old Holley 4160 question

OK, so today at a local swap meet I bought an old Holley 4V carb because it was cheap and it has a strange feature.

The carb is a 4160 model (secondary metering plate) and the list number is 1850 (not 1850-2 or such, just 1850).

What is strange is that it has, what appears to be, an additional balance tube connecting the front and rear bowls. It has the normal aluminum balance tube, then just below that it has a smaller brass tube.

I will try to get a photo on here later, but for now, has anyone ever seen a Holley 4V 4160 with such a tube and/or know what it is for?

1849 has the extra tube. I have no idea why, but 1850 always jacked with me and 1849 didn't.
1850 was the $39.95 advertiser 600cfm carb of its day. 1849 550ish cfm was about $130.
I've never seen an 1850 with the small extra tube.

This is from 1979 era memory. Might be a bit off, but I'm sure of 1849 always having the brass tube.

I think the second tube is a high angle stall preventer.
I'm basing this on my webers. If I hit 23 degrees, they shut down. They required a high angle kit to prevent this.

You can see that that boss on the center of the throttle body has been machined flat on top to provide clearance for the brass tube. It sure looks like this carb is original and Holley put that brass tube there for some reason.

Top view. That Primary Bowl vent and lever mechanism, and the non-electric choke cap hint that this is an early Holley carb.

In the advanced reply box I can see the link to a dropbox account but once back in the normal forum I see nothing. There are a few other threads this happens on more than one forum. I'm not sure if the dropbox account is the unifier. Anyone out there know why this happens?

When I paste the address of the linked picture directly into the address bar, it tells me I need to sign in.

Not sure. Maybe if I am not logged into Drop Box then the link does not work?
What if I attach as a file?

If it is a factory supplied Holley, research is your friend. Might be worth it's weight in gold if it came off the right car.

It's a factory Mercury carb for a 430/460-

1959 Mercury 430 Auto List 1850 PB9M-9510-E, 5752426 (also shown as the service replacement carb for 58 Lincoln)

It's a replacement carb, as per the Jan 4 1965 build date.

Might be worth a couple of bucks to someone restoring that exact car, but other than that it's just a 600 vac sec. They're all over ebay from $25.00 Last one sold went for $39.99...

Thanks Tommy, now I know what it is and usage. I paid $10, but not really interested in selling it unless someone really needs it. Very likely no demand for 1958/58 Lincoln service carb!

Anyone know why it has that extra brass tube?

Are you talking about the bowel velt on top of the bowel? If so its on every holley carb put on a ford I have seen.

I agree that bowl vent is present on all early Ford versions of the Holley 4160, that is one way of spotting an older one.

What I am still asking about is the brass tube that runs parallel and just below the normal aluminum balance tube connecting the front and rear bowls.

There is a guy named Lars in Lafayette Colorado that hangs out on a few of the car forums including the C3 area of the CorvetteForum. He is the closest I know to being a carb expert. He publishes his email address for people to contact him with questions: [email protected]

If he doesn't know the answer to your question, he'll likely know where to get the answer.

This thread is WAY out of my league...but came across this video the other day. Pretty sure it's not even pertinent to the discussion..but figured it might provide some entertainment for you guys anyway.

I sure would like to know what brand of carb cleaner he soaked that carb in because my carbs never come out that clean!

The 4346 is one of my favorite carbs. You can't go wrong with one for almost any street car other than one with close to an all out race engine.

IDK why he did a rebuild and didn't bother to recoat it with chromate...

Tommy,

So, just how does someone go about recoating the Holley with chromate? Is that a process that can be done at home? And what exactly is Gold Iridite finish? smae thing?
