New tool alert. Went to our local steel supply place (large industrial shop, so dropouts are significant in size) a couple weeks ago to buy a bunch of supplies to make a finger brake. As we were poking around for material, one of the guys there mentioned that they just happened to have an old finger brake sitting outside under a tarp. Someone had said they were coming to get it for months and never showed, so $500 later we brought home an old Chicago 14ga finger brake and some extra steel to make missing fingers. They bent a piece of 3/4" steel on one of their 20' hydraulic brakes for us at the same angle as the fingers.... it was incredible how little this machine cared.

I would guess this thing weighs 800-1000 lbs. Way heavier than it looks. Got the lift situated to lower it out of the truck bed.
After many many hours of scraping and wire wheeling old lead paint off which was incredibly difficult (3 stitches in my thumb from a band saw incident), I coated it in Steel It. This stuff is incredibly expensive, but it makes things look great, has amazing coverage with 1 coat, is a rust inhibitor, and is weldable.
I'm still in the process of reassembling, but it's almost there. Very happy with the results and now we have a $3k+ finger brake for a total investment of $650 (with paint) and some elbow grease
