Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Have you been saving them for a while?

No. I have two drawer units I acquired within the last month for free. I got the idea about the oil containers here. At work we have an auto shop that maintains several hundred vehicles/equipment. I asked the techs to not throw the empty containers in the recycling bin. I made them a special bin in our Carpenter shop to put them into. Every day or so I go and retrieve the containers and take them back to my shop to process.

Depending on the week I get a steady supply of 10 to 40. In the next few days I hope to post here the two storage units showing the oil container bins.

What ever you paid, that unit is sweet. I love acquiring vintage items that has a great story behind it. Makes it worth more to me personally. Great buy!

I feel the same way. I always like a good story.... Even though as I acquire more vintage tools a lot of the time it's from an old timer that is a mechanic or wood worker or some type of engineer that is down sizing or getting rid of their tools cause their back or hands and can't use them anymore... It's kind of dark when you think about that.. if this tool lasts until I have no use for it and I don't have someone to pass it down too then I'll be selling it to someone else...
Such is life.

Wow, that is REALLY nice. I love it.

What did you pay?

Hey thanks.

I paid $25 if my wife asks you.... but between us It was $250

Still, that's a decent/fair price for something like that. It looks to be in great shape. Stuff like this holds its value well.

I would think that they would use bulk containers if they go through that much. Lucky for you though. That would take me a while to get that many. They are rugged, free, and virtually indestructible.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

For those cutting oil bottles. The table saw works wonders. Lots easier than a cutter.

X2 on this.

I save mine from oil changes, put them in an old milk crate pointed down (without the lid) and set the whole crate on top of the oil change pan. When the crate gets full I set a stop on the table saw or miter box and chop them down. Then you just have to wipe them out.

Note that if you store multiple lengths of bolts in the same drawer you need a few cut lengthwise to sort with. I've also got some old antifreeze bottles cut lengthwise. Great to sort stuff in.

It's just a testament of how things were made, the great quality & workmanship that went into these items. They'll last forever.

Still excellent unit for what you paid. You'll never find that quality build in a new one for close to that amount of money.

Here is my project for "Nut & Bolt Storage". Have to paint it until I find a nice place for it in the garage. What to keep the gray color or maybe red? Feel free to give suggestions

All you people with the really big card index files really make me jealous that I can't find one >:C

The only time I've seen them is when my University was doing a liquidation auction and had a few of the wooden ones for $50 but someone snatched them up before I had gotten there.

Here are my hardware bins. The best $5000 at auction I ever spent. They are in the process of getting organized since moving into the new shop.

I found this index card cabinet at an antique flea market for $80. It was grey and rusty, but a little paint made it look new again. I stole the organizer idea from another member here from another hardware organization thread. They are deep receptacle boxes from HD that fit perfectly in the drawers once the tabs are clipped off.

Pardon the mess, this is still a work in progress.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Some of you guys have tons of fasteners in stock. The nuts and bolts alone must cost plenty more than the cabinates.
I have a 4 or 5 portable Harbor Freight parts storage. That is it. I often find what I need but if not there is a hardware store and a FastenAll with in 2 miles. Most of my fasteners in Stock are used from scrapped machines/cars or fasteners I acquired dirt cheap at yard sales. I generally only buy what I need(plus a bit extra for wiggle room) per project.

Always get those few extra nuts or washers. Nothing like buying the exact amount and having one fall in the trash can or roll into the floor drain. I've been there! I live 2 miles from an Ace hardware, and if it's too late, even Walmart sells little packs of nuts and bolts up to 3/8" I think.

I'm trying to get my dad to organize his massive nuts/bolts/screws/junk collection to something better than boxes and coffee cans. I never want to end up with that much hardware. I use one of those 39 bin plastic things that hang on the wall, and if I fill that up then I'm buying too much extra.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I started using bolts as a search argument and stumbled on a plumbing supply house changing hardware suppliers. Seventeen units with 6 drawers each for $125 including hardware in the drawers. When I mentioned that the hardware was all lag bolts and carriage bolts which I really don't use that much. He said he had 15 boxes of new grade 5 bolts I could have for an additional $100. Then said if I took the units and cap bolts he would throw in 13 more boxes of carriage bolts. Needless to say I agreed. When I build the new shop you can believe I will use them at every opportunity.
I think I am going to build an island work bench with the nut and bolts cabinet underneath. Sliding doors would keep them out of sight and clean.

Ive been lugging around this old 77 drawer military cabinet for years but can't imagine what I would do without it. It's big and heavy and serves as a support to an 8 ft island bench...

I havent bought any in a while, but TSC still sells by the pound. I have another local True Value that still sells by the pound as well.

I wish I had a cabinet like some of these. I just picked up 9 of the HF plastic bins. Have to make a box to hold them all yet. Around here, card catalogs go for $900+.

