Orchard Supply Hardware closing

Lowes is closing all approximately 100 of their OSH stores. For those that don't know, OSH is a (mostly) California based hardware store chain. The more recent history of OSH is that it has been passed from owner to owner like a hot potato. Lowes is just the most recent owner. Lowes' new management has decided to close down the money losing OSH.

It appears the D-day for closing is the end of October. The store closing sale started on a Thursday. It appears that every Thursday, the discounts will increase. (Conveniently, October ends on a Wednesday.)

The discounts started at 10% to 30%. Then went to 10% to 40%. They are now 15% to 40%. The highest discount is on items that are sold in bins like bolts and pipe fittings.

Wandering the store, I didn't see anything that had the price raised before starting the sale. However, the 10% discount merely made their prices competitive with the Despot down the street. Also, in years past, OSH would have "no sales tax" sales which amounted to approximately 10% off.

I've been to four different OSH's (including their "oldest" location) since the sales started. They are busy but not mobbed. The paint departments consistently have had some empty shelves - I guess people are stocking up on their custom mixed colors.

I visited my local OSH and perused the merch as well. Like OP said, minimal discount on tools (all 10%) which was disappointing. I did see a dented tool chest and wanted to get a discount on it, but apparently the pricing is fixed because everything is now owned by a liquidation firm - so the employees couldn't give me a discount if they wanted to. That's what they told me, anyway . . .

I brought a couple cman sockets for warranty and they wouldn't do it. It's gonna be several weeks before there is anything close to what you'd call a deal.

I stopped by the San Carlos, CA. store 2 weeks ago and half the Craftsman tools are gone with only 10% off. You can get better deals if you buy at sears.com and go to the sears store to pick up your Craftsman tools.

What are the discounts like now? Are there any good deals now?

They went from 10%-30% off, to 10-40, and now to 15-40. I expect the discount to increase tomorrow, maybe to 20w50.

Edit: As of today, September 13th, the discount is now %15 to %50.

Is the official last day, Wednesday October 31, 2018? The store workers at the San Carlos, CA. store did not know the final closing date.

According to OSH's website, all 99 Orchard Supply Hardware stores will close by the end of the year.

Somewhere online I read that the clearance sale will last 70 days. From the day they started, 10/31 is the 70th day.

Update: I visited the Alum Rock and (edge of) downtown San Jose stores. It looks like they are getting restocked with some SKUs. The "summer barbecue area" of the Alum Rock store in particular is jammed full of boxes from their Tracy distribution center. Elsewhere, some isles are emptied of merchandise and roped off.

Tools still aren't significantly reduced. Fasteners (my target) are 50% off.

Absolute waste of time at this point. 95% of the SKU's are 15% off and the only category at 50% is fasteners. Their regular prices are way high to begin with so the discounts make them barely competitive with everyone else.

I might go back when everything is 50% off or more.

The only deal might be Benjamin Moore paints which are 20-30% off. (that assumes BM paint prices are the same everywhere.)

The store I went to had pretty full shelves and very few shoppers.

Went by the salinas location today. Sign says 15% - 50%. Here’s what I saw.

15%
Tools, ladders, fire extinguisher, fire alarms. Lawn, garden equipment

20%
Air filters, lumber, pavers, sandpaper

50%
Fasteners, drawer/cabinet fixtures, pipe,

The discounts are now up to 40% to 80%. (Last week was 30% to 70%, week before 20% or 25% to 60%.) It looks like last week's 30% discount finally really brought in the shoppers.

All display model tools have been removed. The particular location I went to has the remaining boxed tools moved to locking spray paint cabinets close to the front of the store. Also, the display model faucets and toilets are gone.

One item they have plenty of (as seen now in several locations) is Orchard branded shovels. Made in China though.

I went there yesterday. At 80% off, the plumbing is a great deal. Bought some galv. and PVC pipe, fittings, valves, etc.

The only other category that looked interesting was Benjamin Moore paints at 40% off but didn't need any.

Hand tools were mostly picked over/gone.

