another thing that's not right compared to the original picture is the holes in the front top and bottom,i'm thinking someone pulled the lock and ran some sort of bar down the front to block the doors.i haven't seen a single SO box that had a bar down the front.those are gonna get filled with weld tomorrow.

tomorrow i'm gonna go pick up some 3/4 box for making the racks for the bottle, handle and misc stuff.still no luck on the slide, might have to make one at this point, gonna call snap on tomorrow and see,if it's a no go,then i'm gonna have one copied.

I'm sure I'd never pay money for one, once you get them apart, you'd be hard pressed to tell it from any other tool box.

I've got to disagree with you here. I've taken apart and restored a lot of toolboxes, and there are most definitely differences in construction across brands.

Before you started messing with it.... That box woulda been worth $1000 trade in on a Snap on truck!

if that's true,then great,then i would have a thousand in tools from snap on,that i don't need.if i showed you what i owned for tools,you would need a box of tissues to get you through.let's just say i own a few things,what i didn't have is a old school,cool,usable box/welding cart.heres the list

25 for the box
18 for the 1'' box
20 bucks from my buddy to blast it
free primer
free paint
free clear
2 days of time i would just be killing on GJ
so right now i'm into the whole thing for 63 bucks, minus the drawer slide if i can find one,if not, then that's free to,because i will make one.

and in the end i will have a completely restored, old school SO box/ custom welding cart, that is usable in my day to day shop time.aint gonna get that on the snappy truck for 63 bucks.

so i'm thinking it's gonna go like this.the top bracket will hook to the top of the box and then i will use the 1'' box to hang down and be welded to the bottom tray.i'm going to space the one inch box out off the side of the cabinet by 1'',wich will allow me to use rubber bushings between the frame and the side of the cabinet.thus,no holes in the SO box.

here you can see what i mean by hooking on,i might also make some sort of legs that run under the bottom of the side of the toolbox that i can put some sort of bolts in,just to "clamp" the bracket to the box.not worried about it coming unhooked, just side to side if it gets bumped

starting to get the idea? then on each side of the welders will be holders for the cables and such,i'm thinking i'm going to copy a design i saw on a few.they kinda looked like a taco shell that the cable sat in,i really like this.

other things it will have is a 110v 6 plug along with a 220 plug for my 180 welder.this way i can have my 110 snappy plugged in and still have 5 available for 2 grinders and a corded drill, drop light and a magnamometer.oh yeah,it will also have a fire exstinquiser and cup holder.

so the snap on guy never got back to me,shocking i know. so today i called customer service and got it all straightened out.turns out that the slide for this box is no longer offered, but they do have the heavy duty version, same size just for heavy duty use.the number on my slide is 8-453,the replacement for it is a 8-280-1.the guy was very helpfull and i was happy to hear that they would send one out today and should be here by monday.free slide and free ship.
i will have to make a new runner and weld it in,but that will be super easy and i can use one of the slides i have to check for clearences.if all goes well,i should be able to paint this thing by mid week.

new slide went in last night, had to do a little clean up on where the old spot welds were, but went pretty easy.i pulled measurements off the right side and copied on the left.couldn't spot weld like factory, but i drilled holes in the new runner and plug welded it in all 6 spots.new slide works great and after paint, everything will get lubed up.you would never tell it didn't come this way,all the reveals are perfect.very happy that i'm finally onto paint.

.i haven't seen a single SO box that had a bar down the front.those are gonna get filled with weld tomorrow.

Mine has a bar down the front to lock the box. The bar pulls down and locks under the last drawer. The holes in the bottom panel are used to hold the panel.

thanks for the pic,i'm thinking on mine, someone made the holes and used some sort of make shift piece of flat stock to block the drawers.i'm not concerned with the locking part,i will source the lock and put it in,then the small holes will get burned shut before paint.

Snap-on really had something going with those old style logos, would be cool if those sold that old logo again so that you can choose what style logo you want on your toolbox.

so after a few weeks of chaos, work, workin on my house and a week in disney,i FINALLY got somethin done on this box today.today it got 3 coats of the blue, and i decided to respray the emblem, hit it with the blue, then sanded the face and shot it with the clear.think it will look nice against the silver drawer front.

inside of the drawers are gonna get shot black, all the drawers will have rubber sheet in the bottom of them,as well as the top of the cabinet.

a fresh new snappy! finally got it together enough to use.still have to get a lock, and today a buddy brought me a roll of gray rubber sheet.as you can see i didn't bother painting the top of the box because there will be rubber there, along with the drawer bottom's.only the drawer fronts got shot silver and the insides of the drawers just got shot black.the bottle rack is hung on the side, and at some point i will fab the handle/bracket that will hold the plugs for 110v. oh and i'm also gonna make the taco holders for the cables. all said and done,i have about 85 bucks in this thing.

so i got a little more done since i posted,i pulled the drawers this morning and finally put two coats of clear on the box,and drawer fronts.my buddy who gave me the paint, also gave me the clear.it's a very high build clear.one coat of this stuff is like 3 coats of normal clear,so the finish came out pretty slick.then another buddy had a roll of some sort of no slip rubber sheet he had gotten in a storage auction.he gave me a roll of it and i decided to make a piece for the top of the box for the welders to sit on,along with a piece for the bottom of each drawer and a piece for the bottom compartment where my shield will be stored.the only thing left, paint wise,is that i'm going to just rattle can the insides of the drawers black and the outsides where the slides are.

some point next week i will make the handle, cord holders and the holder for the outlets.those will get rattle canned black as well and it will mount like the bottle holder, where it's hung on the top lip and a bracket on the bottom that clamps to the bottom of the box.

so today i got a few more things out of the way,i finished up the handle, same story as the bottle holder.it hangs on the top edge of the box, except for the handle is clamped to the bottom of the box undernieth.i made two legs that stick out and then welded a nut to them, then i ran an elevator bolt through to use as the clamping surface.

after that i started mocking up for the plugs for the 110 welder, with 3 open spots for grinders and cords, the box on the left will get the plug for the 220 welder.that box will have the feed coming in from the panel and then i will use half of that to feed the 4 gang.i also added an up right that the taco holder will be welded to for holding the the snappy welder liner and gun.
