old atlas drill press??

picked up this drill press. Is it a good one to restore or should I pick up a new one?

I'll upload more pics when I get it to the shop. looks like a pully is upside down, and the motor will only spin if you hand start the sob

Looks good other than the arc of shame. The motor more than likely just needs a new start cap, should be an easy fix.

Try blowing out the motor with compressed air. Many times the starter winding switch will get full of dust and not make contact. The cap may also be dried out and bad, but the switch is an easy thing to rule out.

I have the exact same one, except mine is set up for bench top. Works great!

As to the chuck key, probably has a Jacobs chuck, need to get the model # off the chuck. There are charts that tell you which keys fit which Jacobs chucks.

never thought of this, but I wonder if a guy could get a nice big sheet of about 16 gage or thicker metal, and epoxy it down real good, esp. on the edges, making it about an 1/8" over size, and once dry, carefully grind and file the edges to a perfect fit to the table.

Joe: It's a good one. I have an identical one that's done its job for over 5 years. If you're going to drill metal, you may want to get or make a speed reduction pulley. The slow speed is a little fast for metal.

IMO; On restorations, I plan to do mine sometime. Only because I plan to keep it. Although it's a lot of work, it will make it more of a pleasure to use.

You can probably get them from e-bay. I made my own. I only had to purchase the step pulley and hole saws to create the step hole in the block for the bearing to nest in. Everything else came from various parts bins in my shop.

Its when someone drills through the table on the drill press. The table can be swung in an arc and if people drill too far, they drill the table and if they do it enough it gives it the arc shape.

I've heard of guys who fill the holes with Devcon liquid steel and smooth them out.

It's toghy stuff. I've used it for repairing vacu-forming molds. I don't know how you want to repair your Wilton Bullet. You may get some good ideas on the Vise Repair 101 thread. Please post pictures of the damage.

McMaster Carr has capacitors. I ordered from them for my table saw. Matched the mf, voltage, size, then ordered.

yeah, l lost some of the cool factor on my craftsman 150, when I converted it to a Tread mill motor.
The belts were just too much of a PITA to change, esp. for a short fellow like myself.

Are they said to be smoother?
Thats like the link belts, everyone seems to like them,
but I have never tried them either. (I am too cheap I guess)

Sorry if I came off harsh I was pretty tired and grumpy yesterday.

I'm not a 100% sure they are metal it just looked it in the pics. I can't find the pic of the orange one anywhere now. I did see some orange stretch bands that may work, but the adjustable looks more industrial.

I think the big thing people didn't like about the adjustable is it may wear quicker on the pulley

No, don't want to be wearing out hard to replace pulley's.
I have always used the cogged V belts (when I had to buy new)
and don't really (seem to) have trouble with vibration.
Although in comparison, the link or metal may be smoother.
But my 150 passes the "nickel test" can't ask for much more.

Harbour freight has the green link belts that I think your looking for. You can get red from some places. Have not seen orange.

Those holes are an easy fix, they can be welded closed and then hit them with a grinder, if done right you can't tell they were ever there, not hard to do. If you don't have the equipment any welding shop could do it in 5 minutes.

I got the red ones here at busybeetools (canada). I think Grizzly has the red ones in the states. It's called power twist v-belt.
