Ast are the best around the aluminum cup style

The black metal ones don't work aswell with my experience with working since square drives don't fit easily at times

Even HF sells a cheap decent set... the filter pliers from channellock are pretty nice too. HF has their own version of those that gets good reviews.. a pair of 12" & 16" channellocks can get many stubborn filters off if need be.

Assenmacher. They're cast instead of being made of stamped tin like most.

i looked at that set and i don't think it even comes with a cup side 93mm-15 flute which is good for f150/stangs and challengers.

didn't see 65mm-14 flute as well for nissans either.

I have the HF set and don't like it. It's like they designed them to not quite fit a filter right. Either too big or small

I've used my Lisle set (Same as linked above) for about 8 years now and haven't found anything I don't like about them

I have all kinds of cup styles because I lost some when moving, lent some, etc., and then some came back. I usually stay away from cheap tools, but for the cup style filter wrenches, I've never had a problem with any of them. Filters aren't on that tight. I've only run into one that I had to destroy to get off, and no better grade of filter wrench would have made a difference.

It depends on what you work on but, my favorite oil filter cup wrench is the OTC 6901. It was originally designed for the Oldsmobile aurora/intrigue with the plastic oil filter cap on the bottom of the oil pan but, it fits 90% of common spin on oil filters regardless of brand.

update on this. ended up waiting until they where on sale.

this is the set i got (link below)
http://www.lislecorp.com/divisions/products/?product=612&division=1&category=9

used them for the first time on 2002 nissan, didn't work. the smallest cut was to big for the oil filter even tho its made for that size filter. soooo not sure what to do now. not sure if the cup was made fucked up or what but not impressed with my first use and if they cant even work on my own dam cars then wtf is the point. yet the cheap pos one that broke after using it 2 dam times fit the filter like a glove.

Yeah the sq drive came off the one for the Ford modular motors in my HF set. They’re just a metal ring spot welded to the cup.

I cleaned the paint off and welded it all the way around. It won’t be coming apart again LOL

The HF set has been “ok.” I have no intention of replacing it but can’t say it’s wonderful.

Hmm, like the “smaller” filters? Seems unlikely it’d work on the larger stuff like Ford Windsor *8’s and Chrysler *16’s? Or even the Ford modular *2’s (aka FL-820S)?

Ive been using the Lisle set for a while and like it, good quality and you can find it pretty cheap on Amazon or fleabay.... aside from the occasional specialty filter wrench, Ive encountered no problems using this

For these to be effective you also need to buy the filters they fit well. I get every off brand to original brand under the sun. Cars with tiny filters that should be bigger but the base fit, whatever thing yhe guy before could invent.

The pliers are my first line weapon just for this.
I still would like to try the Lisle set.

the one that broke fit all the brands i have used. the lisle didnt on 2 diff brands. just was to big. both the old broke cup and new lisle are stamped with the same size.

and yes i had to use my oil filter pliers instead since i had no choice. i prefer the cup style better tho.

I find I get a far better cup fit if I tap the cup onto the filter before attaching the ratchet I'm using.

i tried everything. it just wobbled around the filter, could just free spin it. bang it on the floor or workbench. nothing.

I used the clinch band type for years and it usually did the job. It finally broke and I purchased a Fram brand cup style off the rack at a big box store. The 3/8" drive slot wallowed out the first time I used it so it went in the trash. Then I bought the HF set and been using it for years on large and small filters. The last time I used the small cup on a hard to get motorcycle filter it slipped but the filter nubs bent in. The previous owner really cranked down that filter. The cup remained in tack and ok. I ended up driving a screwdriver thought the filter and backing it out. I have several different pliers that come in handy at times but the cups are my first to go to. The best cup style I have is for toyota filters. It has large notches that engage the cup and it would be impossible to slip the cup on the filter (actually its a filter cartridge).

Interesting thing now is some of the small motorcycle filters have a 3/8" square drive welded on the end so you can slip a ratchet in to unscrew it. In my particular case (Suzuki Bandit 1200) I have to maneuver behind the bikes aftermarket exhaust headers and hold the cup on a horizontal filter until I can slide a ratchet in. Not enough room for two hands so its tedious trying to keep the cup on and insert the ratchet at the same time.

Im a DIY guy and found that the the cups only fit certain filters. Some filters have more flutes at the bottom. So the cup may fit a purolator filter, it may not fit a ac delco even if it’s for the same car. I found a couple cups that fit the filter I use on my tractor and my Camaro. For the daily drivers I use this since It fits a range of filters.

Here's the deal. IT GREATLY DEPENDS UPON THE BRAND OF OIL FILTER. For example, my car is a Hyundai Sonata with the 2.4L engine. The OEM oil filter, which is in fact made for Hyundai by WIX, and the WIX branded aftermarket filters fit my TOPTUL cup wrench perfectly but a FRAM (Who the hell would use their garbage filters anyway) is too small and doesn't fit.

Bottom line, go to a parts store and look up the right filer for your car in all of the brands that they sell and try each one with what you believe to be the right wrench. This will solve your problem

Cartridge type filers....
Toyota....cta 1726
Gm ecotec 32mm socket
Regular spin on oil filters....channel lock 212
If it's bitchy lisle 63600, one hand on it, other on your ratchet. There are 2 sizes of this tool.
Big *** diesels, williams 40224.

Pliers are my go to tool for spin on oil filters first. I look at the lisle if they fail.
The cta 1726.....I wouldn't bother with anything but that for toyotas. It's used daily with an 18" flex head 1/2 drive icon.
Bring the HF hate, but that ratchet I abuse, and it keeps going.
I still want my proto 3/8 flex.

Indie senior, see them all.

I got a set of cups from Harbor Freight and I don't like them I tried them on 2 cars and they didn't work well. I got one from Walmart the same cut type and it worked decent. I think i'll be giving them away or give them away if they continue to not fit on any filter. I honestly think that the strap type filter wrench is the best all around kind just by design.

You also might like to look at cta2569, and more specifically, it's relatives, I have the one that handles hondas, sorry I'm at home and not at the shop. I have two sizes of these, very useful. The larger I own will handle a fram 2, 8a, 16, etc., I've had it for 25 years, I'll try and find mfr and pn tomorrow.

I have a drawer full of oil filter wrenches - the cast aluminum caps, pressed steel caps, various strap wrenches and pliers, yet the one I use most often is like the one ThePostman referenced. It is great. Have had it forever, longer than any of the other ones in my drawer, and not sure the brand. KD Tools has a series, and I've seen it with other brand names, same tool. Here's an example: https://www.toolweb.com/kdt2029.html

Cups make no sense to me. Why not just buy the two Lisle universal gripping ones and be done with it? 63200 or similar is one size. Way cheaper, universal, takes a fraction of the space as a cup set. But that's too easy, I guess?

Edit : 63250 , 63600

I was wondering the same thing. I've been using Lisle 63600 for 20+ years and no issues on taking any oil filter out (other than those inner filter only types). It's been great as it takes up hardly any storage space and just grab this with 3/8 ratchet and done!

If you're going to go that route, I'd get the Motivix versions. I have both (Lisle & Motivix), the Motivix are nicer.

Cups make sense for a DIYer with limited access radially to the filter.
