So…. While I don’t turn wrenches for a living I do spend a lot of time in the shop on my cars (currently 13 of them) and side jobs for friends. I have two pf720b that I picked up around 2000. Based off of these ratchets I can’t say that I have been a fan of snap on. They are the backups if I can’t find my good ratchet or if I have a buddy over wrenching with me. The ratchets are sloppy and seem to tear up easily. Since I don’t own or work at a shop the snapon man doesn’t stop by so I have to have my mechanic buddy get rebuilds. My buddy says the new snapons are lot better than these ratchets. So after stripping out a new rebuild the SAME day I got it back I decided it is time to get rid of them. I moved so now I can’t my buddy get them swapped out. Yesterday SnapOn had an event at San Antonio Raceway. I figured I could get my ratchets swapped out.

Here is where the fun starts. So there are about 10 trucks backed up to the fence with those temporary tent/cabanas. They were grilling out and there was a ton of people hanging out. So I picked the truck over by the staging lane that had a bunch of Snapon swag for sale. They can’t help me and tell me to go over to the fence where all the trucks are. So I walk over I try to find a dealer. I find a guy with a real nice Snap on shirt and ask him. He says something about a lady is changing in the truck and to wait 15 minutes and then he sees another dealer points me to him. So I walk over to him as he is coming out the truck and start to talk to him. He tells me his computer isn’t on and he can’t help me. Tells me to go talk to Dennis Taylor (IIRC). So I walk down to the truck with his name on it and he is sitting right next his truck. I tell him my story and he tells me he can’t help me because he isn’t working. He tells me to go a couple trucks down and talk to this other dealer. At this point he starts saying how this is going to be funny because this guy he sending me to is a new guy. I tell the guy I am not trying to be part of a joke and I am not going over there give him a laugh. At this point I give up and I head back to my truck to watch the races.

After a couple hours me and my friends head back over to the “new” guy. I end up talking to a lady that isn’t in her truck and the “new” guy that works for corporate or for a corporate account. They confirm my version of ratchets isn’t very good and talk they about they can probably rebuild them if they can get parts. The last ratchet was hard to rebuild because the guy couldn’t get parts. The lady says she would rebuild it if her truck was there and the guy tells me if I come down to his place of business he’ll help me. They say this is a PR event and they aren’t working which is why none of the trucks will help me. Then they say I need to look up the local dealer for my area call them. At this point I am pretty pissed off. There are more than 10 snap dealers and none of them will work with me.

I go back to my truck and get ready to leave. There is one last truck that is next to the snapon 18 wheeler displays. I go over ask the guy (Mike Glascock) if he is working. He says so I tell him my story and how none of the other dealers will help me. He grabs an f80 and tells me how much better it is then my ratchets. I ask him what I need to do get them swapped. He tells me my two snapon ratchets and $10.75 will get me the f80. What a deal!! I can see why you guys love snapon :(

Just ship them to Snap On direct. With a note of the tool cat. #. Use the new tool number ie. F80 not F830 or F936 example. You will get back a new ratchet as they don't repair the old ones. Thats what I do, great service. Ship to:

I don't understand your complaint? So you went to a race were a bunch of snap on guys were there just to watch and grill out, not work, but brought their trucks for publicity and you got made because they wouldn't work on their day off? Then you are upset because one of the guys offers you a brand new ratchet for your 2 used ones and 10 bucks?

They have business hours also. Just send them in and they will take care of you. No reason to complain. It was a race, not a snap on business.

Question, what good is the publicity if you tell a customer to go away? Seems entirely counter productive to me. If they didnt want the attention they should of went as normal people instead of dressing down as SO franchise holders and taking their retail outlet with them.

They brought their trucks for publicity, then they are working. I'm sure they could of brought their family pickup and grilled out and no one would bother them.

Kinda reminds me of hot women in really short pants and skimpy t-tops out in public that get annoyed when men look at them.

You`d think they`d have stepped up to help from a PR standpoint, that`s why they were there, duh. Do you think that if a racer broke a tool, and needed it to fix something so he could race that they would`ve helped him? I went to the tour they did for the Glowmad last year, about 12 trucks there, and at least 8 were selling stuff.

I did pay the 11 bucks to do the deal. What good is two useless ratchets? I guess I should have called snap on instead of going to the event.

too late :(

hahaha you got hosed, he charged you $10 !!!!!! It should have been free. He is going to sell those on his truck.
The guy looked up their value in his computer and said he would have send them in as defective. I guess their were only worth 35 dollars. The new f80 is worth 80.75. So I had to pay 10.75, the guy didn't have a quarter so I had to pay 11. I got hosed when I got the first ratchets. 11 bucks for a ratchet that isn't junk isn't too bad though it wasn't worth all the hassle to get it.

I expect to be able to swap out a snap on ratchet a snap on event, yes. It is the real reason I drove the hour to the event. I understand those guys have hours. But you are acting like I called them at 2am to drive to my house to swap a ratchet. Though at the snapon price 2am service should be included. I think above and beyond service should be included in the price they charge. The high cost of snapon has to be their for a reason. When you top dollar it is for great service.

As for the two ratchets and 11 bucks for a new ratchet, it seem a bit ridiculous. Lifetime warranty? The ratchets were junk and everyone in the know agreed, even the snap dealers.

