Organizing drill bits

I would like to know how you guys have organized your drill bits!! I can't seem to come up with a practical idea. Thanks

Are you talking about storing multiple bits of the same size or an organizer for standard drill bits, spade bits, hole saws, etc?
Here is how I did mine. Built a cabinet that hangs next to the drill press. Works great to keep them cleaner and organized.

I have a mix of the sets in their own cases, a plastic plano type box, drill bit stand for 1/16 through 1/2 bits, and a couple zippered microphone bags with spade bits and masonry bits. Then I have my larger drill bits for running wire in one of the plastic boxes they come in (the kind that expand to fit various length bits)

Yup I use one of those for my (mics bits.)

Here is my setup.

Black and decker box is all wood bits
Black box is all masonry bits
red box is Matco warrantied Cobalt bits up to 1/2
gray box is all 3/8 bits (I have about 100)
wood box is 1/2 to 1" by 1/8"
transfer punces in front of wood box
and jug is full of 1/2+ mics bits

top houses my really expensive bits... (spent about $300 on whats there)
mics counter sinks, unibits, cutting bits, tools and guids below
hole saws in top drawr
tapered bits and carbide burs in middle
bottom is all engraving tools

It's not perfect but it's a good start.

Most of mine fit in one drawer of the toolbox. That's organized, in a way. Mostly I leave them in the organizers they come in.

Mine are currently taking up almost a full drawer of my toolbox. I plan to build a rolling cabinet for my drill press and will have drawers under it to house my bits. Drawers will be similar to what Bullfrog did, only they'll mostly be laying down in the drawers, but with custom organizers built in.

Excess bits are stored in a Huot drawer box, like the one previously shown.

Heh. There's a fairly obvious solution...

get a 2x4 or 2x6, sand the top smooth, paint it, then drill a series of holes 3/4 of the way through (so a little over an inch) with each bit in successive order of size, smallest to largest. Then stick the bits into the wood. Then, if you're really feeling fancy, put labels at each hole for the bit size.

That's what I use as well for the "common" bits I need most of the time. Plus, it's easy to see when one is not in it's place when the job is done.

You can find one of these nut & bolt cabinets at any garage sale for 50 cents to $1. I sharpened all my old bits with a Drill Doctor so whenever I need a fresh bit I just open the drawer with the proper size.

Thanks, I have 3 sets of "common" bits that I have on my bench in their original "broken" organizers. Ordered up some of these.

That's what I use as well for the "common" bits I need most of the time. Plus, it's easy to see when one is not in it's place when the job is done.

Here is a drawer in one of the Lista cabinets at work that we keep the new bits in. The organizers were kinda spendy, but when you are on the clock, and you use lots of bits, this gives you a good idea of your inventory at a quick glance.

We also have a couple of the metal index's (sp?) for the user sets.
