Since brother Dan has received the package, I will go ahead and post the last pics of his seat job. This is the rear seats, along with a matching beer coozie I made for him and a small makeup bag for his wifey. They will be cruising in style, though I recommend soft drinks only in the coozie while driving. [emoji38]

that GREEN! Wow. Really impressed on all counts, including the aesthetic consideration in the stitching pattern on the top vs bottom. Beautiful details - simple and elegant!

Oh, that's a coozie? I thought it was a tampon holder to go with the purse :D

I kid, I kid. It looks awesome and I'm sure Mr. Dan is more than pleased with your work. It looks awesome and makes me wish that my Mustang's interior was in rougher shape, though I think I'll still hit you up to collaborate on a custom console.

Finally, when are you going to sell that erector set? I notice you didn't bring it to the garage sale...

My turn............WOW. Nines like I said on the phone I am beyond impressed. Your work is outstanding. Lisa loves the bag and says she will use it every time we are in that car. Like I said to her, how many women have a purse that matches the upholstery of their car. Today is the first day we are going to have sun since I got them so if time allows (and I'll make it happen) I plan on starting to get them back where they belong. I will post pictures here as well as in my garage thread. Again, thank you sooooooo much. And the plate is going up next to Cuda's fishnets on the wall. You earned that spot. So bidding for that space is now off the table :lol_hitti

Super thanks guys!

Strouty, I can make you a purse if you want one, or a man purse, or custom tool bag or whatever. I made a custom tool bag that I keep in my truck and use at the junkyard that holds 40-55lbs of tools at any given time. It's held up for several years now, made from Cordura with a piece of thick leather sandwiched between a thinner leather and the Cordura in the bottom panel for extra rigidity. I'll try to get a pic later.

Bonnneyman, shaving bag sounds interesting, I may steal that idea and see what I can come up with. :headscratch

Jon_beer, the green was as close to oem as my supplier had in stock and the pattern was copied from the original seats so I can't take credit for that. I just made a couple changes like a single sided seam, instead of the piping for a more updated look.

Merc, I'm pretty sure that you need a pro touring interior in that badass mustang so it's really just a matter of time before we do it. I can see a dash to deck custom console with split rear seats so be ready, its coming.

Thanks for the props Dan, I hope the install goes smooth for you and I figured if Lisa didn't like the purse, it would at least make a good wall hanger/conversation piece! As for the plate, I had a couple of them in numerical order and only given one to another member a few years ago(my mind slips as to who got it) so it's not as cool as a matching plate, but second best imo since they are sequential. I believe that I have two more left and will be hanging one on my wall for sure.

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the compliments and y'all stopping by! Be sure to check back for vise updates, I'll probably be back in the shop this afternoon finishing up some stool cushions for Mom so I will take some vise pics then.

Nines, it looks like the "bath" did it justice. I've got to set me up one of those things. I've got a couple of vises that could use it.

The bag does look like can handle a lot of tools.

If anyone wants to see those seat covers back on the seats, go over to my thread. I don't want to hijack Nines thread.

The electrolysis bath is simple Dan, you can easily use a battery charger and bucket or tote as long as the piece is submerged.

I've had 48lbs of tools in that bag at one point, and could fit a few more smaller tools in there if needed but last time I went through it, I removed a bunch of duplicate and cracked sockets along with a 3lb drilling hammer and a small ball pein then narrowed my selection down a lot. It's sitting just about 40lbs in the pic.

You(and anyone else for that matter) don't have to worry about hijacking, I like pics as do most members so all you guys are welcome to post comments questions and pics here.

Thanks cbacres, Dan did an absolute great job removing the old and installing the new so there was lots of teamwork involved!

Thanks Bill, I haven't done any clothing since I was a kid but I can imagine the thought that goes into clocking the collars and sleeves etc. It's mind boggling what suit tailors go through. I made simple shorts as a youngster and later in my teens I made vests for a group of friends and myself to hold paintball gear. My how time flies, that's been almost 30 years ago now...

If you really want a sewing challenge, make a kilt. Those damned precisely spaced blind pleats had me waking up screaming in cold sweats long after I was done.

Thanks for the compliment Nines. I'm trying to do your work justice. And here's the back seat done.

I'm not installing them in the car until the top is on. When I do I'll be showing them off some more.

Nines, more than anything I want to be able to make my own purse, that bag looks great. You may need to start a "Show us your sewing projects" thread. There are a lot more people that do sew, plus even more that are interested or would be enticed into buy a sewing machine.

Thanks guys!

Great idea Strouty, I will do that this evening when I get home!

