Put it on ice for when they are really hard to get hold of and it becomes economically viable to restore it, I watched a few "Dutchmann" videos recently and he was saying it's really hard to find donors in South Africa now.

Can we have a toolcart tour of the black cart with the stickers and maybe meet some of the techs in your future YouTube content, always interesting to know what tools specialist have in their toolkits?

Kudos for the honest appraisal with the Targa guy, a lot of shops would have just took his money👍

Good advice just like @danski0224 mentioned.

That’s a great idea! Love to do some tool box tours of the guys! We will get that coming!

I always think the Targa looks good in dark metallic colours with that brushed roll hoop, I personally would do the bumper over-riders/door handles and mirrors in the same finish 👍
The dark colors work well on the smaller cars as it accentuates the body likes NO?

Great ideas!

Thanks homie!

I have always wondered what a Porsche Baja Bug would look like and how it would cause the purists to have heart attacks! A friend of mine bought a completely rusted out early 911 that ran perfectly back in the 90’s and we drank many a beer contemplating doing a Baja 911 until some guy offered him big bucks for the drivetrain! Today that car would probably get restored, back then it got scrapped!

@olsenmotorsports have you ever been tempted to do something rally inspired? A mild elephant racing lift kit and some pod lights perhaps? That body could take some rock chips and dust and not come out too much worse for the wear and tear.

Buddy of mine does them and does them really well on the 997 platform. If we were going to do one this would for sure be the chassis to do it with!

Look up Leh King Safari's, and also Kelly Moss Safari.

Leh's stuff is more for the normal working man's budget, Kelly Moss stuff is in their own stratosphere (but worth it). Both are great examples!

Couple months ago we started on a little 78 restomod for a local guy. Got him a donor car and got after it.

IMG_9227.jpeg

Pretty good little car not in terrible shape, just had this center hood fuel filler neck, that was lets say made by a blind person.

IMG_4325.jpeg

Some people, I get it, trying to push the envelope and make things but if it is beyond your skill set it is one of those things best farmed out.

IMG_1353.jpeg

We re used their top flange and cleaned it up and re made everything else.

IMG_4329.jpeg

Then it was on to making another flange for the hood - previously builder just cut a hole and sent i…. This was done on the Hammer and then planished out…

IMG_5393.jpeg

Test fitted to the hood

IMG_5420.jpeg

And finally welded and ready for planishing!

Some more finishing touches to come

Continuing on with the targa fuel filler neck

IMG_5547.jpeg

Ah the basics of metal shaping… TIme to make a bowl!!!!!!

IMG_5559.jpeg

Getting after it on the hammer and the planisher to establish the shape.. This will mate with the underside of the hood and catch any fuel

IMG_5560.jpeg

Planishing - boring, loud, thankful when that thing shuts off lol

IMG_5559.jpeg

Here the basics shape is established and Alex can planish the rest

IMG_5560.jpeg

Final fit and welded in!

olsen-5.jpeg

Here it is coming back from Body. This one has a super rich ivory color to it. Once again custom color didn’t start with anything but “I want off white”

Going to call this the white car

olsen-12.jpeg

Thanks for following along!

I like the colors in your rendering and the modern wheels.
Are the wheels meant to be directional?
Asking because if so, they look like they would go on the other side of the car.

I dont think they are meant to be directional - I mean I guess you could make them that way and have a left and a right side setup, but costs would of course go up. Great idea and that would for sure be legendary OCD~

Are these widened? Who do you use for custom Fuchs?

Yes the fenders are widened 6” in the rear and 4” in the front - That process is shown in the earlier pages on this thread -

Been a long time since I misdiagnosed something….. Still scratching my head and I am sure you guys all have the answer! Help lol!

Backstory 911 SC comes in, no A/C. Blowers are not working - it has two blowers, one on the evaporator and one on the condenser. All fed by a relay that gets its power from a fuse in the fuse box. Fuse was blown. Ok no biggie right? Slap a fuse and check the wave form on the fuse to make sure there isn’t an issue and send it packing.

No issues here - both fans running and a nice ripple at 3.5amps on a 10 amp fuse. Good to go. Chalk it up to a bad fuse etc - there is the issue of the fuse looked like it had gotten hot - lets have a visual inspection.

Sure enough the green and crustiest - Put a fuse box in it - re do those wires back a foot and retest. No issues and good to go.

Here is a video of the diagnosis and the waveform. Happy customer and problem solved!

NOTTTTTT…… Car comes back a few days later - WTF

Few days later service comes back hey yo that silver car with no ac is back - check it out please WTF???

Same thing - melted fuse. Unreal. Repeat all the tests no issue - fans work perfect, nice ripple on the waveform - Check the fuse block it is ok (yes of course we mounted it with ceramic isolator paste)

Ok lets voltage drop all the grounds - something is wonky - voltage drop on grounds are perfect - even stud/ring drops show perfect. Voltage drop on all the connectors also pass with flying colors - makes no sense.

