Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Here is what I scored. I had many other cabinets like on this thread until I saw this. Addressograph card cabinet. 133 drawers, roll up doors, 6' tall, 4' wide, 2' deep. Holds almost everything. Big stuff is a little problem.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I recently got the big metal cabinet at an auction for $60. Presently filling that with assorted hardware. I keep my nuts and bolts in the wooden cabinet that my dad and I made 15+ years ago. Each horizontal row is a different size. I have 1/4" through 3/4" and the last row is just larger stuff that I don't have in large quantities.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I use 1/2 gallon plastic juice containers that I cut to a uniform size with the table saw. Very similar to using oil jugs. Cutting them with the saw seems safer to me than using a utility knife.

Built a wooden frame with a plywood bottom to act as a drawer. Then used angle iron for drawer slides.

Food for thought... If you are really cramped for space, remember that round containers (PB jars, coffee cans, etc) are not the most efficient use of space. You would be better off with square or rectangular containers to fill the shelf / drawer space more efficiently.

I'm also big on using uniformly sized containers for some reason. :)

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Mattlt - I use juice bottles too. I used to cut them down on my table saw but I still had to trim them slightly due to the rough edge that was left by the saw blade. Another GJ member (sorry I can't remember his name) came up with a simple jig made out of wood and a box cutter blade.

I don't have a picture of the jig but I just screwed 2 short (about 6") pieces of 2"x4" together to form a right angle. I set the length of 1 piece at 4" being the height that I cut the bottles down to. I then screwed the blade to the end face of the 2"x4" so that the blade is in a position to cut the bottle. It's fast, accurate and safe.

When I cut PVC pipe on the table saw, I turn the blade backwards. Makes the smoothest cut you've ever seen.

Dunno how it would work with a plastic bottle, but I like your storage and might try it myself....

I've been told that you can use a book and a razor blade to make the cuts as well. Place the razor blade on a specific page next to the spine (sharp end facing away from the spine and exposed) and rotate the plastic container against it. It should cut the plastic bottle the same height all the way around.

After years of blowing sawdust out of the bins, I decided to put this harbor freight rrack in a sliding enclosure.

For some of the bins with random assortments - I took a photo of the entire bin - and have a flip-card by the bins so I can quickly look to see what bin something random is in.
It's obvious now that you've said it :lol_hitti
Seriously, for me this is the best idea I have ever gotten from here  THANKS!

I use the Stanley (or Mastercraft/Canadian Tire Brand) storage bins. The bins are removable and adjustable - so you can have a mixture of small, medium and large. ...

Thanks for using Stanley storage bins, I love the setup! There are some cool (and creative) cabinets and organizers in here. Here’s one of my favorites an auto dealership is using.

I have that same cabinet, the small blue electrical boxes work great for small parts, just need to trim a little off the top and there only .18 each.

After YEARS of storing hardware I feel this is the best and fastest way to organize and find hardware. I'm up to 10 draws and it just amazing how easy it works.

I have some software that I use for lots of filing stuff that also works pretty well for the various bins, etc. I use for my aircraft and normal hardware, electrical stuff, etc. - it's called "Paper Tiger" and can be changed on the run if you want to move stuff around, uses keywords (like "#6 Dzus buttons") for quick searches.

I like the stack-on stuff for whatever reason. Probably because it's cheap and fairly durable. Sometimes I find their stuff on clearance but usually only those horizontal boxes but those don't really "stack" that well.

I have a friend who works part time at Ace Hardware. All of their nuts and screws come in a variety of small cardboard boxes. After filling their inventory, he would give the boxes to me. If you don't know anyone, it wouldn't hurt to ask.

The Parkrose hardware store in Vancouver had these slide racks. Lots of small parts and you could see what you were getting.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I have something like that on top of my main bench. I use it for all the kinds of little miscellaneous stuff you want to have on hand. Nice to have the little drawers that way so it doesn't become one big junk drawer (alhtough I'll admit, I've got a junk drawer, too). I had to cut one whole row out of the thing to make it fit, which was a bummer. But it comes in handy.

marty_p is right, the index card type can often be had for next to nothing, where the industrial ones still command high prices.
That is a very good looking area. Have the rest of your garage pics elsewhere here?

Another small cabinet that I cleaned up. Missing one drawer but it will be a good cubby hole for a Plano box for small parts.
