I found this old Walden Worcester wrench in my shed.
Sorry for poor pic quality  - (I'm doing my best :headscrat )
It says 3620 on left and sizes are 5/8 and 15/16
Does anyone know what is used on?
(I'm thinking early Ford)

AA says the 3620 was made for the Model T Ford, spark plug and head bolt.

Thanks four.cycle

I wonder how much that $0.80 would be in today's money?
Or much a mechanic earned per hr/day/week in 1922?

It's hard to believe we don't have a thread dedicated to all things Walden-Worcester. There are several threads on various tools or sets as they get found etc, but no big monster thread like the other mfgrs.

Some of the extra pieces inside that Mossberg No. 82 Socket Wrench Set attache case I just picked up (thread linked here), turned out to be early Walden-Worcester.

- The brace type short shank speed wrench has a non-detachable welded-on 3/4” socket – and a wooden rotting grip! It has no model number, and the short brace type speeders in the 1923 Walden catalog – the only catalog I have from the non-detachable era – don’t have rotating grips like this one. So I am not sure what it is yet. The patent date that is stamped in it with the branding (OCT 22, 1918) corresponds to the Bellows patent 1,626,671 for “an improved means for enabling metal rods to be attached to sockets for the economical and efficient manufacture of wrenches.” Plain steel and suffering for it.

- The long Tee wrenches (1614, 1616) are not marked Walden, and the long Tee wrenches in the 1923 Walden catalog are all 27XX series, but they sure look Walden to me. Nickel-plated.

- I'm almost certain that the triple-socket wrench is a Tomahawk 1620, although a perhaps slightly later model when they were moving toward forged wrenches. The one end is welded on, as you would expect to find in the non-detachable era, the other end is forged, unlike the wrench in the 1923 catalog, with both ends welded-on. Plain steel.

I meant a "Show your..." thread analogous to the "Show your..." threads that Snappy, Plomb, BH, NB, Williams etc all have, Woody, but yes, I could've tacked these extra pieces onto the end of your Wiki/AA/Google History/Bio summary thread (I believe you like to call them "story" threads) on Walden. I have done that before for other mfgrs without a main "Show your..." thread, typically they are more obscure mfgrs, though. I'm just saying it's weird Walden doesn't have one of those threads. It has a bunch of threads, but they are more specific to a particular set or tool. But yes, we could use your history summary thread for that.

As I collect Walden and Stevens Walden from the beginning to the end I also would like to see a thread. However, since many Walden tools are in the Stevens Walden socket sets it would seem that the thread would be Walden and Stevens Walden. I may have close to 500 items with those names on them.

These 1/4” drive sets may be marked Stevens Walden on the exterior but the tools inside are mostly marked Walden Worcester. I recently picked up this SW 1/4” drive ratchet adapter.

Here are a few of my old Walden socket sets. Starting with the first picture they are sets No's 12, 25 and 27. These sets are complete, and No.25 has some extras.

Ford brake and reverse band adjustment wrenches are littered all over this forum, from Mossberg, Bog, Hinsdale, even Packer Auto ("Ray"), and of course Walden. But I think this is the first Walden 4564 I have seen with the warning on the flip side about not using it as a ratchet for anything else.

I am sure no one would ever use it in an unintended way:lol_hitti

Haha. No way, said the man who just used a screwdriver to pop a rivet! (Before the purists get the tar, feathers and pitchforks out I am salvaging decals and data plates off a few machines, the back end of this particular rivet was not exposed for a pin punch, and a fatter cutting chisel or hack saw blade would've marred the plate.)

Here is a 3/8 set, some sockets marked walden, some have the Oval with SW in it. The extension is walden worchester, Box stamped stevens walden. Alot of walden stuff seems like that.20190902_204105.jpg

Thanks don. Walden made some nice looking stuff, even if they did mark it oddly!

Hi All

Got this set, Walden Worcester?, 6 sockets and an "ell".
I dont know if the wooden box is original or home made, but it looks alright and fits well.

Three of the sockets are marked Walden Worcester and size, the 7/8'', the 5/8'' and the 9/16''.
The "ell" and the other three sockets are simply marked "MADE IN U.S.A".
Also, the two smallest are marked upside down compared to their four bigger brothers.

Thoughts anyone?

Thoughts anyone?
That looks like an economy line set that Walden sold in the mid- to late-1920's as Set No. 300 and variations of that number. It came in a carton and later, a leather snap-case. See Pics 1 & 2 below.

I just went through two 1920's catalogs and a hundred pages of 1920's ads and I could not find it listed in any wooden box, like the one you found it in, or any other. (Walden's top of the line sets came in wooden boxes, but they were hinged with metal badges, and they came with a ratchet, a universal joint, two plus, and an extension. I have the No. 8 and No. 16, linked here.) I suspect you may be right about the wooden box being homemade.

As for the smaller sockets being marked upside down, I think that is a function of this set being economy line, and the factory not lavishing too much attention and QC on them. As for those same sockets not being branded, again similarly, I think roll-stamping sockets that small was just not something they were going to take the time to do for these particular sets.

Frankly, I think the markings and especially the homemade box give the set more character, panache, authenticity, and value.

It's an awesome little set and a terrific find, Targa!

Thank you for the reply, appreciate it!

I found it at a store selling old military surplus equipment. This, together with the flat, grey paint, makes me believe this might have been part of an army toolbox.

Thank you!

Sorry, guess I was not clear enough, with the paint I was referring to the box.

Sockets and ell are plated.

This 01824 Swivel socket wrench, 9/16 12pt x 3/4" square drive, is one of many Walden Worcester items that have appeared from the bins of rusty gold I obtained this past weekend. More to follow in the next week or two (I'm sure Thanksgiving will stunt the posting activity by a few days at least).

I figured this is as good as any place to post my question.

I recently got sent a bunch of old Walden Worcester sockets. Tried a bit of research on Alloy Artifacts and didn't come up with anything definitive. Does anyone know what approximate time frame Walden Worchester was made? I am guess late 40s but i know there are a lot more knowledgeable people than me.