No data shows that we need any parts, and we have a strict policy against the parts cannon without data to verify its bad - so lets just eliminate that circuit on the fuse box and run dedicated fused power to the relays and recommend a harness to the customer.

No idea what I did wrong here to mis diagnose this one but I got it wrong and in a big way lol.

here is the final synopsis

I humbly consider myself and my team in the top echelon at our craft and diagnostic ability but sometimes you just freaking get it wrong. Wasted an hour on a diag that was bad.

What should I have done differently?

Looks like you covered all the basics Tim except testing VD across the fuse block.

You are correct - amateur hour!
Don’t feel bad bud. After playing Tetris with a plc yesterday to identify an output to locate a blown fuse..
IMG_3262.png
I confirmed there was no faults, popped another fuse in, cycled it a few times and bailed.

10 minutes after leaving I get a call, it ain’t working again. Head back, test everything fifty times, plunk a new fuse in again and perform every type of maneuver possible to overload the component and could not get the new fuse to blow (or more technically speaking, create an overload condition) 😉

All I could tell them in highly technical language was….whelp, seems the other new fuse was a pos…hahaha

Hilarious!

Funny thing that was part of my diag lol. I went to parts and asked where they got the fuses from lol. They were acting like Amazon fuses 🤣

Went in yesterday to work to have some me time and clear my head. Sometimes I need that so I dont become dangerous lol,.

IMG_6434.jpeg

I finished up the tool grid in the metric socket drawer - every post now has a label - I think that took longer than actually laying everything out! I have that one space in the center for expansion but if I need more room I will have to start taking the lay down sets out and putting them in different drawers.

I am done for the most part buying any kind of sockets or wrenches.

IMG_6430.jpeg

Speaking of wrenches I also got the metric wrench drawer all labeled out as well!

IMG_6449.jpeg

It is super hot in the CHI almost 90 every day so I took the opportunity to put the targa outside to bake for a few hours. Get some heat into the Suntek PPF and let it heal a tad.

Holy sh##t this car looks amazing in the sun!

Have a great weekend!

Picking back up on the Targa - Time to get the interior together - Alex and I went in for some OT today to get a head start on the week. Client is coming Friday to see the vehicle for the first time - like to have it mostly assembled for him by then.

IMG_6467.jpeg

Not much to see here - just some landau top and trim adhesive in a gun and try not to make a mess. This stuff is crazy good. Cover the carpet as well as the car with the glue and let it dry up - ten minutes is good - then once it touches the other surface it tacks back up and is stuck stuck. Gotta love chemistry

IMG_6462.jpeg

While it was all tacking up we took the time to cover our metal pieces for belts/seats etc so that they dont get all nasty - as well as tape out our lines for overlap

IMG_6468.jpeg

Rear is starting to come together - humps first then sides - It is German silver knit so it has a good amount of pliability and stretch. As long as the padding is done nicely it lays out great. Patience is key though!

IMG_6463.jpeg

While that was all being done we started on the center dash section - this is all glued in as well - patience and some strategic clamps - wish I could figure out a better way to do this but the clamping method seems to be ok - just looks ghetto as all hell lol

IMG_6464.jpeg

Got the trim in around the climate controls as well

Excited to see the final details on this one come together! This is the part I love watching unfold. Just craftsman doing their thing

Made some good progress today on the targa. IMG_7584.jpeg

No matter how **** you are and clean interior work is just messy. There’s glue, fuzz, trimmings, just threads of stuff everywhere. Makes it look like we work in a pig sty lol. Sorry about that! IMG_6485.jpeg
IMG_6482.jpeg

Dash is in, buttoned down and trimmed out. Only thing left is locate the push button start and do stereo there.

IMG_6473.jpegIMG_7463.jpeg

Rear carpet is in, side panels in, just about ready for rear seats so we can locate rear deck stripes.
IMG_7509.jpeg
Seats also are done! Really happy with the white and blue piping. White is tough to make monotone look right, I think the guys did a great job.

IMG_7528.jpeg

Passenger seat striped lines up perfectly with the stripe on the car as planned!

Notice the little touches like the left winsdshiled squirter is yellow and the right is blue 🤔🤔

Coming together quickly now!

Targa is looking amazing! I was at the National Naval Aviation Museum here in Pensacola last week preparing for my upcoming retirement ceremony. They have a Corvette C8 roped off just adjacent to Cabot Flight Deck on display from a local Chevrolet dealer and it has a similar paint scheme, but from what I can tell, it is just a factory blue available with the dual-gold stripes, not nearly the detail you have put into the Targa beauty.

Back in the day when I knew a lot of the Blue Angel team members (they are all the young guys by design and now I am old at 51), one of my friends who was on the team told me that when the landed on a Thursday for an airshow a local Chevrolet dealer had 6 brand new blue Corvettes waiting for them, with their side number painted on the side in yellow, and the dealership owner just handed them the keys and said "have fun this weekend." If you are going to be King, might as well be King Kong!
