Preset to 17 ft/lbs. I wonder how they came up with 17 ft/lbs. :headscrat

Cut from the link you provided & as stated above -

The tool fits all standard general aviation aircraft oil filters

To prevent damage to the converter-plate gasket, the oil-filter gasket should be lubricated with a thin coating of Dow Corning Compound (DC-4) before the filter is installed. The filter should then be installed and hand-tightened until the seating surface makes contact with the lubricated gasket. The filter should then be turned with a torque wrench until a torque of 18-20 foot pounds is reached. The 20-foot pound maximum torque should not be exceeded.

Probably comes with an out-of-date torque certificate lol. Every time I buy something like this the certificate is always over a year old.

They probably tested and decided 17 ft.lb. is the torque required to deform the rubber gasket enough to provide a good seal. It's possible that the torque spec is related to the diameter of the oil filter: larger diameter oil filters require bigger torque.

The specs on my Audi is 20 N.M.(about 15 ft-lb), while 12 N.M. (about 9 ft-lb) for my Honda.

Are you considering a torque wrench like that? I'd rather use a regular torque wrench for that.

I didnt even realize, this is getting out of hand now. Lol

Don't forget this post from today from Wamsutta in the what's your favorite ratchet thread. Lol

Let my ask you a question: Do you think it's possible to over torque an oil filter with your TL72? You'd have to use a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter and a cup wrench, but it can be done. The reason why I ask is because I've got the TL830 version and I'm thinking about making it my oil filter tightening ratchet.

.... I still get it too tight though because it still leaks. It's a NAPA Platinum 41040.

I took one back to the store the last time I changed the oil; and this time, I'm going to have to take this one back too. I'm thinking once they're over tightened, they're ruined......

You guys need to be careful. This is what Wamsutta's arms look like:

He generates 50 ft-lb torque with a 6" ratchet like nothing.
