Hey everybody, I'm new to the forum..have been lurking around as a guest for a while and finally became a member. Yes I am a grave digger by occupation and yes I live in a historic cemetery with a nice big garage that I have full access to. I'm also the company's mechanic. Anyways..i found this old champion pneumatic machinery company air compressor hiding under a bunch of **** and 10 years of dust. Its a model # OE416F...serial # 56674. I found pressure test certifications from the 70s for this thing..anyways I got her to run but blew a fuse in our antiquated electrical system...got that fixed and now I'm going to tear this thing apart and clean everything up and possibly repaint it...im scared to tear the motor apart as I'm not sure what the torque specs are for piston rods and what not..but..thats why I'm here...if I'm going to restore this old beauty I'd like to go all the way..tear the motor down clean it all up and put all new gaskets and bearings in the crankshaft..im going to attempt to post some pictures but I'm not quite sure how....
PLEASE HELP ME RESTORE THIS OLD BEAUTY!!!

By the way...the tank is in great shape..only a little bit of rust on the bottom...it did have a 1/4" bleeder coming off the bottom so that leads me to believe at one point in time this thing was well taken care of

Don't worry. You don't need a torque wrench. I'll help you through it. PM me & send some pics if you can.

I bought a champion that had been originally installed in a school in 1974. I think it's about 5hp 80 gallon tank.

A guy bought it at auction and didn't realize it was three phase, so he put it in the corner for a few years until he sold it to me.

I changed the oil, wired it up and it's been running fine for the past two years without a single hiccup. Great compressor and pretty quiet too.

I'm still trying to figure out how to post pics..ill tell u what I can tear just about anything completely apart and put it back together right but when it comes to computers....im lost haha...i did get some info on this beast. Called the champion office and gave them the numbers..they said they think its from the 50s or early 60s..i will keep everybody posted on the progress...the tank and motor are being degreased..tank is actually done I used my buddys power washer with the propane heater..im degreasing the motor by hand with a lil scrub brush...debating if I want to repaint it all original and hand paint the cpmc logo or do it all in a custom color then hand paint the logo..hmm

Pics the easy way. Use cell phone to take pic then instead of sending to another phone number, just change to your own email address. That way download to computer is easy after you open your own email. Start a post and then click on Manage Attachments that is down toward bottom of post. Browse to find that picture file on your computer, then click on Upload. Done.

GD if you want to see how little the Champion R-series pumps have changed over the decades, here's one of mine from 2011 or so. A few little differences, but easily recognizable as the same breed:

Got your pics today, thanks. Too small on my phone to tell much but I can see them well here. Thanks Zrexxer. You will need to disassemble and clean out the after-cooler chamber. They get very dirty in use. Let me submit your model & serial to the factory & see what's available. I think you should replace the check valve and the safety valve.

Should I pull the pistons and crank? Or is that too much? I've never restored a compressor before..but I do understand the mechanics..its not like if I took it apart I couldn't put it back together, unless I couldn't get new parts or something

I saved an old RE-10-9A from going to the dump! Looks the same as GD's.Took weeks to find new valves.Bought two Z-101 valve kits from compressorpartsstore .I only needed the two smaller valves in the kit, sent larger ones back.
The valves are thinner.Came with a spacer and copper crush ring.
Under the old valves looks like a copper spacer and copper crush ring that's on top of valve.Should I leave the spacer in,put valve in,then spacer with copper crush on top?
Hope picture works.

I'm thinking ,crush ring on top of valve, spacer under valve.
I sent GD a message hoping he shows up.
