Today the excavator put the road in in front of the shop area and got most of the excavation done on the foundation. They worked fast. It's been dry for a week, so we got lucky and didn't have to deal with any mud or mess. I'm hoping the weather holds out for the concrete.

That will be a big one! Only one overhead door?

Initially, yes. It'll be a 16x14 slider. Long term I'll put another door on the side. I'm using glulam all the way along endwalls so I can open up any bay.

I had to subscribe to this one to hopefully catch more glimpses of the AR 110 in the background. :D

Here it is before I pushed it out of the way so it didn't get squashed. '53 R-110 1/2 ton long bed. Has "Atomic Energy Commission" printed on the doors, but it's barely visible. Hopefully it's no longer radioactive!

That's what's the barn/shop is for...a final resting place for these and other old trucks.

Hey that's not fair - you've got 2 of them! :(

So are they the start of your collection, or are there others lurking about?

I love old trucks (unfortunately though I live in suburbia, so I don't really have the space for any at present), large or small, restored or patina, there all good - and in my opinion, the R 110s (& AR 110s) are one of the best looking little trucks on the planet.

Sorry, I just didn't think when I referred to it as an "AR" - I could be wrong, but I think that the "A" probably refers to Australian build - they were badged as "AR" here up to about the "AR 160" size, then the big ones of the same era were just "R" - as in "R190" and "R 200" (but they didn't change in appearance much from the "L" series).

Don't quote me though - I'm no expert, I'm just old enough to remember them (but not old enough to not remember them).

I've got this '57 also.

I have more Fords and Chevys, but those aren't as interesting as these old "binders". My dad and I started that short-bed '53 the other day and it runs perfectly. Kind of surprised us because it started instantly and was really quiet because the exhaust system was in good shape. We both looked at each other thinking the starter stuck or something, but it was just idling. The clutch fork is broken, which is probably why they stopped driving it. Then it sat for 25 years outside and some tweakers stole the radiator and smashed the windows.

I'd like to find more of these binders...maybe trade off some of my ford/chevy collection. The internationals seem better built and have a lot of nice thought out features. The one we've discovered recently is the cab floor bottom seems to unbolt from the cab. That's going to make repairing the floor so much easier than working with it in the cab.

Forms are in, rebar is in, inspection is done. The only thing missing is concrete trucks full of concrete! My concrete guys keep getting bumped from larger commercial jobs, so we wait. Maybe next week?

Your concrete guy must do a lot of BIG jobs if that one is getting bumped!

Sorry, I meant concrete guy's spot in line for the concrete keeps getting bumped due to large commercial pours.

Care to share what concrete is running a yard? It seems like it can vary greatly depending on the location. I'm just curious.

I think my guy said $117/yd. This was ~103 yd pour. I've got $35K into this 60x60 rock for permits, excavating, and concrete.

Some high and low spots obvious when it rained. No too bad overall, maybe a 1/2" difference from high to low.

I don't know how I would build this without the forklift. Each rafter is about 200lbs. And those big glulams are probably 600lbs.

SF: i didn't notice your thread when you first started and maybe because i used to try and stay out of this area of GJ to protect my bank account. now i'm venturing in and re learning some of my skills and learning new ones so going to watch your build because i really like the size.

what are your plans for the insides if you don't mind sharing? just to store cool old trucks and work on them or do you need to house animals in the winter in part of it?

nice work so far and looks like upper end quality. are you the GC or did you get a bid from a guy to do the entire project? how much and does it include insulation, electrical and anything not included?

cheers

Initially just to store old vehicles. I hate to see them sit out in the rain come winter. No animals.

I'm the GC. I hired out the concrete, but it looks like I'm doing everything else. I tried to get some bids but I get tired of bugging contractors to get back to me. When you get outside the cookie-cutter pole barn mold, you options are limited. I'm not insulating. I'm using 2x8 tongue&grove sheeting and 1x12 board and bat, so I'll have a solid 2-1/2" of wood on the exterior. From the inside, you'll see the tongue&grove. No electrical, initially. The long-term plan is solar PV + tesla battery packs.

SF: thanks for answering all my questions. sounds great and i'll make some popcorn and sit back and just watch you post more pictures and tell your story.

I like a lot of the information I've read about the Tesla and i hope they get it to where it really makes sense to own and use them. do you own one or do you know anybody that does?

cheers

I don't own a tesla but I do own a golf-e. I had a chance to drive a tesla and it was pretty much awesome. The golf-e is fun also and looks like a normal car. I leased the golf-e for 3 years because I'm expecting EV range to 2x in three years and I'll want to upgrade.

Went to pick up the sheathing yesterday from the mill and we blew a right front on my friends truck. That was scary, but he was able to get us stopped and off the road. 2 hrs later, we picked up 400 2x8x16 tongue&groove sticks.

My dad and daughter put up 2/3 of the wall today. It looks great from the inside.

SF: your friend's truck looks like it could be in a parade. how in the heck did it blow a tire?

i have to tell you that is one of the nicest framing jobs I've seen and i sold new homes for the last 20 years of my 30 years of selling Real Estate. which mill are you getting your wood at?

keep the pictures coming because so far i and i'm sure others probably like it as much as you do.

good luck

Don't know why the tire blew. I'm just glad I didn't have my arm hanging out the window when it blew. It tore a big hole in his fiberglass fender. The hood and fenders are one piece, so he wasn't too happy about the hole. He restored the truck but recently he's been putting it to real work. I think it's a '74 (Kenworth).

The 2x8x16 tongue&groove came from a mill down in Drain Oregon. The glulams came from rosboro which is in Springfield Oregon. The post and beams came from a couple different mills around Oregon. All the post and beams are #1 or better FOHC, and it seems half of them are select. I look down each 4x10 rafter to put the crown up but there is no crown! Crazy nice wood. Makes it easy to build with.

This is new to me, but I don't know how I'd build without it:
