painting, it's pretty close for only using gray and black.
pic02446.jpg

Then the table, motor and lathe come together as planned!

Thanks Mohawk Dave, I picked up a few of those from a CL seller that got them from a restaurant closure. They were table tops, he had quite a few rectangles this size, some square and a couple rounds. I knew they would come in handy one day so I got a few for future projects.

Very nice! I would love to find a piece of butcher block. All the Hipsters around here have made that repurposed stuff as valuable as gold. That top would cost me $300

Here's a lil 4 drawer parts organizer I picked up at a garage sale last week, of course I had to paint it to match the rest of my cabinets.
pic02454.jpg

and this is my friend's Six Fo, he brought it by for me to put speakers in the kicks, redo the sail panels that had fallen and put in a new back deck with 6x9's. The previous owner had a pair of 10"s in the back deck and the sail panels were coming loose, I matched the materials and fixed him up.

Thanks B-man!!

Ok, I sold the 6" lathe a few hours after listing it but due to weather, will not deliver for another coupe days. I still wanted to make sure everything was fresh and after seeing the Old Motor Wiring thread, I decided to completely rewire the motor inside. Prior to this, I was intimidated to mess with the guts to be honest but I figured you guys could bail me out if I screwed anything up. Well, it works great and if this wiring last half as long as the last, the new owner will get his money's worth.

Thanks shephd!

This is what had my free time ******* over the weekend. I didn't get a good "before" pic, just seen in the upper left of the garage sale pic here.
pic02473.jpg

I started with the motor wiring, it was complete toast.
pic02494.jpg

New wiring with ground.
pic02495.jpg

Forgot to get pics after sand blasting and priming, here is final coat drying.
pic02496.jpg

Here you can see the previous owners attempt at fixing the wire grill and the broken sections.
pic02502.jpg

After repair and the tools used.

And back together, now it actually oscillates!! :willy_nil

Had a few minutes to fab up some plier racks and peg board organizers from the wire shelving. Thanks GJ for all the great ideas!

The two pieces on the left show where I cut the wire, third piece is shaped for a plier rack and the one on the right is the scrap.
pic02512.jpg

I took the scrap and bent a couple 90's, then trimmed the excess.

The fan looks bad-***!! Nothing like the good 'ole ones that will cut your fingers off with openings large enough to put a rump roast through.

Thanks TMT, you would not believe how many times I tried to take the motor windings out of that housing without success. I finally decided to just paint it and worry about the wire later. While painting, I swear the windings fell the fvck out on the paint bench....:lol_hitti no complaints, I guess since I did get to totally rewire it but dang it put me through some troubles. I have quite a few hours in that little fan but am overall satisfied with the outcome.

Here is the painted plier rack in use, all Craftsman gear :willy_nil

and I made some baffles for a pair of 6-1/2"s I had laying around and hung my new front stereo speakers in the headlight openings of a Chevy grill. Also hooked my surround sub up so I know my neighbors will be thrilled :willy_nil

Got started on my new lathe table, the attachment is a rendering I did on sketchup for the idea. I'm building it out of obtanium I had laying around, reuse/repurpose metal from server and file cabinets.

Upside down for easy layout.
pic02525.jpg

Framed up and burned in, needs a couple more cross members.
pic02526.jpg

Nut plates for the adjustable feet.

More this evening, hope to have it painted and assembled by the weekend. :willy_nil

Thanks guys.

Just need some paint, then I can mount and level the lathe. I will put some expanded metal below the flat file for material storage once I find some.

I've heard of "unobtanium". As in, super-rare (generally vintage car parts) you can't even afford to look at, let alone buy.

You sure score a lot of nice "obtanium" in your neck of the woods! Between scads of scrap metal vultures and the retro-junk hipsters in this town, I can't find any metal laying around. Obtanium is very rare 'round these parts. In fact, I'd say it's almost unobtanium. ;)

Love all the creative re-purposing you do with your projects. Nice work!

It's getting that way everywhere. Scrap is worth so much anymore, it goes straight to the melter and shipped to China. We used to have steel yards everywhere around here that had a 'random' yard where you scavenge through cuts and drops and pay by the pound. Those are long gone. You have to think outside the box now days. I had two opportunities at the auction recently to buy some good 2" square tube and some 1". The 1" was in the form of some kind of display rack and there was a bunch of it. Sold for $15. And the 2" was on a monster weight set that had sat out side for some time. It sold for like $10. I just didn't need any obtainium at the time.
