Old Man New Shop

32' x 64' x 12'6" pole barn with 24' x 16' gable porch.

After living in our new digs for a year we have started a new shop.
The workshop will be 24' x 32' with in floor heat and solar lighting. A 2 post lift is planned. The remaining space will be storage.

Have spent the last year working in a crammed 30' x 40' garage (it does have heat and a window A/C)

The begining.
Equipment showed up at the end of the week. Two guys started on a Monday morning and finshed Monday evening. They scraped off the topsoil then built the pad from the substrate then backfilled the topsoil around the sides. Also put 2 loads of crusher run on drive. Good operators!

Just got the call postponing the hole boring for 2 days due to rain. The waiting is the worst part. We got on the builders queue in Feb.

I guess inspecting and working with holes filled water might be difficult.

As I'm typing got call from the power Co. with their quote. Have to run separate power to shop due to distance from house (300'). Don't want to burn up that 25 amp Baldor motor on my air compressor.

With luck it should be framed by the end of the week. Will keep the camera on standby.

Clipped: it sounds like you are paying a pro or pros to do your work so it should go up pretty quickly now. with all that planning time sometimes a lot of things come up or need changes so best of luck with that.

are you still getting to keep the old 34 x 40 shop that would be perfect size for me if i didn't have the family's storage or stuff to store in it?

The 30x40 is going to be for our drivers including some of the antiques.
Jagman: One of the drivers is my wife's red MINI Clubman.
Wife has also requested a workbench for her use.

The solar lighting is passive. It will be a Daystar Skylight 4'x4'. Its similar to a big solar tube. I am hoping this will provide most of my daytime lighting needs.

I like the solar to LED idea. I hadn't thought of that. A couple of solar panels, voltage regulator for battery charging, deep cycle batteries , volatge regulator for output to LEDs and LEDs. The inverter woudn't be needed as LEDs operate on DC.

Drivesit: I am building this one with the checkbook (something new for me). CFO suggested it.
I might keep a small work area in the 30 x 40, don't know yet.

Fergus: Thanks. On the Willys collection I am hoping to add an Empire tractor to it someday. Empires were build using Jeep running gear right after WWll.

Zim: Thanks on the FC. I still remember first one I saw. It was new 1957 green FC150 with a stake body. I'm with you on the Power Wagons. Would love to have one.

Progess: Had the electrical contractor out to figure the job.

One step back: Bought a used 9k Rotary lift over the phone + email photos. Guy offers to deliver for $100 (120 miles) on way to another job. OK! After tech leaves I'm looking it over more closely and its a 7k, dummy me! Called owner and said he wiil make it right. I do have some time before I have a floor to put it on.

Big question, should I just go ahead and buy a new 10K ??

Cookies do go in the holes. They give a bigger footprint for the post. The holes are 4' x 20". I lightened photo to show it better.

The posts are set in place and trued up. You can visualize the 24' x 32' shop and the 24' x 16' porch on the one end of the building.
The roof pitch will be 6/12 on main building and the porch.

one of our members (BMXDAD) who i have gotten to know in person since he only lives 45minutes from me built a nice pole building not quite as big as yours that you might read some of his thread and get some tips or ideas. here's the link.

how thick are you planning on pouring the cement floor when you get to that point? a lot of members seem to have good success with 5 inch and some 4 inches and i know you probably have already talked to the cement guy or will soon. I framed up some sidewalks with 2 x 6 trex and poured them 5 inches about 4 years ago and still not a crack. nothing nicer than a smooth floor in your new shop.

Drivesit: We have 30 acres. 6 acres are lawn, 10 acres are hay and 14 acres are woods.

The floor is going to be 5" of 4000 psi concrete with 6" in the lift area.

The porch also gets 5".

Clipped: thanks for the 411 on the size of your farm. my uncle used to own a farm 40+ years ago and he never stopped moving except to eat.

Todays delivery. Wall insulation, sleeve for porch posts, beams for porch and sheet metal. As of lunch time door headers and bracing are up. One man crew today.
