Anything to report, fuel consumption wise, as a result of your energy conservation upgrades?

Well, before the insulation was added to the block walls, the blocks tended to stay at the outdoor temperature.
So the stove would heat the air, but as soon as you left for the day, the temperature would immediately plummet.
Also, the ingress of outside air, was unimpeded by the old windows.

Now, once the block is warmed up, it'll stay quite a bit warmer than outside for several days.

The new air tight stove helps a lot. With the old coal burner, you couldn't chuck wood into it fast enough.

Here's some more.

There was a pre existing 8" hole in the wall.

So I removed the insulation that filled the hole and stuck in a piece of 8" duct.

On the inside, I built a small paint booth. There's a 7" fan attached to the backside.

Later on, I installed a proper hooded vent.

The latest project.

See that little window there, on the South side of the garage?

From the inside, it's in a little 5'x6' room.

The floor is rotten and caving in.

There's a hole, in the ceiling, to access a storage area.

To the right, there's a washroom.

Nice retirement hobby you have in restoring an old garage!
Wondering what your going to do with the store part of the garage?
Maybe open it up for parking that future showcar?

That takes us up to date. Now I have to work getting the ceiling of the washroom down.
The vent and waste pipes are copper!

I'm still thinkin' about that.

The floor in the store part consists of two layers of half inch plywood sitting on 2x6's.

The 2x6's sit directly on the concrete base.

This base is about seven inches below grade and fills up with water every spring. As a result, it's quite rotten and has to come out. A task I'm not looking forward to.

I'm going to have to compare the cost of a wood floor vs concrete.

Either way, a new floor will sit on 3 1/2" of foam insulation.
Then either 4" concrete or 2x4's & 5/8th ply.

A concrete floor will open up the possibilities for the space.

I an so slack. I completely forgot to upload the latest progress. So here goes.

So here is what has happened over the years. Sometime ago, the county raised the road. So the garage owner was forced to raise the level of the parking lot. The pavement trapped water and rotted the block.

You can see where they raised the door and placed a new concrete threshold. This was covered with asphalt.

The old garage has other problems as well. Walls are coming apart and the roof has multiple leaks.

DSC_0940Large_zpsa0692a6f.jpg

I'm looking into the possibility of replacing the walls with 2x6s and the roof with trusses and steel.

Also looking at building a completely new garage behind the old one and paving over the old one.

Damn! Nice progress. You may have mentioned it before and I just missed it, but what siding material are you thinking on covering the exterior insulation out back?

Thanks Arron, Denwood and vr4joe. I'm very excited.

Joe, I'm thinking of continuing the cladding of the rest of the garage with the insulating panels then vertical siding.
I want to install the same siding on the house to make them look like a matched pair.

I've also acquired a garage (boathouse) for the Noisy Nova. I hope to have the Nova in the water next year.

That's a bad *** bench looks like 4" thick.......looking good... did u have epdm rubber roof put on??.

I have no idea what they put on the roof. They hot mopped a layer then flame sealed a top layer. It no longer rains on the inside, :).

The bench is 30" by 10'6" and is 3 1/4" thick. The 3 legs are cast iron. It's very heavy, ;).

I've been sidetracked lately doing house renovations.

Mega garage project. Props to you for the transformation. I recall reading the original thread years ago when you'd just found the place, so it was a real treat to see this thread back on the front page of the forum with an update. Great work!

Pulled the old ceiling down, hung some temp lights & removed the last of the '40's wiring.
