Hello to all from the mother in law. She moved in with us back in August, 92 years old, still standing upright, no cane, no walker, cannot hear, cannot see but still breathing and wants to go outside and get some sun, we did not have a winter this year in California and all through Nov. and Dec. it was 70 and 80 degrees. She took a header off my two steps into the garage about two weeks ago, she was intrigued with all of the stuff in there, she must have thought it was a closet or a jewelery box. Anyhow, I had to build a ramp out of the front door so she could access outside and get some sun and stroke the cat. I need to know from all that are experienced what kind of exterior coating would be best for applying to my plywood so it is non-skid or rubberized with a sand slurry additive or other. The great grandson came over with a skateboard and said grip tape would be good, but that !*@# would break me, and surely would outlive her. Chime in and give me your thoughts. I don't want no spray on stuff, just something simple that I can get at town.... Thanks

If you look in this thread about a truck bed slide you will see an example of what I've used. It's a can of Rustoleum truck bed liner with a bag of Valspar nonskid mixed in. I've used it on my truck bed slide, truck cap shelving and on some walk ways on my boat trailer. I got both the bedliner and nonskid grit from Lowe's in additon to a disposable trim roller kit. I've mixed in the whole bag of nonskid which is about 3-4 times the ratio the instruction on the bag of nonskid says. It has worked out pretty well. I added the nonskid after I did my boat trailer walkways with just the bedliner. I didn't find straight bedliner to be very slip resistant.

When I built my Mom's wheelchair ramp I used a roll of roofing material like shingles are made out of. Dark brown color and has held up well for nearly ten years.

The best thing you can use for this application is aircraft wing walk compound. It's a type of paint that is rolled on. It sticks to pert near anything and stays where you put it. It has a heavy grit texture perfect for a wheelchair ramp. Check you local aircraft paint distributors. I have used wing walk on wood trailer decks, wood stairs, and platforms.