3 weeks ago bought a Traeger Grill/smoker for 20% off, got the last one.

I ended up buying a dewalt angle grinder for $70 and the walton 4 1/2 inch bullet tradesman vise for $110 which was a score in my opinion.

Drove by one yesterday and it just looked too depressing to go into. I was sitting at intersection and I could see that most of the shelves were empty, employees walking around slowly. My shop is fully stocked (I'm lucky), so I drove on and avoided the dismal setting.

PS> I guess it's too late to return a bag of plumbing parts that I've been meaning to get my money back on? I bummed they closed, they were another good option to the big box stores plus they sold my favorite caramel root beer (Brownie's).

I'm equally as bummed out about it as well , as I have one down the street from my house and had become quite antiquated with the folks that worked there and honestly wish they were closing their doors for good.

I picked up a couple of the Wilton Tradesman vises at 40%. I don't expect them to move fast because there are already a few on CL in my area. I think most stores only had one or 2 in stock so the supply should dry up soon

Not much left in my area; San Francisco peninsula. I did pick up some work pants at 40% off and some other miscellaneous things.

According to the cashiers at two different locations, the last day is Friday November 2nd. It is possible some locations might be open a bit longer.

(The downtown San Jose, aka San Carlos Street, location is already closed. Google apparently swooped in, bought the property, and gave them two weeks to get out. Remaining merchandise was moved to other locations.)

Discount is now 50%-80%.

Did anyone see any 3/4 copper pipe? I think their regular price is higher than Home Depot or lowes tho.

didn't see anything really good. given their stuff is about 25% higher than HD and you get 50% off.

I bought a couple things but didn't feel like i got a good deal... says 80% off selection of threaded rods, but when I check out it is 50% off. Pretty lame

Update on the last day: For multiple locations it is November 4th. For Sunnyvale (Saratoga-Sunnyvale Rd.) the last day is November 10th or so. That store has more merchandise than others - I think it is being brought in from other stores.

For those who live near a OSH being closed, the local OSH has large plastic totes for $5 each, or 3 for $10, if interested go soon for best choice, bought 3 today that are almost pristine, otherwise they are plastered with stickers as they were moved between stores and the Tracy distribution center, & better ones are free of cracks on the corners.

The store is getting quite barren, was told that one had 9 days left as of today (10/27/18).

Quite a few 90% off galvanized and PVC plumbing fittings at the Santa Rosa, CA store as of today. Some copper and brass.

Discount is now 70%-90% at the San Carlos, CA. store. Only 2 days left.

I guess each store is on a different schedule: Tuesday the discount was 60%-90% at Capitola, CA and their last day is Monday November 5th.

Thursday discount/closing update:

Alum Rock 70%-90%, last Nov 4th. Very empty store!
Cottle 70%-90%, last Nov 4th.
Blossom Hill 60%-90%, last Nov 11th.

Saturday update:

Milpitas signed for 80%-90% with an extra 50% on top of that, closed Nov 3rd.
Capital/Silver Creek 60%-90%, last Nov 11th.
Cottle 80%-90%.

Our store is only opened for 2 years, they have the drink fridge by the cashier so 2 years new,
wanted $900 each they have 2 doors and not the little one at safeway. I don't know how much it costed new, guessing $2000 or $2400 but was a bit too high for me to consider for a impulse buy.

Got to experience the closing process at the Capitola location:

Morning: Sign out front says 80% to 90% off.
Noon: PA announcement that the discounted price is halved yet again (i.e. 90% to 95% off.)
1PM: They brought out a stack of used totes and announced that whatever you can fit in a shopping cart or tote is $25. It took about 15 minutes for all major merchandise areas to get grabbed up.
4PM: Store is empty!

asked about the bolt bins they were not wanting sell them individually & wanted $1200 for each row.

The Capitola location was breaking theirs down individually. I got four (empty) cubes (three drawers with a lid per cube) at $30 a cube. Yes, expensive, but much better than some sort of home organizer trays.

The $25 thing is insane. Surprised no fight breaks out...
