There's a local hydraulic shop that I go to on occasion for misc parts. They have a hydraulic tapping arm that will do ~2.5" with ease. Extremely impressive to watch as it goes through like nothing.

I'm more impressed that he slit that in one shot. Got to love a job shop where old technology is the best way to get it done.

I'll have to check how large it goes when I get home but I have a pretty large tap handle as well that I got at auction some time ago. It's maybe 22" long? I don't know that it's quite that beefy but it's bigger than I'll probably ever need!

Years ago, I had to thread 1 1/2" rods, must have done 12" on each one and did it by hand, that was a workout! I think there were 6 rods, but they were galvanized and welded in a "u" shape, so you couldn't put them in a lathe.
