SF: don't be shy posting pictures because the wood and the craftsmanship are amazing. do you own the fork lift or are you just renting it?

keep up the great work and what a great summer to be building a garage.

cheers

SF: You sir are making one of the nicest garages or barns on GJ. is the roof you just put on 2 x 6's tongue and groove? looks awesome and ask questions if you have any or we'll just sit in our chairs and enjoy the pictures.

Nice work, is it going to have a higher "barn style" roof in the centre?

Yes, it'll be a monitor style barn with a raised center. There is a short 5' wall that sits on the higher glulam beam and then trusses sit on top of that.

Thanks for the compliments! Roof sheathing is same as the walls: 2x8 tongue and groove. It's amazing how much shrinkage there is in those boards. I'm putting them up green and making the seam as tight as I can get it. After a week or so the gap is nearly 1/4".

SF: very easy to compliment because you not only have been using very high quality materials you are doing a great job. also nice placement having the tree there to frame in your new building. it looks like it needs some trimming, but i'm guessing it can be a very nice tree down the road.

i know the 1/4 inch shouldn't be a huge deal on the roof because you are putting roofing material over it. BTW what type roofing material did you choose? but on the sides are you planning on caulking the gaps or do tell?

thanks and I (we) are really enjoying your pictures and progress. are you doing most of the work yourself and getting help from friends and family as they can?

Metal roofing, but I haven't settled on style. On the sides, I was planning on putting vertical board and batt. A local mill can supply a true 1x12x24 board and 1x4x24 batt in doug fir. Vision is something like this:

SF: well you have my approval on that style of exterior. the interior is going to look pretty sweet with all the wood you are installing too.

also thanks for the link to the barns and houses. I might have to spend a few hours dreaming of owning one of them one day.

Did you start out with a budget in mind or an idea what this project is going to cost? or are you just building it as you want it and finding out the damage later?

i'm guessing you could take lots of pictures and post daily and you wouldn't have one complaint from us.

thanks for sharing

Put up one of the pony walls today. Built it in three sections and lifted each section with the forklift. Seven windows up high, on both sides.

SF: awesome progress and pictures as per the usual. thanks for taking the time to take them and then post for us.

did you nail the pony wall down into the glue lam or bolt it? or tell me how you secured it?

will your fork lift go high enough to put tresses up on top of the pony walls or are you having a company build the tresses and bring their crane to set them in place? or are you building the tresses or roof supports?

i'm really liking your build and hope it's not wearing you out.

good luck and thanks again.

The pony wall bottom plate attaches to the tops of the lower rafters, which sit on the glulam. I'm going to use a 2x12 to tie the glulam, bottom plate of pony wall, and ends of rafters. I try to remember to post a picture when that's done.

I'll have crane truck land trusses on top of top plate of pony walls.

I don't know how I missed this. I'm a few miles north of you near the Enchanted Forest. What a great looking start of a building.

SF: trimming the trees can probably wait until February or spring and hopefully they will survive. if they don't the garage you are building can stand out on it's own because you are making a show piece. if you have time to take and post more pictures please do because i know there are lots of lookers out there that are not posting.

good luck on having everything ready for the tresses and it looks like the weather is still sunny and dry which i hope remains the same until your roof is on.

good luck

Rear wall in. Those 4x8x20 studs look like toothpicks in the picture. Used the green forklift to raise the wall. Did it by myself over two days. Building front wall today as soon as Parr lumber makes a visit.

SF: nice work as per usual. just a quick question is the 2 x 4 bracing just temporary until you get the tresses up and roof on?

looks great.

Yes, 2x4s are temporary. I could probably take most of them down now. Just too lazy.

WOW! Nice! sfeldma...you're building this yourself?!?!?!

Yes, building it myself with helpers. I've had a bunch of help from Dad and neighbors and wife and daughter and daughter's friends. The engineer that drew up the plans even helped one morning.

Looking good. My neighbor is planning to get into the hard cider business and wants me to build a monitor style barn for him. He's looking at a kit from Costco that he feels will be most cost effective. Did you look into any kits ?

Everyday I work on this building, I wonder why I just didn't have a pole barn built! I did look into pole barns, as a kit or kit+install. And then I looked into getting a steel building kit or kit+install. I considered conventional stick frame build. But in the end, I choose the most difficult path. I didn't know about the Costco route. Is that a pole barn?

2 Towns Ciderhouse is about 2 miles from my shop/barn.

SF: I've never seen a kit or pole built building anywhere near as nice as the one you are building. i might consider doing a steel frame one if the budget allows i might go that route, but your build is really appealing to me.

keep up the great work

Really coming along nicely. Are you working on this full time or as time is available? Either way it is an ambitious project. The way you are building it someone will be using it 500 years from now. Keep at it.