They did ask what I needed and when the found out I just need ratchets swapped I felt like they just didn't want to deal with me because they wouldn't make any money. I am sure if I said I wanted to spend 10k on tools they would turn their computer on. I could be wrong though.

So let me get this straight...... The guy owns the truck and the guy owns the tools, so some of the tools on here seem to think that he should hop to it because they want some tools when he is enjoying a Snap On sponsored event???? What if your local hardware store owner was in his store after business hours watching a race and wouldn't sell you something.....would you be pissed at him too??? Come on guys nobody is ever as important as they think they are. :)

I would have been PISSED... Glad you handled the situation better than me. I do love the Dual 80 series, and never knew that if you sent SO a broken 936 or older ratchet they would send back a new model...

IF, they were out there selling swag, I can imagine they would sell tools too, IF they were doing that then they ought to be able to take care of a previous customer. They are representing SO in the end...

Lol well said. I have a dealer back home I have spent 15-20k with that I can call him even on Sunday in order to buy a tool to finish a job. Good luck having a new customer that is able to do that.

If he had the door open and the lights on yes i would expect he'd be open for doing some business.

Given that the OP had to explain the situation each time it sounds like exactly as he stated, they didnt want to bother with a lowly exchange. If he was there to buy a box they probably all would of snapped to attention. From a PR standpoint thats piss poor service in my book.

This illustrates my point perfectly. Just because somebody expects someone to do something doesn't mean that they are required to do it. If you truly believe that you are that important, then you are going to be sorely disappointed or walk around pissed off constantly. :)

When you Snap-on dealer turns in your ratchets he will get for no cost 2 new F80's. If you have the dealers name I would call Snap On and tell them what happened. In the future cut out the middle man and send in the tools direct to Snap On or call them for a few items and have them pay the postage.

Its a good thing few share your opinion otherwise nobody would do anything. Try that attitude when you go to work.

Boss: Can you do this for me?
You: Maybe, maybe not, i'm not required to do anything.

please.

I agree 100%.

I'm a big Snap-On fan but if that would've happened to me, I would be looking at other options before buying from Snap-On in the future.

Those dealers were there representing Snap-On and should've acted accordingly.

yes, for replacements they get reimbursed in full the cost of the most recent replacement so assuming that dealer doesnt try to resell them he'll get 2x the dealer cost of an F80 and pocket the $11.

On anything that cant be repaired or replaced it gets upgraded. Thats why people were saying should of just sent them in. You'd have two F80s. :(

I could not find the part # omn the SO website and even if its an older model they will send you to the newest replacement

Try typing F936 into snapon.com search It will pull up the F80

I say call SO and explain your problem they are good people and Im sure this will be resolved somehow.

Yes Indeed. That guy cheated you and he is going to send those two ratchets in and get two new f80's to sell on his truck. He sees you coming. I read this earlier and was thinking the same, you need to call Snap-on and tell them what this dealer did. Dealers like that give the good ones a bad name.

Possibly. Generally dealers are supposed to rebuild ratchets rather than warranty them for new ones. Not sure whether the dealer hosed you or not. If he plans to rebuild them and then sell them he treated you fairly. Either way you screwed yourself out of an additional new ratchet and $11.

If you picked up a couple of F720s back in 2000 they were probably about worn out then. They were probably 20 years old when you got them. When in good shape they are quite good ratchets. The Snap-On guy hosed you by giving you 1 ratchet for 2 and chargng you 10 dollars.

Personally I would not go to a race sponsered by snap on just to warranty 2 ratchets. If your local dealer won't do it for you that is one thing. That's kind of like going to a lowe's sponsered race and trying to warranty a leaky bathroom faucet in my opinion. Just because there are people there representing lowes/snap on/whoever doesn't mean they are there doing their day job. But that's just my opinion and obviously others disagree. I do think that one of the dealers could have stepped up a little and done something, either fix it or give you the snap on website to return the ratchet to.

I don't work at a shop everyday either. So if I need something warrantied I just email snap on and they will take care of the problem. This is your best bet from now on.

When did the PF720b come out? I got them on the job 2000 and they brand new, well at least never used. I think the sloppy I was talking about was from the long throw needed to get a click not wore out.

here is a picture of them. Not sure way one changed color, they both sat in the same box.

The F720 is rebuildable with an RKRAF730 repair kit. You traded two old ratchets and $10 for a new one.

Hi :)

Could you tell me a bit about the 4th one in that picture (the chunky handled one). Who makes it and where you got it from please?

I have an identical one to that but it's branded "Halfords Advanced/Professional" (can't remember which) in the UK.

What do you think of it?

Cheers :)

I agree that if your old ratchets were rebuildable, you got a fine deal. Not a super great one, but a fair one at least. However, I will say that most SO dealers I've personally met are not super helpful. The guys on this site are pretty darn helpful, and the company customer service is the best I've seen. It just seems like some of the dealers get this rock star mentality for some reason. When paying inflated prices for tools, (I buy both Snap-on and Cornwell on a regular basis, so I'm doing it too) you should get inflated customer service.

I bought it when I was on the road and needed a ratchet. I was 20 bucks IIRC, fine tooth and I got it from http://www.northerntool.com/

I have only used it a couple times so I can't give it a real review. It has a real small head and doesn't need much angle to get a click. Here are some pictures of it taken apart.

http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96769

one guy says the guts look the same as a Matco 88. I'd like to know who really makes it.
