Nice buy. What size? I passed on an almost new 5 or 6" Wilton bullet vise, with a swivel base, for $120 or so last week, not sure if I made the right choice.

A 5" Wilton for 50 bucks; you sir do ****!!

What are you trying to get that lil South Bend? There are a lot of great lathes that come up on CL around here. Don't go crazy paying for that it looks like it was rode hard. I had a war baby heavy 10", a 13" is a better choice if your stuck on SB.

Very nice, good job on the referb too! What did you use to clean the press, and use as primer (brand) etc?

I just used a rattlecan of rustoleum for now, I have a qt of epoxy someplace that will be used when I have a few other tools that need a repaint.

Some are sold with a swivel base (450-S etc) & some are sold without (450-N etc). We think this one has a swivel originally & it's supposed to be in the shop someplace. However, according to Wilton/Jet this AM if it was sold as a N model you can't add a swivel as there are machining processes that are done to the S that are omitted on the N.

For cleaning I scraped the clag off with a knife, threw it in the blasting cabinet & hit it with glass bead, then hit the shiny/smooth parts with a coarse (maroon) scotchbrite roloc disc on the die grinder.

I was going to say I couldn't see you cleaning it so well simply using a wire brush, or some sort of rotary cleaning brush.

Well done, now you really got me going on investing in that sand blaster I saw on e-bay!

Looks good; as a finishing touch may I suggest you lap the top and sides of the jaws. It will look like it just came off the line.

Steve

I did, but didn't get too carried away. :)

There seems to be a serial # on one of the jaws, did Wilton do this? Might be able to date it ..

Theres a few deep(ish) cuts in the jaws, I may buy new ones... or possibly make some news one from aluminum.

That may be a P/N I have not had the jaws of either in a while, both got a coat of dove gray imron when I did some ice repair on a twin Cessna at least 15 years ago. The imron has held up remarkably well.

That sounds about right, I got a PINT of signal red Glasurit single stage enamel for my car last year and it was over 160.00 with a quart of reducer. Powder coating is looking cheaper every day. Hell the gallon of white urethane and hardener I used for my band saw was 130.00.

I think that the way you can tell is to look at the bottom of the vise (the surface that contacts your bench when bolted down). If it is perfectly flat so that when bolted down, the entire surface would contact the bench, it is an N model. If there is a ring around the outside edge that does NOT contact the bench, it is made to accept a swivel base. Another way of describing it would be to say that there is a gap between the vise and bench all the way around when the vise is sitting on the bench.

Anyway, the vise looks VERY nice. Bead blasting looks like it beats the hell out of electrolysis as far as timeliness and mess are concerned. I could never come close to doing as much as you did in 24 hours. Can't wait to see it with epoxy and highlighted letters. :bounce:
