I've been wanting a set of whitworth sockets so when I saw these I laid my money down. The set includes 1/4"whitworth to 3/4" whitworth plus the SAE sockets 7/16" to 7/8".

All SAE sockets are marked D and the number of 1/16ths; followed by the brand name; and made in USA then the actual size is stamped also in proper fractions. Example: a 7/8" socket reads "D14 Blackhawk made in USA 7/8"

The whitworth I can't understand at all. Markings are "WD 130 Blackhawk Made in USA" and that's it. The WD 130 is the 3?4" whitworth. Next is WD 120, WD 110, WD 101, WD 92, WD 82, WD 71, WD 60, and WD 52 (which is the 1/4" whitworth.

The seller was a great guy who inherited them from his grandfather and wanted them to go to someone who could use them. I didn't dicker on his $40.00 asking price as I was happy enough just to find this set of whitworth sockets.

$40 seems like a great price to me. Love the brand, too. ;)

Whitworth tools usually are marked 1/4W, 1/2W, etc..., where the W stands for Whitworth.

I am not familiar with the WD markings.

These older Blackhawks had the "D" in front on the sae sizes. I've never heard of Blackhawks of this vintage in Whitworth but I'm no expert on Blackhawk tools.

I took my whitworth combo wrenches with me to check and they compare perfectly to the wrenches (by eye) so the "WD" sockets are definitey whitworth. The numeral designation seems to correspond to .100ths of an inch. As soon as you get technical (in the .1000ths.) the numbers fall off. I may just put the whitworth sizes on them with a felt pen if I feel the need.

The seller's grandpa who owned them was a Brit and he worked on MG's and other brit cars apparently.

You must live in Victoria BC Canada I saw those as well. I buy and sell a fair bit on Used Victoria.

Happy Hunting. I guess I have some competition

Found this old thread in a backlog search. Wow. Very interesting set. The "D" on the "Dxx" marked Blackhawk 1/2 drive 12-points stands for "Double-hex", produced in the Quick-Disconnect (Q.D.) era, so my guess is that "WD" stands for Whitworth Double-hex, of the same era. The cool thing is that your example seems to be unique, 2oolhound. I wonder if there is a catalog ref somewhere...