Because of the age of this thread, many photos are no longer able to be seen........

I use the 99 cents "shoeboxes" from Walmart. I put a label on the end of the container for the sizes. 1/4" 5/16" 7/16" 1/2" etc. I have small plastic bottles that contain the nuts and one for the washers and one for the fine thread versions.

Easy-peezy for my OCD.

I've sorted mine by fastener and size and keep them in compartmented storage boxes like the one's they sell at sporting goods stores for fishing tackle.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Based on a thread I found on GJ a couple of years ago (I can't seem to find it at the moment...), I built my hardware and small parts organizer using the Harbor Freight medium parts cases.

Yk0YCp1.jpg

Mine holds 46 cases, based on the largest carcass I could build using a single sheet of 3/4" plywood. Shelves are made of 1/2" plywood and joined to the frame using pocket screws. The shelves are full depth so I could get a larger number of screws joining the shelves to the frame (some of the cases get pretty heavy!).

Because I wanted the shelves to be full depth and tolerances were pretty tight, I cut out openings for the handles. All of the front edges got a quick round over with the router.

7QUfktg.jpg

The three sizes of bins that come with the cases are well suited for most general hardware uses, though it seems like the medium and small sizes are in the highest demand.

g9mzffL.jpg

Unfortunately you can't buy the bins without the cases, so you might end up buying a few cases for extra bins. I did end up creating some free bins by including specific tools with their respective hardware in the cases. Because all the bins lock into place when the lids are closed, there is no need to have all the bins in place to keep things from moving around. The photo below shows my PEX crimper and cutter in the case with the bands. I do the same with rivets / riveter and a few other tools.

cfDuPea.jpg

I've begun to do more electronics work in my workshop, so I've been accumulating more small components. I wanted to stick with the same type of parts cases, but unfortunately to sort very small parts with these cases results in way too much wasted volume to be effective. A bit of browsing on Thingiverse, however, revealed that the 3D printing community was way ahead of me. A savvy user created a tool that allows you to generate customizable bins that fit the Harbor Freight cases.

kKmeZTF.jpg

The really cool function of the tool is the ability to generate stacking bins that are fractions of the full bin height, so you can sort more components within the same footprint. For example, I'm printing the half height, 5 compartment bins for sorting resistors.

jermfZZ.jpg

All in all, this was a pretty cost effective to add a ton of storage and organization in a pretty small footprint. I think I used one 3/4" sheet and two 1/2" sheets of plywood. With a coupon, the medium parts cases get down to $5.99 each. I'll likely buy a stack of spares, because I'm bound to drop and break a case at some point, but they seem pretty robust.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I picked this up not to long ago. I’m pretty sure it was in a fire. I saved all the paint but handles needed repaint. I went with silver as I didn’t think I’d ever get a close grey. I want more of them.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

I made a cabinet. Real easy. Leftover 3/4" plywood glued/screwed into a 5 sided box (one side open). Then a 1x2 cut to length, makes the "shelves" to hold some cheap plastic harbor freight storage bins. I made two of them out of a 4x8 sheet and one 8' 1x2. I forget how many bins are in it but it's more than I can move by hand weight wise. I like them. MUCH nicer than having a stationary "bin" or set of bins. MANY times I have been in the middle of a project and needed one bolt or clamp or screw, and almost always on the other end of the shop. So instead of walking back & forth to the bins, I pull a bin out, take it to the work and choose the proper fastener or whatever it is I need, then when done, put the bin up. I didn't see one shown in any of the pics of this thread, but since photo bucket is jacked up I may have missed it. Unfortunately since HF has jacked the price of the bins from $2.99 ea to $7.99 ea, it's not as cheap as it used to be. Both of mine were under $100 for the pair including the bins and all the wood, screws, glue. I did not paint them (yet).

I really wanted a card catalog but you can't find that stuff here. There are a million resellers, pawn shop owners, yard salers, flea marketers, etc and every time there's a sale or auction or even if a new flea market opens up, place is packed on day #1 and about everything of any kind of value is gone. One of my many gripes about living here.

Re: Nut & Bolt Storage

Like a lot of us, my nuts and bolts are in a hodge podge of bins and boxes. Craigslist find, about a year ago, I picked up some surplus hardware storage racks and boxes that used to be in an old ACE. However, the cheap cardboard inserts just wont work. Many years ago I found ONE of these at a garage sale and put Plano Model 3600 boxes in it. They were deeper than the little gray ones in these racks but i could cut and modify the four drawers. Now I'm look at cutting and modifying A LOT of drawers. I'd use the plano boxes again but buying this many is $$$. I figure I could get a cheap HF multi tool to trim all of the trays to fit the Plano box but that's another expense.

Ideas on how to convert these?