Bears Fan, I don't want anything fancy for the junkyard, this bag is function over form and has held up for quite a few years with no wear though it is dirty outside from several transmissions leaking on it and all the grease/dirt from junkyard cars. There are a few smaller tool bags I made inside of it to organize screwdrivers, pliers etc too. Those hand straps are sewed together at the bottom, between the layers of Cordova and two pieces of leather so I doubt they will give out any time soon. I think the zipper is the only weak link in the bag, if it goes I guess I'll have to make another but until then, this is it.

Thanks for stopping in guys, I'll make a thread and link to it later!

Strouty, what section would you put it in if it were you? Too much going on today to start a new thread, maybe tomorrow.

I like that Junkyard bag nines! I couldn't/wouldn't use one myself, but that's to avoid past issues from cropping back up. - More on that later.

Question to Nine: On the handles, is that an endless strap, or does each one sew to the other on the bottom? That looks similar to the straps on the carry/covers for my TentCots(r). One is an endless loop, and very strong and carried the weight, and one is simply sewn into the "bag" on the sides, and is clearly straining the bag material when I use them to carry the TentCot.

If your's is not an endless strap, my suggestion (For anyone doing one for themselves, or modifying a duffel for the purpose) would be to go for the endless loop, and overlap at the handle, sewing the overlap so that you get a thicker handle area that the opposite handle lays on top of. That way you get a beefier handle to grip (maybe even put a couple of snaps fore and aft to the handle to capture them together)

I used to take tools into a junkyard in a bucket or two, and carry smaller parts out the same way. then i wound up with "tennis elbow" in both arms from the constant weight. That took years to heal, even with constant PT. (and can still flair up once in a while if I'm stupid about carrying things...)

To cut the weight, I stopped trying to carry every possible tool, and focused on an 80-20 rule what did I need 80% of the time or more? So I made up a tool roll for those tools that was much much lighter out of the legs of old blue jeans. I still have it. (see below)

I still brought the bucket with more tools in the rig adn woudl come back if a needed them. (since it was not uncommon that I didn't find what I wanted...) but I also brought a hand truck to carry it with some bungees for keeping it (or other parts), from falling off.

It may not be obvious, but the two at the extreme left are an Allen set, and a bezel tool for old ford control knob bezels. (That one should probably come out at this lat date...)

Outlaw, the handles on the junkyard bag is one long strap, overlapped and sewn together on bottom. I made the bag, stitched a really thick piece of craft leather to the very bottom of the bag, then sewed the handle strap through the leather and Cordova material. After that, I sewed the thinner, more pliable leather on the bottom as a scuff plate of sorts.

The handle loop straps stitched together partially for a good grip but when the bag is fully loaded, it's tough on the hands. Thinking back, I should have sewn in some windlace rubber for more comfortable handles but I never carry the bag farther than from the truck to the garden cart or wheelbarrow so its not too bad.

Hi Nines, I really like the bag and have a commercial one somewhat similar but likely not as durable.

A 6"-8" piece of PEX tubing split lengthwise, slipped over each handle and taped up might solve the issue of it hurting your hands. PEX makes a great handle on kayaks and canoes by simply running the bow/stern line through it and back to the tie on. Should work for your bag too.

ps. Upholstery looks great!

Pex is a great idea, thanks for posting!

I once mentioned long ago, a tale of a beast with two backs...Now I have photo evidence of it's existence...more to come at a later date.

hey,nine,

I've got that same 6" Craftsman thickness planer (open on one side). I haven't used it in (probably) over 30 years. Do those things have any monetary value?

Only for those of us that collect weird old tools. I pulled mine from outside under a tarp at a hoarder's estate sale. Only paid $15. Still need to restor it. It will become shelf art.

Lots of before pics.

He has door panels to be recovered that you will see later on.
img_2492.jpg

I'll be doing a headliner in material he supplied to match the seats.
img_2495.jpg

Rear panel to be recovered with black and tan to match seats. I also have to make a floor panel to cover the fuel tank that will be carpeted.
img_2496.jpg

Stripped down, I have to shorten the seat brackets that the builder spot welded in, they are too close to the transmission to allow a shift boot and the floor was not finished around the trans shift hole so I will be fabbing a plate for that area as well.
img_2497.jpg

Here I have to shorten and reroute the a/c vent hose over the column, fab a plate to cover holes in the driver floor board, I've already drilled and tapped holes for the armrests in the factory brackets and primed bare metal left by the builder. This also shows before the heat/sound barrier is installed in the doors.

Hood opener now:

Hood ornament centered by laser, contour gauge used to find exact contour, pilot holes drilled and about to open them up when I remembered to take a pic.

Customer mentioned his mirror not being able to adjust far enough in so I cut and sanded a shim out of scrap plastic to give him a few more degrees.

Hey, some of that stuff you're doing is not part of the Upholsterer's job. You supposed to be inside the car doing the work.

Hood release and ornament is ace. Nice work (like I'm surprised)
