Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

This cabinet was made by Browne and Morse in Muskegon Mich. The company was founded by someone who left Shaw Walker to make his own office furniture. They were contracted by the US government to make these for submarines and LST's in WWII. I like the fact that the drawers have a latch that prevents them from opening. Definitely rusty on the bottom and it's entirely welded components make this cabinet over 250lbs. I added the steel castors.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Side door to the garage is only about 12" from the back wall, so I had a sort of dead space behind it. Decided to use it for small pieces storage.

4 Akro Mils 30636's (sprayed safety blue to match my other cabinets), 72 30220's, 24 30230's, and 12 30224's. Left some room to grow, wasn't sure exactly how many bins I could mount per row. I could have gotten another three rows in if I separated each wall panel by a couple of inches. Oh well.

I got 2 sets like these from the local 'auto' retailer when they were on sale. Felt so guilty spending that much money but it was so worth it.

For the rest I use similar style plastic parts organizer trays. I have a few that are double the depth which is great for bearings, seals and other chunkier bits. Would love something with a pull-out drawer/tray like the metal ones above. May have to make some one day.

The guy that used to own my house and garage made these drawers:

A 2nd one:

Then I got these from the gf's grandfathers shop (he passed 2 decades ago):

and some more drawers that were here when I bought the place, now partially hidden behind my clutter. They even have the random stuff in them:

Time to organize it all soon.

That's extremely nice! Wide drawers and storage, open it up and bam! it's all laid out before you.

An equipto I dug out of storage. Whoever put it in crushed the bottom picking it up fully loaded with a forklift. I wish I could find some spare drawers. Heck I wish I could find another one just like it.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I built all these storage racks using found lumber and HF bins. Super cheap, but lots of time spent milling scrap wood...Pick your currency, ha ha!

To make finding the right piece of hardware a little easier, I made a few dump trays that I use to sift thru and find the bolts and nuts I need.

The red and grey racks are about 10 years old, the unfinished ones I built a couple of weekends ago.

(Of course, the whole time I was building the new trays, I was haunted by the thought that I was spending time building storage for stuff that most people throw away.....)

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Got this at an auction a few years back... Paid 50 dollars for it and think it was worth every penny.

right when I got it and in the middle of painting drawers.

And now... Never got around to sanding and painting the rest of the drawers... But it kinda looks cool half finished. I have lug nuts, spark plugs, nuts and bolts, washers, and alot of other miscellaneous things. Probably still haven't used half of the drawers. Came with 2 full drawers of dividers. I have to find/ or make some labels to slide in the slots.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Although not as attractive as many of the posts, mine meets the "cheap as dirt" cost that I love. Thirty years or so ago one of my friends that worked in a retail store had some metal store fixtures that were being junked, I latched on to several. Move ahead to a couple of years ago and at a garage sale a guy had a pickup load (a Ford Courier to be exact) of drawers, two basic sizes and the whole load delivered was $10. I've given away more of them than I have used. I added a couple of stiffing braces to hold the weight and now have a functional storage area for lots of fasteners. One picture would not load, but this will give you an idea of what I have

I purchased a similar unit with hardware in it. Makes life so much more pleasant. Don't have to empty coffee cans or run to the hardware store whenever I need a bolt.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I've posted these before but...

Got this at Costco and hated that it let SO much dust collect in the storage bins so I used self drilling screws and plywood I had laying around. Then 1x2 bats to give it the look of a cabinet.

Now it's painted gray and looks like this:

Then, I found these on craigslist for FREE!!!

Now they're gray too and filled with assorted Plano boxes and plastic organizers as you can see. I intend to put doors on the front to keep the dust out (I live very close to a freeway)

Yes, I finished painting them finally. Just didn't take a new picture.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I use these Plano tackle boxes at work. they hold up real well. I like that the hinges and the latches are not just pieces of plastic that bend like the cheap ones. I've had most of these for over 7 years and the latches still work. i have my supplies divided by job. wood, metal, electrical, fuses etc. I try to limit the back and forth to my tool boxes. I take whatever box I need for that job with me. I have a few small ones for drill bits and bits for my screw gun. they fit nice in my tool bag. I also use these rubbermaid containers for the large stuff.

Yep, thats where I got mine. Jiffy Lube oil change shop.
I got the idea from "pintrest", but they used gallon jugs. I figured I'm not a hardware store & I didnt need to stock a "jug" of 1/4" nuts. Just 20-40 would do. Also, before I trash something, I take most or all the screws & bolts out to save them.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I use the Stanley (or Mastercraft/Canadian Tire Brand) storage bins. The bins are removable and adjustable - so you can have a mixture of small, medium and large. I welded-up a quick storage bin with plywood shelves so the bins can be organized. I took the extra time on the Metric bin to label them. It's sometimes harder to tell a 5mm or 6mm bolt/nut compared to imperial.

You can take the entire case to the project or just the small bin or two you need.

For some of the bins with random assortments - I took a photo of the entire bin - and have a flip-card by the bins so I can quickly look to see what bin something random is in.

The rack has a plywood top so I can open-up a bin on top. These things are very durable and allows you to sort very well (as you can tell by the number of them).

I too, hate going to the hardware store if I need a nut, bolt or screw.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Ours are just in plastic boxes from other projects and "found" storage items. I have never come across a good find on a metal chest of small drawers. Once I do, it will be in the shop.

For production stuff we use the boxes the screws and nuts came in from our distributor, tear the tops off, and pack them into boxes from our laser cutter. Our laser cutter delivers parts in some seriously bulletproof cardboard boxes. Makes an easy open-top kit-assebly friendly box, but doesn't keep metal shavings and dust out.

Sorry, no pics :dunno:

I use the big metal coffee cans.I wrap 3" tape around it.I write down with a Sharpie what is in the can.1/2 Bolt,7/16 Nut etc..I then wrap a clear piece of 3" packing tape around the masking tape so it don't get trashed.

The main reason I dug out the eqiupto was to take some weight out of the round one so it could spin again. I'm this close to just chucking my random collection of someone elses home made L brackets and non functioning water valves.

Neat, I guess I'll get to measuring

I use large and small tins,

Mine are a bit more classy tho ... I use a stickon label as well,

... and then wrap clear tape over it .. ..

Between my caffeine addiction, and the amount of tinned food, the dogs eat - Ive got a bunch of "free", "storage" containers ..

+1 on these and my supplier has them in double the depth of the ones pictured(tho not Stanley branded) so they will take bulkier items. Though they get a little heavy once you fill them with bearings or large bolts. A good shelving unit like you made is critical once you get a few as stacking them on top of each other is a pain to get at the bottom one. Plus if you drop and shat the case you end up with a big mess to clean up.

I picked this up from the local Building Salvage shop. I want to give it a light resto … hammer out the dents, strip it down and give it a new coat of paint.

In the meantime, I've been collecting lots of jars that fit those drawers pretty well.
