It all started back in Jan 2004. I was looking for a retirement place. It had to have a garage/workshop. Any kind of house would do.

The first place I looked, was where I did my boating. At the time, I was driving 100km to the water.

This is the place I found. Big garage, small house. Island still in place, as were the three fuel tanks. It hadn't been used as a service station for 20 years.

I just couldn't make the right deal.

So, a month later and 6km down the road, I found this place.
It had been ten years since it had been a service station/variety store.
It, like the first one, was also vacant.

It's right on the edge of the village. The first place inside the village limits.

It even came with a house, a handy feature.

Yes, this is true. A year later, they sold the place, tanks removed, for what I had offered.
The time was just not right.

Everything worked out OK with this one and I took possession in March 2004.
I was not yet retired and still lived in the city and went to work during the week.
Come the weekend, I'd load some 'stuff' into the pickup and head south.

Summer 2005 and my 'city place sold and the company offered me $5k to leave.
I had four weeks vacation coming, so I left instantly.
I had a month to vacate the old place, so every other day I'd make the trip with a full pickup.
More than a few trips were made with this trailer.

At the same time as all this was going on I found a boat that I just had to have.
Here's some pics as I found it.

It was advertised as a '77 Wellcraft. Turns out, it wasn't

While searching for information on Holman Moody motors, I came across my very first forum.
So, not being very creative, I chose 'Noisy Nova' as a screen name. It stuck and has followed me everywhere.

In my very first post, I stated that I has a '77 Wellcraft with twin V-drives.
The first reply informed me that, no I didn't, as no such thing was made.
I was forced to take pictures, and learn how to post them.
It turns out that I have a 1969 Nova Marine, 24' Sprint. Only 124 were made.

The trailer under the Nova was a POS, but the trailer under the Trojan was good. So I sold the Trojan without a trailer, Moved the Nova to the Trojan's trailer and gave the Nova's trailer to the guy that bought the Trojan.

The A-Frame crane and the Giant engine hoist were pressed into service.

This is the service bay, it's 25' x 14'. A 8.5' x 6.5' opening was cut into the back wall when the addition was added to the back of the garage.

180,000 BTU furnace would heat this space with the door open.

This is the crane that was green and holding the boat in a previous pic. I shortened it by one foot and erected it inside.

I framed in the large opening in the end of the bay and installed two doors that were given to me.

This allowed me to heat just the back room by itself.

No, the son of the of the origional owner of the garage wanted it.
He was putting together a display for his father.
It no longer worked and I didn't have time to mess with it.

I replaced the big furnace in the service bay with a used direct vent Olsen ($100).

But I'm more sensitive about that than most.

That's a great shop. Love the boat, too.

I must admit, I didn't look, just guessed.

In the workshop, you can see the area that has no wallboard on the ceiling.
There was a wall here, and in that room there was some wooden shelves and, where the wood stove sits, there was a air compressor.

I moved the air compressor to where the blast booth now sits.

When I got the blast booth, the compressor was moved yet again!

It now sits just inside the side door. The space was made to measure.

Summer '09.
The workshop was almost impossible to heat. Something had to be done.
So, dig down to the slab and insulate. These are insulated panels that are cut out of doors prior to installing a window. These particular ones are fiberglass clad.

The old windows had to go as well. New sills were installed.

Moving to the inside. If ya gotta move the bench, ya might as well paint the walls.

Windows installed. Center one is fixed. The other two swing out.

Ready for winter.

Here's something else I did last summer.

Everyone probable knows by now that I have no extra money for the garage projects.
They just kinda happen as things come together. Planets aligning and all that.

One day, when moving my welding machine, I caught the door edge with the cart and tore the door off. Apologies for not having pics of the offending door.

Previously, I had been given a nice 3' wide solid core door.
The wall between the garage and what was the variety store is 4" block.

I removed the old wood frame, cut the opening wider and installed a metal frame.

Nice job.
Reminded me a lot of a garage I built in New England. The first heater that you showed was almost a duplicate of the one that I got ( real cheap ) and hung as you had. It would either be too hot when it was on or too cold when it wasn't.
Also we heated the house with a wood stove and the pictures of your split and stacked wood is one that I hope never to be included with again.

Here's another little garage project.

This wood wall with a door was originally the ladies restroom. It was turned into the furnace room for the variety store. The wall was initially filled with sawdust, but most of it had leaked out.

Here I've removed the furnace room celing and interior wall.

If I had known how to lay block...but now I do.

Now, about that old furnace with it's B-vent chimney.
When the gas guy came to reconnect gas to the garage, he held his hand over his eyes and said, "if I could see that there was a B-vent chimney, I'd have to tag this furnace out."

So a few months later the wind blew it down. A sure sign that a new furnace was in order.
I picked up a used mid-efficiency, powered vent furnace. Free.
Same brand as the one in the garage side.

Alas, no more central air. Maybe down the line.

The guy that has never made any mistakes, has probably never made anything.

What are you using to hold that insulation board to the block wall? You may have said but I can't find it.

I don't think I said either.
There's two concrete screws per panel with foam on the backside and joints.
The panels were 22" x 32".

The garage looks great. Painting the interior walls white was a great improvement. Lighting the place will be easier because of the reflectivity. The ability to retrofit "found" objects (doors, furnace, etc.) make this a more affordable project. Learning new skills along the way is a bonus!

Awesome garage/shop. Just picked up a 6'x12" 3door metal cabinet for free so I can see we are of the same ilk. Love the old workbench in the back room (green legs w/ 3 drawers) . BTW nice house you got also
