OBD1 and live data?

got a couple customers with OBD1 cars--95 F150, '90 Supra and '94 Supra. Have been looking at OBD1 scanners but I can't get a clear answer as to whether they do live data. I've looked at the Innova 3140, Actron CP9690, Bosch 1300. I think the Snap On MT2500 does live data but I'd rather not spend that if i don't have to.

You may want to check in specific car forums. Some brands were more willing to give out live data than others. I've been using an Autel MP408 labscope on the OBD-I (and earlier) Volvos.

Live data was in its infancy back in those days. Too many diagnostic workflows ended with replacing otherwise un-testable parts with "known good". "Known-goods" were plentiful and easy to swap in. So much so that the dealership guys kept the usual suspects in their tool boxes. That way they could go from diags to making money quickly.

OBDI cars do have limited live data. I can't think of a brand that does not. The sample rate is stupid slow but it's better than nothing. A used snap on tool with OBDI adapters is ideal, but hard to find locally. It's worth hunting for though, as they come up cheap from time to time. I bought a Gen1 Modis with all the non-euro OBDI adapters for $350. Used it for 2-3 years, had 1 battery rebuilt, kept the OBDI adapters, sold it for $250 in a couple days. My snap on driver just GAVE me a full set of OBDI adapters with euro. I just wanted the adapter lead for my new-to-me zeus and he had a box of extras from another trade in that the owner didn't want. Point being, while the stuff is rare, demand is low.

The innova you listed has GM/FORD/Chrysler adapters, plus honda and toyota. Ford I know has 2 different adapters. The one most brands include is the EEC4? Also be aware some brands need 12v and ground supplied to the DLC to make them talk. So you tool needs to supply this internally or you need a 12v adapter for the cigarette lighter or the battery.

What are you trying to accomplish? Do you have codes you're chasing? Driveability issues? Do you have a lab scope? Labscope, fuel pressure gauge, and plugging EGR valves off are my main OBDI diagnostic tools.

Skip live data and find a scan tool that has the best reviews for the cars you want to use it for. It wasn't until obdii that there was a common standard. Before that manufacturers did their own thing. Most of those older vehicles weren't capable of live data and you had to do the work yourself and check the different sensors with a multi meter or scope.

The Actron CP9690 is the one the local Advance Auto Parts places here use to read customers cars. I've borrowed it to use the OBDl functions. I don't remember what I was doing with it but they let me use it in their parking lot. Maybe the ones near you would do the same. Then once you know it will do what you want buy it.

You guys are great, thx. No specific codes I'm chasing just trying to get ahead of things and be able to respond when something comes up, which it will with these vehicles. I guess it's a **** shoot. Fuel trims in particular would good to see....

My OTC Genysis will display live OBD I data, such as it is. Keep in mind that those ECUs were designed in the early 1980s and have very limited processing power and data throughput. Even the "live" data is at at pretty low sample and refresh rate.

Vetronix mastertech, later bought by bosch I think. Look on ebay. Very cartridge and accessory heavy, but they work, they were factory tools for honda and Toyota in the obd1 and early obd2 days. I might have extra to make you a kit up, but I didn't get them cheap lol. And yes they do live data with the right cables and cards for the manufacturer

I have an old MT2500 for "heritage diagnostics", they still work pretty good on pre 2001 vehicles. Live data and actuator tests for quite a few things

Mine has a multi brand cartridge for Ford/GM/VAG and a seperate EOBD cartridge (UK model)

If you buy used you need the 16 pin OBD2 plug/OBD1 vehicle appropriate connectors and personality keys

I don’t know about Toyota, but I would imagine they sold a cartridge and cable as they are popular in the USA

TunerPro is great if you are good with laptop. Freeware/donate software. A lot of support in community for it on, at least, GM which is what I use it on. It has some support for other brands but you’d have look website to see what models.

It does support live data but that depends on the particular ECU and OBDI implementation. Live data on OBDI is fast enough to watch closed loop operation and integrator/BLM - trims on GM PCM.

What cables does one use with TunerPro on laptop and Ford EEC 4 ?

Also Actron 9690 anyone use it on a 90's Ford to capture live date? possible?
thanks
