Try wrapping a plastic grocery bag around the magnet, then sweep up the grindings, peel off the bag and throw the grindings away.

Floor nozzle on the shop vac takes care of them for me.

I have been asking for YEARS for a brass magnet so I would have an easier time picking up empty cases at the range.

It's also great fun to bring into an appliance store where they sell, (ahem), "stainless steel" appliances. If it sticks, it ain't stainless!
Works great for finding bondo on used cars as well!
Not all stainless steel is non-magnetic.

I've hit stainless fasteners that are slightly magnetic... I cut one in half to find it had a slug of steel inside... REALLY??? it has to be costly to do that process... is there really a savings by slugging the inside of stainless fasteners?
One way to get into a good argument is to tell someone who thinks they know everything about metal... some stainless is magnetic. They go all you don't know **** on you. It's fun.

This is true. Another possibility with appliances is that there is a piece of steel directly behind the stainless sheet. That is done with a lot of modern stainless refrigerators, because people like to stick magnets to them. And it is done in appliances, where the cheaper steel structure supports a more expensive stainless exterior.
Then there's the VCM steel appliances that have a stainless look, but aren't stainless.

Generally, you will find that the 300 series stainless steels (highly-corrosion resistant) are non-magnetic. The 400 series and other hardenable types of stainless, will oxidize. That's why you will see some pistol parts begin to rust where they come into contact with perspiration, these are magnetic.
