L. S. Starrett is still present in Athol, Ma and still makes precision tools in USA. Not sure what they make in Athol.
I drove through their compound in 2017 on a fine summer day, on the old Mohawk Trail, the compound is old and worn but well alive. An employment office on the interior drive/alley had a cheap looking Home Depot sign out on the door, "help wanted". Good for them. Next time I will walk in and inquire if a company museum is on site.
The towns along the Mohawk Trail in interior Massachusetts were significant homes for precision manufacturing in late 1800s. Many have remaining factory buildings, now empty or flea markets and the like.
I use vintage Starrett inside and outside pincer gages to measure things like bicycle bottom brackets and wheel hub widths.
I love wear and action marks on a tool that do not wreck it. Initials make them far less attractive to me.
