and - no, go out and buy a drill press is the wrong answer = LOL

Here's the deal-

I have several 3/8" round wooden dowels I want put into a 2" x 2" x 8' piece of wood.

The problem is: I want to drill holes to put the dowels into the wood, and
I want them all exactly at the same angle.

But I don't have a drill press or know anyone that does ....

I have a replica set of NASCAR flags and was planning on putting them on the dowels (like mini flag poles) and mount the "mini flag poles" on the larger piece of wood.

Then I would be able to mount the wood on the wall inside the garage.

Originally, I was going to try to drill them all at the same angle, but figured if I could even drill them all straight down, I could mount the long piece of wood with some small "L" brackets, and bend them so the long piece of wood could be whatever angle I want to flags to actually hang from ...

But I need to drill all the holes exactly the same, or the flags will not be equally straight.

Open to suggestions

TIA

Get a piece of wood and drill a hole through it at the angle you want. Clamp that piece of wood on top of the piece of wood you'll be mounting the flags to. Drill through the first hole you drilled and into the flag base wood, using the first piece of wood like a drill bushing or drill guide block. A piece of aluminum or steel would be better than wood, but wood will work pretty well for several holes. You can also rig up an edge stop on the bottom of the drill guide so it sits the same distance from the edge of the flag base wood, if that's appropriate for the holes you want to drill. Then move the drill guide around to drill the other holes. If you are drilling 90 degrees to the surface and need to control depth, you can use some drill stop collars mounted to the drill bits, or just stack some smaller wood pieces onto the drill bit to make a stop.

I just saw this done for workbench holes.

It's just a v-block made from wood. Making the 'Vee' can be done by cutting angles on two pieces of wood and gluing them together to form the v.

Odd angles just require more entertainment making the proper jig.

Unfortunately this really sounds like a job for a drill press or better yet a milling machine. You sure none of your neighbors, co workers, etc have a drill press? If someone is to have a machine tool in their garage most likely it is going to be a drill press. Heck even go down to rockler or your local equivalent wood working store and ask to take one of their drill presses for a test drive. :D

If you were closer I would do it for you. I have a feeling shipping would be a PITA though.

EDIT, second thought. Somebody, somewhere makes a jig that clips onto a 2" wide piece of stock and has a drill chuck that pivots and locks solid. Let me dig and see if I can find it. It is like the craftsman one pictured above, but much more industrialized. I think it was designed for folks that build traditional style homes. :headscrat

If you have been needing a drill press, now would be the time to buy one. ;)

Just get two pieces of scrap 1x4 or 5/4x4 and screw them together to make a T. Centre and drill a hole(at whatever angle you choose) through the top portion of the T (as you see here <----). Then you can mark the centre of the bottom leg of the T, and lay it on its side, align it with the mark on your 2x2 and drill away. As long as you are somewhat careful they will all come out perfect. Definitely not a job you need a milling machine for, yes a drill press would be nice but if this is the extent it would see then 100% unnecessary as well.
