If you’re in a shop environment the lisle 17pc kit works great for fluted filters.

Or if you want something more universal they have both small and large auto adjusting filter wrenches

I recommend Flotool SuperGraphite. They never stick to the filter. I don't have to fight them to get them off. They're made out of a high grade graphite nylon.

home use you will probably fine with plastic type cups, long as you don't over tight them.

shop use get a metal version, some filters are so tight that plastic type will expend or slip.

I've had the same set for probably a decade. They work fine and the only problem I've ever had is the female receiver stripping out on a few. But since I started using a 6 point socket that annoyance ended. The other thing I don't care for is having to tap them off an oily filter, they stick pretty damn good on a overly tightened filter.

If you’re looking for a set, disregard this post. If you’re looking for specific sockets to fit your vehicles, be careful with what you buy. I wanted to buy one for my wife’s Sonata. I typically use OE filters. I went to Walmart one day and remembered that I wanted to look for one of these sockets- an impulse purchase if you will. I found the filter on the shelf for her car, and then found the socket that fit that filter. The aftermarket filter was not the same size as the OE filter. I don’t remember which brand I used to find the size. All I know is when I was about to use it on the car, it was too big. Bummer.

I would prefer the cap style as my fiancé’s dart is a pain get under. I’m only using napa filters as I can get them in bulk for a deal from the manager.
The truck on the other hand is the dealerships problem till it hits 100k miles.
That said I would only need one good socket.

Get the alloy or pressed steel ones off eBay.
I use a 21pc set off ebay in daily autoshop for last 3 years no bother and they decent fit .
Prices vary from around 25 to 60bucks for sets or you can buy just size you want 3 or 4bucks each .
One of those tools don't need be spendy just decent design .

Mine always slide right off even though they fit magnificently. :)

My alloy ones have threaded hole so if was stuck can wind in an m8 bolt.
I always remove them once filter tweaked loose, can't remember last time had one proper stuck on a filter .
Had issues with damaged/misshaped filters ...

Well I have a 3/8 drive 32mm koken low profile socket for vw/bmw. Style oil filters mainly the type that are the element type. I buy these on a car by car basis. Pliers wrench seems to get the caps off if I do not have a particular size. I also have a channel lock oil filter pliers if I have to deal with screw on type filters.

+1 on the Lisle small and large adjusting filter wrenches. Both use 3/8" square drive and grip like crazy, plus together they cover a large range. I just wish they had an even larger one because my diesel pickup oil filter is still too large for the big one...and now I don't like using any of my other filter wrenches because they stink in comparison.

These are the best. I realize this is a tool forum but I have no idea why you'd want sockets when there are so many different filters. Tighten by hand and use the Lisle tool linked here if necessary to loosen.

Edit- the Lisle are way better than the 3 jaw Craftsman style also shown- I had one of them and they don't grip like the Lisle to remove one that's overtightened. The Lisle bites in, look at the design

Beefier than the Lisle

Tell us the material thickness and cost for each.

That does not look like its significantly thicker material than the Lisle. But yes, it is pretty.

I've got the HF set, many years old at this point. The Ford FL820S one broke the sq drive disc out as they're only spot-welded.

A few minutes w a grinder to remove the paint and welder to do a full bead and it's better than new

Been using one of these for years and it works great! Gotta luv the price too! If the filter is on really tight, the tools 3 jaws tend to crush it a little but who cares. You're replacing it anyway!

although originally designed to fit the internal oil filter cap found on Oldsmobile 3.5L engines, this end cap wrench fits about 90% of wix made spin on oil filters for GM, Ford, & Chrysler cars and light trucks. Probably my most used filter wrench.

Yes something like that is what I’m looking for. Might try napa or one of the parts getting places to see what they got before I order one.

Which type of filters?

If your talking about the cartridge inserts with standard hex fittings on the plastic housings then facom sell a good set for around £50, although you can pick up decent sets, or individuals, for a good bit less. The housings aren't highly torqued, so even the cheap stuff will do.

If its the larger cup type sockets then i have a large set in my box at work, cant remember the brand but its in a red box, think it was an amazon purchase for about £50ish again. Mine are steel, and fit plenty of different brands of filters.

Lisle sell decent quality universal fit filter removers, they have 2 sizes i'm sure. I went with the smaller one and its been ideal for every filter i've came across in a car. About £20 delivered over here.

Forget about large pairs of filter pliers, chain wrenches etc.. Modern cars give little access to the sides of the filter 95% of the time. Therefore you really need a tool that works from the top. However, channellock sell a small pair of filter pliers that actually fit in a few places, particularly on Renault vehicles. The smaller pair shown here;

Yep, those work great at getting off stubborn filters the grease monkeys crank on too tight. Much better than the 3 jaw version previously mentioned. I find the 3 jaw version ends up crushing and twisting filters that are really tight.

OK, so I cant believe I actually took the time to do this, but here you go...

A couple better pics borrowed from the interweb...

Both tools are rated for filter sizes 2.5" - 3.25". Slightly different designs as the Lisle bottom plate is 2 pcs held together with rivets. The Motivx bottom plate is one solid piece. The spring design differs too with the Lisle being a simple spring captured in a hole in each adjustable ear (which are prone to popping off in my experience). The Motivx uses a tensioned wire "spring" that is captured under each pivot point and held on with circlips.

According to my scale, the Lisle weighs 351 grams and the Motivx weighs in at 385 grams. Depending where and when you shop the Lisle costs $8-$10 and the Motivx is $15-$17. Lisle is made in the good ol' USA and Motivx COO is Taiwan. Material thickness: Motivx bottom plate = .350", Lisle = .315". Side "ears": both come in at .125".

Very similar designs but the Motivx, IMO, improves on it with better gripping "teeth" on the ears, beefier one piece bottom plate, and superior spring design.

All that said, if you have a Lisle and are happy with it I wouldn't throw it out for the Motivx. But if you like this style of filter wrench and are in the market for one, the Motivx is clearly a better (and yes, beefier) design.

Hope this helps...

I've used that Craftsman one for years now. Love it. I've got a Scion XD now with the stupid cartridge style filter. I have a metal cap for that style but you literally have to pound it on and off the use it. Not sure if the prongs on the Craftsman filter remover would damage the plastic filter housing though....
