I am starting to see a trend where the cans now come with valves instead of requiring piercing.

It screwed me up when i told the customer to get some refrigerant oil and it showed up with a valve. It looked like it would work but didnt and ended up being a giant pain.

I only have professional equipment and have never seen anyone with ****** valve type tool. Most of the time people use the big jugs anyway.

Went to wally world and could not find any good old cans to be pierced, they all have valves. Are they suppose to be usable with pricing tool or was i doing it wrong?(maybe cranked on it too much )

Not trying to sound high and mighty but for rare times i have to use store bought ac stuff i dont want to have to resort and figure out how to use that "idiot proof diy bs tool" I dont even think its possible to even hook it up to a manifold...is it?

I just recently had to deal with this nonsense as well. Rather than buying all new can taps I got out the side piercing version. Squeezed it quickly and made sure the handles locked. No issues. Damn you EPA.

This has got nothing to do with the EPA. This is WallyMart and other retailers serving the non-mechanic consumer who doesn't own any A/C gauges and just wants to top off his car's system as cheaply as possible. Amazon and others still sell the conventional cans that can be side-pierced.

Yes it does

Small cans of non-exempt MVAC refrigerant (i.e., containers designed to hold two pounds or less of refrigerant) that have unique fittings, and, if manufactured or imported on or after January 1, 2018, have self-sealing valves, can continue to be sold to persons without certification for DIY use on their vehicles.

just need a $4 adapter from the local parts store. simple adapter that works just fine and allows hooking up to normal manifold hoses. there are probably higher quality brass ones available if you look but the cheap plastic one I picked up worked with no problems when I did the wifes enclave.
