Worst waste of space I've seen is the area above the lawn mower, and snowblower.
Both now have a custom made cubby hole for them to roll into with a nice "shelves of varied height" construction above them to hold the longer stuff/odd sized stuff..ie. those fold up chairs, the long handled buffer and sawz-all, shop-vac and hoses, the grandkids battery 4-wheeler and "grand-dad propelled toys"

Here's a picture of a nice work bench w/ storage featured in a magazine several years ago. Someday I'll have the time to build it. Isn't it funny when you have the time, you don't have the resources and when you have the resources you don't have the time...

Where did you get this pic from? I lick to see more and read more about it.

Thanks,
Gary

I'll have to take an updated picture, but these are overhead cubicle cabinets that my office was getting rid of. They're Steelcase brand, and very heavy duty. The probably weigh about 80# each.

I've taken those 2 down and sold them to a friend, but I've replace those 2 with 4 equal-sized ones. I need to sheetrock the ceiling before I can put more up.

Look around on Craigslist and you might find businesses liquidating old cubicles, etc.

How about a Steelcase desk on top of a Steelcase credenza all free from work?

The drawers open completely, are very deep, and hold tons of stuff.

More free cabinets all on rollers:

And a place to store my 6 foot wreath:

And of course a place to store beer:

I don't think these would be considered genius, they are not even original, but for about an hour of work and some scrap ply, melamine and 1x I made a french cleat shelf for some power tools (I hate wrapping up cords and wanted to free up some shelf and drawer space). I found this design on the web and it was perfect, for now anyway. The hooks are nothing more that ply glued and screwed to a cleat of 1x and some 3/4" dowel.

(this wall is a work in progress. Once I figure out what I am doing I will finish and paint it)

I wouldn't call it genius, but in my garage, which is a 3-bay post and beam carriage-shed style like this...

garage_carriage.gif
I got rid of the 3 roll up doors and built barn doors. This opened up all that space above the doors that was taken up with the tracks. I then built lofts on each end, which are accessible from the center bay.(there are doors, it is behind the ladder in the pic, below)

The lofts go from the front of the garage to about 1/2 of the way to the rear. You can't stand up in the lofts, but there is plenty of storage space, figure an 2-300 sq. ft of storage. I keep all the stuff which I don't need access to very often up there.

The center bay also had the roll up door removed and now has enough height clearance to put in a lift (in the future)
Having those two lofts also means less space up above to heat in the winter, the floor of the loft/ceiling in the garage is insulated, so the lofts are cold storage.

Seeing as there are a lot of car people on here, the space in the center bay, right above the door opening, is perfect for a tire rack. It can be kinda seen in the picture.

Best pic I have access to at work...

Very well done! Excellent use of the space and converting to barn doors to get rid of the tracks for the old roll-up doors is a great idea for anyone that has that option (and isn't so lazy they "need" roll-up doors!) :)

Definitely get that lift. It'll make working on that race car SOOOO much easier. I'm not sure if you want a 2-post or a 4-post but the cost is relatively cheap now and you can score a good deal on a well cared for used one if you keep your eyes open for shops closing their doors or dealerships going out of business.

Cheers,
LWW

Thanks! I will get a lift for sure, but I have to reinforce the floor first, this was built on an old chicken coop foundation, so its a farmer's handywork with a pile of rocks and concrete so I'm going to have to pour some good footings first.

First gen impreza in McRare/Reid style, I love it! Is that an imported turbo motor or na engine? Either way that 95 (could be 94?) looks awesome. Mind posting more?

In the photo you can see a loft style shelf along the rear wall to the right. It's 48" deep by 12' long on the right half, & 24" deep by 12' long on the left. Below, there is enough headroom for me to stand, & above there is just enough headroom to walk on the shelf as long as you duck slightly. I may put a work bench & shelving under it next year, but right now my tool chest, parts washer, wheels, tires & a few other things are there.

I built it to store some of the larger, spare, sheet metal body parts I have like hoods, doors, etc. Right now they are spread out in my basement, shed, & garage floor & take up too much room. I also want them out of the way so they don't get damaged. It's just a double 2"x6" at the front edge supporting other 2"x6" joists that are perpendicular to the wall with a 3/4" plywood deck.

Until I build an exterior staircase to the second floor, I use the left end of the shelf as a landing between two oak library ladders that I bought used for $35 each. The upper one is anchored to the wall & remains stationary while the lower one has one bolt into the edge of the shelf that I can easily remove to get the ladder out of the way if I need the floor space.

Spray can storage. I have 2x4 framing every 4' holding up the balloon joist (rim joist?) of my shop's second floor. Stared at the wasted space for awhile and thought...hmm...that's about the same depth as a spray can. Used 1x4 for shelving (ripped it a little and used the leftover for the "rails") & Simpson 2x2 connectors for the edge supports:

Not genius by any means, but here's a couple of my storage ideas for clamps and for loose hardware. I find the plastic bins very easy to locate loose parts in; I use the tackle boxes if I have more than 2 of the same item.

BTW, how do I move my pictures from thumbnails to being a part of the post?

That's quite a cobweb collection you have.

I have this huge spider problem I mentioned in my into thread - this is only one years worth. Fortunately they don't seem to be harmful, just annoying.

And yes you all narrowly avoided being flashed, NOT a pretty sight.

Can you take some pics of this? I'm very interested in what you have done!

How about ideas for storage of short lengths(<3') of metal tubing/scraps?
Dave

I need do build something to. I was going to use old downspout and make a tiered cart on wheels. Then I worried about the sharp edges after cutting the downspout. Anybody know of a way to protect myself from the cut edge besides putting tubing over it. Dan
