It's a beautiful set. The smallest sockets sure have lived a full life though. Someone really got a lot of use out of them by the looks of the socket points.

It is a beauty. I have to say I was surprised by how used the small sockets are. The seller was honest in saying they were too.

Now I have to find the extension(s). It may have only come with a 6" like I saw in another set but not sure. That extension was unmarked as is the T bar in both sets.

If you were serious about swapping for PRC stuff, I would have driven over from Rochester area and swapped for new Chinese imports....Nice set

If you ever need a buyer for the set look me up. I need that 3/8" ratchet for my ratchet history series. ^_^

Great find in great condition!

I am curious to know if you think the ratchet can be serviced at all.

True story no joke but maybe about two or three years ago as the crow flies, I was standing in line waiting to buy something at Sears and an old codger like myself walked in with a bag full of very old tools and he was demanding all brand new tools (Chinese made) in exchange.

When he walked out the employees were pissed and mad as hell; so myself and one other customer asked "So what gives why are you guys so upset?"
At which time they all said old (make up a name________) Geezer Bob does this all the time so we only let him exchange so many tools every day; They went on too say...

"He goes to flea type places and buys up all the old broken tools returns them for new and then sells them for a profit"; as you guys can imagine this is an od story as you guys have heard it before now. But the tools that I saw him bring in were indeed very old.

Old Geezer Bob where are you finding all that old Craftsman Gold ???

Doom- it is definitely non serviceable, doesn't open. Silent too because no gears! Must be some type of clutch mech. If you ever had your hands on a Blackhawk Freewheeling you'll know what I mean.

Woody- I picked up a C series speeder today. There's lots of cool stuff out there, just never know when it will appear.

Hmmm, that is unfortunate. I would love to get a hold of two, so I could perform an autopsy on the "lesser" condition piece.

Do you suppose the retention plates on the top and bottom are press fit?

For my own edification, what's the story on the handles and extensions having the geometric C underline Craftsman logo but the sockets not? (I am not challenging the integrity of the set - I just don't know much about pre-war Vanadium Craftsman.) Reason I ask is, the logo type on the wartime Circle-H and BE handles, extensions, and sockets are all matching.

I do believe so.

BMAN It certainly is one of the most unique and cool looking grips when it comes to ratchets.

Private Lugz The sockets are correct, they are the same as Hinsdale of the era. I have no idea why it isn't the long C though. Don't know why the tbar and extension wouldn't have been stamped either. Probably cost related and matching pieces was not a priority :dunno: .

3Bay, is there a "makers mark" on the ratchet or other long C marked tools? that would be something to add to the "makers mark" tables for Craftsman...

WOW!!...3bay, this is certainly a set you don't see every day. Very, very nice...:drool:

I picked up a ratchet a while back thinking that it might be an older Craftsman like the one in this set. Same handle pattern, but it has a different style head and some sort of external spring loaded engagement/selector/release mechanism...not really sure of the function..:dunno: ,a hollow open ended handle, definitely an early Freewheeling design, but no maker marks that I can see. I'll post a pic a little later.

CRTDI, I know the ratchet you speak of. Has that stem that pops out the head right?Pretty sure what you have is a Hinsdale made ratchet, or so I've thought. I saw one posted somewhere not long ago. Maybe yours?

Guys, I will take a closer look but as far as I know, there are no other stampings and everything is consistent with Hinsdale.

I will just say that the broaches on the Craftsman and the Hinsdale examples are worlds apart.................

3Bay: i own a fair share of old Craftsman hand tools and tool boxes of all sorts and sizes and that might be the first tool box i've seen with the raised area and hole for the ratchet to set in. nice find

sounds like you have a couple buyers with cash and a few guys anxious to trade you some shiny new ones to trade for it. :evil:
