Obsolete Tools? Which ones? ...

I enjoy hunting (and finding) tools from the 1920's to 1960's due to their often superior quality. In that hunt I have picked up some tools that look cool and are well made, but I don't think I will ever use (i.e. fence pliers)

So...in attempt to empty out my tool box and make it more useful, I am dumping many of the old tools that seem too redundant. Probably at the dollar bin at the flea market.

That made me think about what tools I will likely NEVER have a use for and should purge from my box. Tools that my cordless drill, ratchet and air tools have superceded...

What tools do you all consider redundant and not worth crowding up your main tool box?

Fence pliers
Speed Wrench?
Wood handled pipe wrench?
Old timey metal cutting pliers?

Anything else?

I have a separate cabinet that houses a) tools I do not have room for in my main box and b) old tools I keep for the 'cool' factor:
1 drawer is various measuring tools and old taps
1 drawer is utility knives and misc stuff
1 drawer is old hammers
1 drawer is extra screwdrivers, extra hook and pick sets, some yankee drivers etc
1 drawer is wrenches including monkey wrenches/wooden pipe wrenches
1 drawer is my old Klein pliers collection with a few other brands mixed in

I like using a speed handle on my taps when I'm cleaning lots of threaded holes on engine blocks..so for me, speed handle is not obsolete.
And I've got 1000 ft of livestock fencing so the fencing pliers come in handy, actually have two of them.

Soon you can add the timing light to the dinosaur drawer.

A 3/8" drive speed handle is my most used drive tool for assembling engines.

hand saws of any type, other than a pull saw.

I agree for the most part. But, as far as I'm concerned hacksaws are not obsolete. They are still useful on small parts and in areas where a band saw won't fit.

I have never seen something a hacksaw can get that a sawzall cannot. I bought my first reciprocating saw in 1984 and used a hacksaw once since then.
I will never use a hacksaw again.

Trouble is when your a thousand feet from power or hip deep in the muck. Then old fashion hand tools become real handy.

I keep fence pliers in the car. They are like the original multitool. Good for all kinds of stuff.

Can you use that recip saw to cut a new slot in the head of a 1/4" screw?

I've seen my father in law cut a slot in a screw while it was installed deep in the engine bay with a great big DeWalt Sawzall with the blade in upside down so he could fit the saw in the bay.

Scared the **** out of me.

Well... it's been quite a while since I needed that 2' long cast iron 2 1/2" octagon wagon wheel wrench.
but it's staying.

Well... an old-fashioned bit-and-brace (hand drill) I suppose. Got one of those. Those fence pliers though, they get used. So does the speed handle for sockets.

Darn if I am getting rid of my timing light; I still use that on old cars!

Fence pliers.. obsolete? In the right hands they are a godsend. And mine don't take up space in the box, they live in one of the pockets in the door of my truck.. as mentioned before.. "the original multi-tool".
I do some work for some folks that believe that hot fence = barbed wire fence. Not quite. When the cows tear **** up, you gotta get creative.
