greetings all from Maine, I have an old craftsman motor, 1/4 hp split phase induction. when I connect the electrical cord, the exterior case is " hot", and if I connect the ground, it's shorting out, so not sure if I have wired correctly. name plate and wiring diagram are awol so I'm hoping someone here can help. pics to follow!

Take a DVM and check each motor lead to frame. If any show a low resistance, a winding is shorted to frame.

there is when the back of the casing is attached, as you see right now, no, so I'm guessing the short is coming from the back housing somehow.

sorry perhaps a little more info would be helpful. When the motor is assembled and running, if i try to connect the ground from the outlet to the motor frame, it trips the GFCI. I know my outlet is good, and i know the wire is good. If i plug just the hot black wire to the motor, and check voltage, the casing has juice. I've gotten shocked touching the casing, just a minor one. If i remove the back housing, and then reconnect the hot wire, I no longer have power to the frame. So i'm guessing my problem involves the back of the housing. I cannot find any loose wires that may be touching the frame. Not sure what i should be measuring regarding resistance, or if i even have the motor wired properly, i can't find a wiring diagram online anywhere. Any help would be appreciated!
